Guild Wars 3?
Happy to see it someday, but lets finish GW2 story arc with the dragons waking up first.
WoW is how many years old now? Is there a WoW 2 planned for that game?
No. And no to your question.
ANet may give it to you.
They are just starting work on the 2nd expansion to GW2, I doubt very much they are thinking of GW3 with only having one expansion out for the game.
Sorry I am not familiar with the lore yet or the entirety of the game for that matter. It’s just a great game, I wish content was pumped out faster while still being quality. 3-4 years and only 1 xpac? I came from WoW, played since vanilla. But the game is just stale, mostly from slow release dates and killing off all the good characters. This game is fun even without knowing anything, I could whirlwind around aimlessly and enjoy myself. The weapon art on the Halloween models are fantastic!!!

I thought there was another thread out there also discussing what to expect in GW3 and how long from now it might happen if ever, but I can’t find it now.

You missed the start of the game. They tried to do Living World temporary content, but that didn’t work out because new players and old players who didn’t log on during that time missed these events and never got to see them. After a couple of years of trying to do only Living World they shifted to the expansion model and released the first expansion some months back.
Edit: possibly also they weren’t making enough income with free Living World and gemstore sales and had to shift to a paid expansion model and gemstore sales.
ANet may give it to you.

No. And no to your question.
Those are 2 completely different games, why compare them and even say because of game x it will also happen to game y?
Besides there’s a guildwars 1 and guildwars 2.
On topic: there’s a lot of lore which could open up a lot for future content, being it via expansions or a whole new game.
There was also a non official guildwars world map posted, somewhere sometime, including gw1 and gw2 maps, but also with other facts they got out of gw-books I believe. This is really a huge map, about 20 or 30 times bigger then current gw2 worldmap roughly if I remember correctly, which sparks the imagination of gw2-expansions or gw3 content.
Even if, I think it will take 5 years at least. I’ll never forget the first info about gw2 was released and when it finally came out, that was also about 5 years of “when it’s ready”. The pain… Lol. If they will release it ever, I hope they’ll shorten that period :P.
Maybe Anet would love to as well, but there’s so many things that can change on so many topics that could change that outcome though.

In case you didn’t notice the OP said he had came from WoW and I was pointing out that WoW, which is a much older game and a much more dated game, doesn’t have plans to be remade. This game isn’t even 4 years old yet and there are posts asking for it to be essentially abandoned by the Devs, and for us all to be sitting around with no expansions or major content additions for who knows how many years while they make another game. It’s both an annoying post as well as a pointless one as the Devs aren’t going to drop this game and the income from it to chase after another version of gw while this game is so young and they are still working on improving it.

There’s a part of me that remembers the long, multi-year anticipation for GW2 that goes into a panic any time I see the letters “GW3.”
Easy now. I’m still expecting a fair few more years out of the game we have.
@ just a flesh wound.
I see, I misinterpreted what you said.
GW2 still has a lot of life left. I’m looking forward to the next expansion. Assuming they learned some lessons from the failure of HoT.
Hopefully these lessons:
1. metrics suck.
2. WvW pays the bills.
3. expansions should be EXPANSIVE (bigger than HoT).
4. cash grabs turn people off, and away.
5. GW does not mean GRIND Wars.

If you want to be even more blown away by the game, I would suggest diving in the lore a bit. You can start from the very beginning in Guild Wars 1.
You can still purchase and play:
Guild Wars: Prophecies
Guild Wars: Factions
Guild Wars: Nightfall
Guild Wars: Eye of the North
Plus, while learning the lore of Guild Wars, you are able to earn Rewards and Achievement Points for Guild Wars 2.

You Can find them much much cheaper on:
Amazon
Game Stop/ EB Games (depending on your location)

If you don’t want to spend any cash and just want to read the lore you can check out the original wiki :

Once you know the Lore from Guild Wars, you will find Guild Wars 2 lore more interesting and would appreciate some of the smaller things. It would also make a lot more sense why certain races behave in certain ways
Not to mention, it’s just cool to see how the maps changed from GW1 to GW2… some for the better, some for the worse.

I would be more than grateful, if there was Guildwars 3, especially as Guildwars 2 is so much worst than Guildwars 1. Lots of game like WoW or Guildwars 2, and none like Guildwars 1 exist on the market.
Hope ArenaNet one day stop stealing ideas from blizzard, and will develop again their own, original and unique product like Guildwars 1 was.
No thanks, I would prefer it if anet just keeps developing GW2 for a long time. I don’t want to lose all my progress and start over. Maybe in 10 years when we’ve killed all the dragons and had a bunch of expansions, but not anytime soon.

With that argumentation you could also ask why they’ve abandoned Guild Wars 1 and started GW2 instead of releasing GW:Utopia. They decided to put parts of that into EotN while adding other parts to GW2 (asuran regions) or HoT (chronomancer).
GW1 has been 2,5 years old when they released the last part – EotN.
and for us all to be sitting around with no expansions or major content additions for who knows how many years while they make another game.
If people didn’t ask for an add-on we wouldn’t even have had HoT released. That request lead to a rushed concept, cutting content and a the ‘half expansion’ many people called it at release.
It’s both an annoying post as well as a pointless one as the Devs aren’t going to drop this game and the income from it to chase after another version of gw while this game is so young and they are still working on improving it.
Again, GW1: 2,5 years. They scrapped the last campaign Utopia and started GW2. So it happened before.
Guild Wars 3: Quaggans in SPAAACE
After the destruction of their home planet due to the actions of adventurers who disrupted the planet’s natural mechanism for controlling magic, travel with the last surviving species from the planet Tyria as they search for a new world they can call their own.

Guild Wars 1 is a CORPG, or Competitive/Cooperative Online Role Playing Game.
Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG.
You can’t really compare the two like that. Different business models/rules for different genres. MMORPG’s generally run a lot longer, and they should considering it takes a lot longer to ‘complete’ it.

They scrapped gw1 because they wanted to do more than what the game engine could do. They also wanted to make a full MMO, not a lobby game with instanced maps.
If the situation changes in that the engine can no longer do what they want it to do or if they decide to make a totally different gw and if they’re wiling to take a drop in income for the years necessary to make this new game, then if these are true maybe we’ll see a gw3 announced in production.
But don’t hold your breath for it.
ANet may give it to you.
Guild Wars 1 is a CORPG, or Competitive/Cooperative Online Role Playing Game.
Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG.
That doesn’t work here. Stop using comparisons like that completely out of context.
GW:Utopia has already been in developement.
You can’t really compare the two like that. Different business models/rules for different genres. MMORPG’s generally run a lot longer, and they should considering it takes a lot longer to ‘complete’ it.
You’re using generalizations to justify your argumentation. The business model remains the same: buy2play + add-ons. There are no rules for how long a game of a certain genre will be developed. And there are no general statements on when a game is ‘complete’ as you said or how long it takes to do so.
Edit: mixed up quotations

That’s right. As you might know GW2 runs on a heavily modified GW1 engine. There are lots of limitations we’ve got in GW2 because of that. Sometime they’ll just say:
the engine can no longer do what they want it to do or if they decide to make a totally different gw and if they’re wiling to take a drop in income for the years necessary to make this new game, then if these are true maybe we’ll see a gw3 announced in production.

Yes it does. I didn’t use anything out of context.
Gw1 was basically a singleplayer game with co-op and interactive lobbies (and a multiplayer mode on the side). Guild Wars 2 is a full on MMO. Different business models for different games. Period.
GW:Utopia has already been in developement.
So? As Just a Flesh Wound already stated, anet wanted to do more than gw1’s engine could handle, so they cancelled it and incorporated several of it’s elements into gw2.

What do you mean by that? The business model remains the same, both GW1 and GW2 are multiplayer games, buy2play with add-ons. They could have continued earning money with GW1 as well as GW2 can do in the future. Also, we do know that this is not the reason for GW2.
GW:Utopia has already been in developement.
So? As Just a Flesh Wound already stated, anet wanted to do more than gw1’s engine could handle, so they cancelled it and incorporated several of it’s elements into gw2.
That’s exactly what I said in my last post.
Now, as you read it you might see that GW2 is still running on a modified GW1 engine. One day, the same thing will happen to GW2. There are limits. The engine is more than 11 years old. No one knows when it’s time to end it and start all over again.
(edited by Tekey.7946)
What I meant by that is that MMORPG’s are often meant to have a much longer lifespan. They are filled to the brim with mechanics meant to keep people in the game, progression that can last for years (like Achievement points, collections, Masteries etc.). Throughout the years these games usually get expansions and content updates that allow people to progress their characters more and more. With MMO’s a company will milk a game as long as possible, even if it takes many years (like wow for example).
Gw1 did something very similar, but it was CORPG. It contained a lot less grind and progression mechanics. You could reach max level in a day and it was a lot easier to get prestigious gear, there were no extensive progression mechanics. Which is perfectly fine of course, but that’s not the way MMO’s work. With GW1 every ‘expansion’ was basically a full blown standalone game (except Eotn). That’s really cool and all, but it’s also a lot more work.
You also don’t see
World of Warcraft 2, 3, 4
Runescape 2, 3, 4
EVE 2, 3 ,4
ESO 2, 3, 4
These games are all meant to run for many years (some already do) and gw2 is no different. That’s the way I prefer it, I’d like to see my characters grow over the course of many years, not start all over every 2,5 years.

I’ve seen several of these threads and the impression I’ve gotten is that they think it’s going to be fast. The devs will announce it and in a year or two, gw3!
It’s not going to be fast. It will be years in production.
The devs will have to decide that the engine no longer fits their needs. They will have to willing to take the sure income loss when they stop actively working on this game to go for possible income years away. They will need to take on millions of dollars in loans and hire extra staff. In effect, they’ll be trading their bird in the hand for 2 in the bush. That worked out for them when they transitioned from gw1 to gw2, but there’s a lot of completion in games out there and leaving a sure thing for an unsure thing with all the losses and costs tied to it is not likely.
The game is only 4 years old. There are MMOs that are far older and still running. Maybe in future years they’ll announce gw3 is in production, but even when they do it will still be more years before the game launches.
So, don’t hold your breath on it. Any gw3 is years from now.
ANet may give it to you.
Lot of you went to the point, If game has success as “CORPG”, why developing MORPG at all? There is a lot of MORPG. Personally I don’t like all the time resurrecting mobs and (for egz.) pink wearing asura jumping all over my screen, this was why I haven’t bought Wow and I have payed for GW.
I’m pretty sure GW3 won’t happen any time soon and I’m very happy with that since I’d rather see them working on more expansions to this game (which they probably are.) GW2 has so much potential.
I get the impression that a lot of people that demand a GW3 hasn’t even played GW2 that long, which makes it even more absurd.
I haven’t been playing GW2 for very long myself but am enjoying it immensely! I’ve been taking my time and leveling up naturally so am only lvl 74. I still have tons to learn, explore and play but…….
I hadn’t thought about buying GW1 and being able to learn anything. Usually once a game releases an expansion of this magnitude the original is pretty obsolete. But with what Behellagh pointed out I may be buying GW1 eventually and having some fun.
If gw3 was a thing they better have a lot more things pertaining to war, like boat / airship battles. Flight mechanics, wall scaling (throwing ropes up walls or ladders) the whole shabang bang

Exactly this – GW2 graphics are good enough – we don’t need GW3 for a few years now.
I would rather see them make GW2 into more of an evolving world/engine instead of making a whole new game. Why brush aside all the GW2 content for GW2 when they could just keep it and improve the game over time.
Guild Wars 3: Quaggans in SPAAACE
Count me as the first to pre-order. Anet – make this happen.
gw2 should last for at least 10 years.
2012 – 2022
only then we can think of gw3
If gw3 was a thing they better have a lot more things pertaining to war, like boat / airship battles. Flight mechanics, wall scaling (throwing ropes up walls or ladders) the whole shabang bang
Sounds more like a pipe dream, why would it even be like that?
GW1 just didn’t have the elements to make a working MMO, it was very restricted I mean if I even recall the game didn’t even have both X and Y axis, Gw2 does. I am pretty sure that with current engine GW2 devs are able to expand it and work on it much better and should be able to make Boat / Airship battles if it should ever be a thing. They made GW2 in awareness that they needed an engine that was easier or even possible to mod, GW1 was very restricted. ( I have no fact and I may aswell just rumbeling nonsene, but that is what I think).
Guild Leader of Alpha Sgc [ASGC]
Tbh I’m far more interested in a GW1 remake with the Gw2 engine :P
But as for Gw3.. yeah sure but Gw2 is a long way off needing a successor..
I do hope that Gw3 will be a much better combination of Gw1 and Gw2 though.. take the best elements from both games and make something so epic people would never want to play another MMO again lol
There have been many cool elements from Gw1 in the recent living world patches and that’s made a lot of old players very happy.. continuing this trend is going to make Gw2 so much better than it currently is and I am very excited to see where the future takes us
SERIOUSLY?
Is this talk about Guild Wars 3 still going?
Wake up people! No Guild Wars 3 is coming, not now not in some years not ever probably!
Look at World Of Warcraft, did they do many versions of the game called Warcraft 1,2,3,etc? No! Because they got the right system from the start to create that kind of game.
Same for Gw2, they wanted to create a game that had no limitation like Guild Wars 1, so they decided to just upgrade the engine and the tech…not because they wanted to create a series like Assassin’s Creed…
At first I thought it was funny but now it’s really making me think if people think before they write something like “Guild Wars 3?”…
What you could expect are many expansions coming every 2 years, now that they seem to have found the balance. And no, don’t expect something like Hot for the next expansions, Hot was not well planned, the next if everything goes smooth will be massive!
Cheers folks…
A third game for Guild Wars universe makes absolutely no sense at all. They have the formula: free core game, paid xpacs, and bi-monthly updates. They just have to expand and separate kittening PvP skills from PvE skills for once!
Game won’t be able to progress proactively as long as they try to balance PvP/PvE in one go.
I’d love to see a Guild Wars 3 game, however I don’t think we’re ready to wait until 2021 or later for a release, since that’s the time it would take to make a huge game like this.
I’d prefer more expansions. Also the number of people playing MMORPG’s is dwindling since the rise of mobile gaming (ugh).
Tbh I’m far more interested in a GW1 remake with the Gw2 engine :P
YES!!
Teratus.2859:
Tbh I’m far more interested in a GW1 remake with the Gw2 engine :P
YES x2.
Currently I got few fully leveled characters in GW2 but playing GW1
Guild Wars 2 is only finished after all the dragons are dead and we align ourselves to the various factions/magical realms/mists and war with one another (like various guilds in a war with one another would do).
Some of you guys are being pretty mean to a new player who just wanted to show his enthusiasm for your game…
It’s probably not a good idea to scare people away if you want the community to thrive and grow.
Also, while it’s true that WoW never released a WoW 2, Blizzard did however try to make a new MMORPG with a fresh IP but unfortunately they bit off more then they could chew with an overly ambitious game concept. Instead of scrapping everything however they simply harvested out the arena system and released Overwatch as a MOBA game.
As for all their expansions, some players enjoy them, in the beginning at least, but there are a lot of unhappy people who burn through the content quickly and are left scratching their heads and waiting for something new to happen.
After a certain point with a game you can still get that warm, fuzzy, nostalgia induced buzz when revisiting old content, but the appeal of new content is short lived. For this reason, some people like to dream about completely new games with new worlds to explore. Even if it’s unlikely, it’s okay to let people dream without popping that bubble for them.
GW3? No.
I left the game 3 years ago because of lack of contents. I thought now I look back a little. The game is much better, but many things still need to be.
I think this team is not ripe to prepare the GW3. This game is 4th year old, and only 1 expansion disk. They left the GW1 after ~2.5 years (there where 3 expansion). This team much slower then before (during GW1).
It would not be good if they leave the game, if there would be nothing new for 5 years (because they left GW2 because of GW3 as they already did with GW1->GW2).
IMO They waste much time with temporary events/contents. This game would be awesome if they work faster and better and if they forget the temporary contents. 4 years old game and 0 new dungeon, (ok +1 path yes, but -1 path too in TA) Few new zone.
They need time to fill with contents the GW2.
(edited by chucky.4798)
GW3 will be VR game. It will be really realistic. When you character dies, you die too. So no more rezzing. That is next step of gaming industry.
I hope, everyone will understand that this was a joke.
Maybe make a huge update, chane the name.. making it “World of Tyria” or “The Guild Wars”, change the system..
Very unlikely. The game has been out for 4 years and for an MMORPG, that isn’t long enough period to warrant a sequel.
Otherwise, the MMORPG market isn’t doing well nowadays. Most people are moving to esports centric games like MOBA’S.
I really wish for a Guild Wars 3 as soon as possible.
I bought GW2 at release and play mostly WvW now after the PvE content, but WvW gets a bit boring after 2 years or so.
Soon I guess, I will be playing Crowfall for open PvP.
But what I really loved was EverQuest Next!
I hope so much that GW3 will be exactly like EverQuest Next!
I would support that so much.
You could even do crowdfunding for that.
