I have recently gone over all of the current armor skins to Guild Wars 2 and I can safely say that it feels like they are not even trying anymore. A lot of you will agree with me when I say that almost every single skin for every single armor just does not look good in the least. I would like to see more traditional and reserved sleek armor skins in the game that would not cost us gems. I would also like to hear the opinions of other players to see how many of you agree with me that the games armor skin design is lacking, and to see how many of you would not only agree with me but maybe share some of your ideas with us. Maybe if we get lucky and enough people agree and respond, then one day we all may just have what we are looking for. I play a female human warrior and I would love to see her in a chest piece that looks like a breast plate over a chain short sleeve shirt along with a sleek steel leggings with out the nasty looking hip guards or belt piece that goes down between her legs. Please feel free to post your own ideas of what you would like to see in game someday and lets all hope that the Dev’s see this post and hear our ideas. I will end this post by saying, see you all in game and good hunting!

No, you are right…
At low level the armors don’t look very appealing to me and they -all- look similar to each other. I was hoping when I’d level up and get the next level armor it would look -better- but the difference is VERY subtle and to me not noticable.

Hope it gets better at endgame but I’ve looked on the wiki for all the available armor and only the cultural armor look good on a Sylvari .. the rest does not..

That was one of the things I did not like about GW1. Not a lot of variety and visual progression. I like the way that the dyes work. It pretty much set a new standard of expectation for dyes in other games. But, I find the armor skins themselves somewhat lacking.

I think it’s better in GW2, than in GW1, but I think there still needs to be some imporvement

Male light especially is outright ridiculous a lot of the time.

GW1 had way cooler and variety of armor skins(absolutely loved the tat armors on my monk) and much better dye application. Did you even check all the assorted armors in GW1?

Please, the dye system in GW1 was nothing more than an obnoxious gold sink.

More on topic, though: the amount of armors I would actually use are about the same for both games. However, GW2 would win out in comparison were it not for a number of clipping issues that ruin several sets for me.

the Flamewrath, Flamekissed and Flamewalker gear isn’t anything new at all. Sure it has a fiery effect. But the skins are the exact same as the Mistwalker(pvp medium)/Rawhide armor. The Flamekissed gear is the same as the Feathered armor and the Flamewrath has the Pit Fighter skin.

The one thing id like to see is if all the current armor skins were more racially fit depending on your race

For a game that’s suppose to be driven by armor appeal, they certainly don’t do a good enough job with it. There are of course a couple sets that look cool in the game, but the majority of them don’t, especially male light armor. I looked at every one of the male light armors they sell on the black lion trading and none are appealing at all.
Don’t even get me started on one sided shoulder pieces.

Or weapons… about the only special weapon that looks good usually is a two handed greatsword and that’s probably due to it’s size, I wish staves and two handed hammers were bigger. Real shame when I look at a game like WoW and think they have better looking stuff.

Another derailing post. ^^

Aesthetics are subjective, though. No game will ever manage to appeal to everyone in that regard.

I don’t agree with everything the OP said, but but the game still needs more non-exotic/ascended armor skins.

When a thread about armor pops up every single week, you’d think they start thinking about it. Then you get another medium armor coat/light armor skirt and you realize they might read it, but don’t really care.

Although I can’t really speak to quality, what we do lack is some variety and quantity.

I think a big issue has to do with all the different races / gender / size combination (although race tends to be a bit annoying when a medium armour looks good on my Charr but horrible on my Norn because they’re very literally different armours). So a lot of effort needs to go into creating armour. Effort means Time means Money, means that there’s a reason we mostly see new armour in the TP.
the issue with TP armour of course is that players will expect something new, not a reskin or touch up. However I’m sure players would be a bit less vocal if these armours were made freely available in the game itself. Not saying that all new armours in game should be reskins, but it would be an easy way to increase the quantity in a short amount of time, while every few weeks you bring out a new unique skin (be it TP or in game, although in game would be great).
Small variations on current armour might not seen such a big deal but when creating the perfect look for my character I tend end up saying: “This would be nice, except for this or that”.

And then there is the Issues for Charr…. Clipping of horns, tails and sometimes other parts as faceparts, and forearms… Then we have the removing of ears ans horns (and hair). Then we have the stretching and all tent-ish coats, The female neck (with new faces) get an ugly pointy shape….

Pls Think of horns and tails. Think of how wide our stance is… What looks SO good on humanoids might look horrible on Charr.

I have 3 female Charr – that all I have. Armour in general (with a few exceptions) is sadly a great disapointment so far in this game for my race.

Clipping should not even exist (only as a bug here and there that gets fixed) due to lazyness in design in such a modern game as this… espacially since the whole GW2 is so much about the Graphics and what u SEE (u see u’r charr’s rear end more than anything else in this game while playing thus the clipping – its not pretty).

I guess Asuras might suffer from this too…

Playing an asura or charr is pure suffering when it comes to skins. I would never have rolled my asura had I known they were going to be so lazy with the armors. Right now I’d really love for the priority to be actually making the armors look good on the various races.

I have the feeling they make it for human / sylvari / norn first and then adapt it for Charr / Asura. I guess 3/5 isn’t too bad…

Right now it looks like this is how much time they spend making armor:

  • Female humanoids: 90% of their time.
  • Male humanoid: 8% (generous estimate)
  • Charr: 1%
  • Asura: 1%

If they made unisex racial armor instead, they would be able to spend 20% of their time evenly for each race.

This would let them make each race’s armor more unique, let them have the time to make charr armor that actually fits them, and who knows, they could make sylvari armor that has/shows glow.

Plus if they wanted to make sexy armor for females, they’d have to do it in a way that is sexy for guys too, since it would be unisex. Win win.

It would be silly to go back and re-do all the armors, buy why aren’t new armors done this way? Since release, the new armors are plagued with the same issues as always. I shouldn’t have to play a female humanoid to look good.

Actually, I wish they would make the default town clothes become the beginner gear. It’s really insulting to make a new Charr, and immediately see (on character creation screen) that the tail and horns clip. If they made the beginner town clothes the first armor (for all professions), we’d start with race-appropriate gear, and we could transmute it into higher level armor later if we can’t find something that doesn’t clip.

More skins would be fantastic. As I’ve stated in other threads, I love, love, love the aesthetic aspect of the game. I applaud ANet for the new Zodiac armor, because even though I find it hideous, at least it’s new and different. I “booo” them for the flamekissed reskin – which in my opinion is a complete and utter fiasco.

I desperately want to see more armor added. A lot more. In game AND in the gem store. The company is sorely missing great opportunities for gold and real life money sinks by limiting the armor as they have.

Just my 2 cents, mind you.

Yeah I knew not everyone would agree 100% with me but, I’m just glad to see it isn’t just me that’s finding the armor skins lacking. I like some of your guys ideas as well and I think ANET would do well to try and listen to us the players. When were happy, our wallets are happy, and when their happy, ANET gets our money, and that makes them happy. I would love some better looking gear free of course. but I would be just as happy to at least have the option in the gem store as well. Here’s hoping this thread gets bumped enough to make an impact on them and they take our suggestions and complaints to heart some day. As always guys good luck and good hunting everyone.

I like the Aetherblade heavy myself for Asura, fits their tech bend with a lot of detail and polish. And while it does cost gems, you can (and I did) just convert gold to gems to get it.

I just came back to the game and the armor in-game still looks atrocious for the most part. Of course, there are always exceptions. (I play human/sylvari mostly so I can’t speak for other races.)

I’ve seen a lot of concept art for the armors in this game and they look decent. Then they bring them in-game and they look boxy, overly bulky, and lack fluidity with the body shape or they’re so overly exaggerated that they make your character look fat (those skirts that make you look like you have gigantic birthing hips and a fat butt from behind.). That, or they look like 1 dimensional paper cutouts. Laughable. (Example: Greatswords/swords/zodiac plate/etc…)

Then there’s the recycling of armor skins with flame effects added to them, as others mentioned. Very lazy of them, imo.

I really miss the armors from GW1. This game is very hit or miss as far as armor aesthetics go. And most of them are misses imo.

If there’s anything I would like to see for future armor skins it would be more streamlining with the body. Getting really tired of seeing boxes on my lower legs and hips.

Make sure we keep bumping this thread guys so we can keep it in the public and the Dev’s attention. If we can get more people to read this post and to agree with it, then someday we may actually get a response from ANET as to if they will take our wishes in to account. Let’s aim for page one and keep it there for the future skins for all players!
