Guild Wars 2 and PS4
They need to optimize the PC version first. Why pull a Diablo III :p
If they did bring GW2 over to consoles though, I would hope they would also bring controller support over as well. Once again, why pull a Diablo III…
But in any case, you need to pay for an internet connection, as you probably also need to pay for electricity to power the console too. You “hardly” play GW2 for free :p
With that in mind though, most console owners would probably already have a subscription for the respective service (XBL, PS+) for other games, so it probably isn’t limited too many people anyway (I don’t know XBL’s policy for F2P games).
Personally I think that this might be something they might look at further down the road, far, far down (maybe a year or few). I say this because they are still trying to launch the game in other places such as china for example. They are doing this while also getting through the teething stages of mastering this game to get it where they want it (as well as us the player base finally understanding as they do and “getting it” and accepting it).
Prepare to face all the console haters coming to flame this thread because they exist on these forums I have seen it before lol. Having said that I think that GW2 was designed with consoles being in mind as a possible thing later if they ever wanted to. You only need to see the smaller skill bars and other things to see this.
So for right now I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Also another thing PS4 is still very new out, they would want to see stats from that side too as well I would assume before they commited to anything, as well as how other games offer their services via it etc.
These kind of decissions are a long term decission. At the moment Arenanet has committed themself on 3 things:
1: living story updates every two weeks
2: release in Asian market
3: development of expansion (or expansion type) content.
So if this is going to be considered development will likely not start before these three goals are reached.
On top of that I think that the PS4 audience is pretty small. MMORPG-content on consoles is still very small on consoles, so this investment would be a riskfull investment.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Why can’t Arenanet go this way as well?
The main problem is the update verification delay. Any, even smallest, patch to a PS3-4 game needs to get through Sony verification and approval process. This is a serious impediment to any MMO – the whole update structure of the game would have to be changed for this.
Anet apparently does not think that the potential gains from expanding to console gamers crowd would outweight the costs it would require.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
I highly doubt that will happen. Anet has plenty on their plate with the Chinese launch and making content. I really really doubt Gw2 will ever be on console.
I’d suggest saving up and rebuilding your computer if that’s why you hope for ps4 launch. You’ll get more milage out of nice PC anyways over a ps4.
you want a reason why not, beside the part where everything needs to be adjusted to fit on a tiny controller, this is why.
what GW2 needs to be able to use all the features:

what a controller has:

i really can’t put it any easier…..
GW2 would sooner go on a Steambox/ Steam OS than a ps4.

They could outsource the port-to-console, however I think this is a bit of a long term investment, since (I haven’t read anything about PS4 architecture, but it comes off as downscaled PC, so this might not be an issue…) you’d probably still need to technically adapt the content patches for the console so they’d probably need a console team. I guess they could make a couple of arrangements with SOE, they have some experience in the console MMO area.

These days technology has come so far you can plug a mouse and keyboard INTO gaming consoles, funny enough you can ALSO plug controllers into a PC.
Besides that you CAN make games like this controller viable/friendly, FF14 is a good example and so was 11. Wake up and get out of the stone age already dude. :P
The PS4, like the PS3, uses OpenGL for the graphics. GW2 is built on DirectX.
Arenanet won’t even shift to OpenGL for the OS X client – so I doubt they have the resources to do so for a theoretical PS4 client either. Also before someone goes shouting off falsities about the PS4 having a higher gamer base than OS X – you’d be wrong. The PS4’s sales aren’t quite high enough for that to be true yet.

It can be controller friendly, but the controller users will still be at a HUGE disadvantage. Honestly, if they end up porting it I’d rather see separate servers. I don’t really want to play with people hugely gimping themselves because they chose to use a controller over a proper KB/M, especially in PvP.
Also, the rather weak CPUs of the next gen consoles could present a rather significant barrier to getting the game on them as well.

Like I said, players can always plug in a keyboard and mouse. Right now you may be teaming with people in GW2 who are using a controller and “gimping themselves” and you might not even know it.
GW2 should never become a console game.
It was born with the PC intent and should remain like this.
Opening the game to an entire different audience of players that have a completely different mind about their games, since they play them on consoles with different mechanisms that often change if not penalize games in terms of gameplay and settings, means that GW2 should listen to two different communities that start from two different points of view.
So the game would become an orphan, since it would listen to different suggestions that would always care about adjusting the game on their system, ignoring the other. Anet would be split in half and the game would result in having low quality for more quantity, which is not convenient.
The average PC player is more careful about the game because it must learn to manage even the technical aspects and gameplay aspects.
The average console player usually needs or expects to just play the game, without worrying about it too much.
I hope not. Supporting an additional platform with non-trivial differences requires a large amount of resources, resources I would prefer to be used on enhancing the current PC platform game.
