It’s now officially the last day of the year in Europe, and an entire year of possibilities lie ahead. That said, the prospects of what awaits GW2 is both exciting and daunting. How different will the game be this time next year, how many of the changes will be welcomed with glee, and how many will bring down the wrath of fans on this here forum.

Well, let’s remain hopeful, and I think a good idea to start off the coming year from ANet’s side would be to openly communicate their intentions. Sure, a lot of things will change as time passes, even some ideas that seem valid now might be thrown out in a months time.

That does not matter though, a moderate sense of trepidation still lingers after the Lost Shore patch and I strongly believe that an open book of how ANet intends to start the year would do the fans a lot of good. A blog would perhaps be a good place to bring this together. All I’m saying is that an entire year worth of content awaits us, and I’m pretty sure the guys and gals at ANet are filled with concepts of where they intend to push the game over the next few months, and it would definitely be a good step to share a few of those intentions with the GW2 fan base.

My feelings is that they have to rush in “fluff” activities other MMOs have too – fishing, housing, mounts, etc… – the game for now is almost only centered on combat. ANet must not underestimate how much those “fluff” non combat activities keep players busy – and housing or mounts, for instance, are very good opportunities to sell some juicy wanted stuff in the gem store too for the game’s income.

What I want is that when I log into GW2, I ask myself “what the hell am I going to do? I have so many choices, and all are viable and fun!”.

And I hope ANet will give up wanting to become another tiered gear game, and that ascended gear will become widely available without having to farm the same single dungeon.

The ball is in your camp now, developers. Good luck, and a happy new year to you all.

Agree with the fluff part, but I think Anet should also add different ways of leveling, right now doing hearts seems to be the only viable option, It would be cool if more dungeons were added and PVP gave XP.

On my own note, I seriously think that it would be wise to have some kind of expansion in 2013. From my experience in WOW, an expansion stimulates the game a lot by causing players to play more, bringing people back to the game, and getting publicity for the game itself.

PvP gives XP – a couple of people in my guild leveled almost only with World vs World.
And if you think about it, GW2 already gives way more “freedom” to level than most if not all other MMORPGs on the market… you can of course do hearts/events, but you can also, as mentioned, do WvW PvP, or you can just craft your way to 80 (you can get to 80 with only crafting if you really want). And you are not restricted to zones of your precise level, but you can go back to any lower level zone you never did and get rewarded appropriately to your real level too. What other “theme park” MMO offers that? I’ve been playing through “Pandaria” lately and hell, how boring it is, you’re on rails, no choice, no variations… in GW2, I can go where I want to level.

Sorry, I should have been specific, as I meant sPVP, not WvW, my bad. I once tried to level purely through crafting, and I found it incredibly slow going, not to mention boring. I quickly returned to doing hearts after that. Also, I thought that the XP from doing hearts was directly related to the level of the heart? I felt that doing level 15-25 zones at lvl 35 was a lot slower than doing ones my level…

“Slower” is relative… you may get a bit less XP per event, but it makes sense, since you are also much more powerful and kill stuff way faster in compensation. At the end the XP/time ratio is the same.
For instance, doing a 50.000 XP event in 10 minutes is the same than doing 2 25.000 XP events in 5 minutes each… and the XP reduction in GW2 is way less harsh than my example.

I agree with much of what has been said player housing and more mini-games to keep us busy. Also I’d like to see more armor and weapon skins on the BLTC, I’m more than willing to spend money on gems but at the moment there is not enough in the BLTC that appeals to me. Other than that I’m excited about the January and February updates. More guild options would be nice, guild halls as well would be a good addition. Whatever happens I only hope they improve on the game in all aspects.

If they added something like housing, fashion (more in game accessible town clothing), fishing and all the crafting that goes along with fishing including props like parasols, chairs, picnics, camp sites etc. then I think many of us would actually be happier with the game. These small things would actually give us something to do until they fixed the classes and the loot problems. I would welcome them.

Every decision that they make in 2013 will be aimed at increasing revenue in the cash shop. At the moment, people are trying desperately to obtain precursors, failing, and leaving the game (such as one of my Guild mates did, he was so sick of trying he deleted his main and walked away).

So you can expect ArenaNet to add a way for everyone to get their very own precursor. That way, everyone will be chasing the mats for them, demand will increase and prices will go up. People will buy gold with real money to be able to afford these mats.

We might even see an expansion towards the end of the year, with a new level cap, new zones, new instanced dungeons (/shudder) and of course, new gear. And because they will have learned from mistakes they have made so far, you can expect a more streamlined way to get everyone to buy some gems, instead of just a small minority spending lots and lots of real money.

As for PvP, chances are the loss of interest from the casual side of the game will prompt a balance pass to be made that changes the way the game is currently played, so that the game is more 1v1 friendly. As for WvW, no idea, that game mode has its own set of issues. Swiftness granting NPCs, like the ones found in the cities would be nice though, as all that running around can be very tedious. Granting a 100% run speed buff, but having it fall off the moment the player takes damage, would be brilliant.

Personal Hopes and Speculations for the January – February Updates

  • The pre-cursor scavenger hunt will be implemented.
  • New Fractals will be added. A new even number Fractal will also be added (i.e. Jade Maw)
  • Zhaitan fight will be re-worked and implemented; other dungeon encounters will still be in the process of being re-worked / held back so they can all be implemented together.
  • Nic the Traveller will be re-incarnated (possibly as Amaranth).
  • Ascended Armour will start to be released, as well as various ways of getting them (WvW, Open-World PvE).
  • New areas (possibly the Dominion of Winds, as well as Ring of Fire in Jan / Feb respectively, paving the way for a possible Cantha / Elona expac later on in the year). Southsun Shore will be added to.
  • More fluff will be introduced, so not everything is combat.
  • Possible new skills will be added, as well as the ability to swap weapon skills out (pure hope).
  • February will house the Canthan New Year holiday event. Celestial Serpent will be available as a mini-pet.
  • One-time events will be used to introduce new content (i.e. You need to help take back Dominion of Winds). Events will happen in various places at the same time in order to cut down on lag issues.
Life is a journey.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.

Most important part: These two months combined are basically an expansion’s worth of content for free.

I DO believe we will be surprised, positively, by the January update.

Also, February update is WvW update and Ascended gear will become available in WvW, I wonder when it will becoem available from Dungeons, January (together with the Fractals update) or March?

I was gonna say Necro enhancements/improvements/changes, but that’s due 2015.

Separation of PvP / PvE related achievements, mainly Map Completion. I hate everything about WvWvW so having map completion separate for that would make my day.

Less emphasis on Greatsword skins and give the others some cool looking skins.

Engine Optimization.

Emotes.

More stuff to do for those that are not interested in 3/4 of the boring/poorly designed/grindfest stuff. There’s gotta be some sort of contrast.

I really want them to focus on making Guilds better and more robust. With a Guild Hall, guild events and of course GvG pvp. I think that alone would make a lot of people happy.

Like Aiden said, make dueling a thing. I can’t believe they did not have this option in the game.

I’m pretty neutral on player housing, although I’m sure it would make the RPers much happier. LotRO had a pretty nice player housing concept and I would invest some gold/gems in a similar housing scenario.

Optimization. Seriously, fighting Claw of Jorlag really hurts my system.

And lastly, some of the world opened up to explore.

I expect a lot of inspansions, which is the opposite of expansions. Revisit old parts of the world and add more stuff. War in Kryta and Winds of Change are perfect examples of how to revisit old content. Titles and reputation will be good things for this.

Please try to remember what GW1 looked like after half a year. The game was almost dead, and most content was exhausted, yet the foundation was solid. I logged in many times because I wanted to play yet had no reason to. Factions and Nightfall revived the game and turned the stale world in a living one.

Personally I expect the same in GW2. By summer even the casual people will have exhausted all content. A few good patches and an expansion will then make this game perfect. All that can and must be done without raising either level cap or stat cap.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

they were so bad when you compare them to the fractals.

ok, story part is fun, but then, they just seem like a mess to play thru compared to the fractals which have far superior and more streamlined maps, team strategies, balance and boss fights.

secondly; they need a lot more social features and bragging features.
guild halls/player housing is a must imo.
lfg tool too.
and some features to put a little bit more competitive spice in the pve realm, because as it is a lot of player quit because they feel they cant “shine” (actually only your fractal level is worthy of bragging about right now in term of raw skills in pve)

Given the number of exploits/bugs and the usage of revive orbs in Fractals, even your Fractal level isn’t worth bragging about :P

As for other potentially “worth bragging for” things someone might do in the game:
Legendaries can be bought with real money… yeah nothing worth bragging about them. No skill required even without real money, just an endless grind/farm.
Full <dungeon name> set, isn’t worth either, it means you farmed one super easy path 100 times or, in the case of Arah, killed the first boss in path3 a few hundred times.

The only “title” PVE-wise that is worth displaying/acquiring (in my opinion) is the Dungeon Master, if it was character bound instead of account even better. Of course someone might argue that one that has it was “carried” by his friends, true, but I can’t think of anything other worth bragging about.
