Guild Wars on Google Glass
Doing something like this would be like coding an entire new game, I do not think people grasp how long or difficult it is to code such things.
What are the chances of everyone in your physical area playing this game though, also doing a dodge roll while wearing google glass will likely destroy it :p
Hey you should check out the book ‘Rainbows End’ by Vernor Vinge…totally same idea (good book too).
I actually think we’ll be seeing something like this in the far distant magical future.
Here’s a relevant wiki:
’In the novel, augmented reality is dominant, with humans interacting with virtual overlays of reality almost all of the time. This is accomplished by wearing smart clothing providing gesture recognition and contact lenses that can overlay and replace what the eye would normally see with computer graphics, using advanced virtual retinal display (VRD) technology. In addition, haptic feedback is possible by overlaying graphics onto a physical machine such as a robot. This augmentation of reality is used for a variety of purposes:
Commercial (large gaming areas sell gaming environments mixed with haptics). The Cheapnet, a free entry-level service offered by commercial vendors of gaming solutions, can in principle also be used to coordinate networked augmented reality representations across the globe. However, jitter and latency are considerable problems with this basic network when long distances are involved. In the novel, Robert Gu develops an algorithm that partially compensates for these technical deficiencies, and might ultimately allow the inclusion of haptics.’
One can dream.

I would love to see something like this get off the ground, what do you guys think?
Check back in 20-50 years.
What you speak of sound allot like Sword Art Online except there was no real physical movement other than that it sound allot alike this i hope to see our technology eventually advance to where we are able to make virtual reality MMORPG a reality
@Uzi: Brilliant concept. But as Chase mentioned, it’s going to be a very different Guild Wars game by then, with a whole lot of novel coding (and unchartered sales territory) involved. Maybe we’ll have something like that in Guild Wars 5?
I think it’s great, however, that our beloved game is idea fuel for people like Uzi.
I work at Google. The tech is there. Someone just needs to build the game. The biggest problem I see is that there wouldn’t be a huge demand. Yes it sounds cool but in practice not many people would play it. You’d need to get a big group together on a regular basis. Also battery life. All that image processing would ready up the battery in no time. Plus the glass sits in the wrong position for augmented reality. It’s meant to not obstruct your vision. You have to look up and to the side. For a game like this you’d want at least one eye fully covered. That being said, I think augmented reality games are not far off. Every year computers get smaller and faster. I’d give it a few years before someone pulls it off really well.
Traffic should be Champion class monsters!
Run dat train!!
Just realized this was Uzi’s first post, visionary right out of the gate!
This is how the future is created.
Great idea but think about this:
Kill a monster, find a rare armour drop. Salvage and no ecto comes from it.
Immersion lost. Game-breaker.
“Obtaining a legendary should be done through legendary feats…
Not luck and credit cards.”

Yes I understand that the original first gen google glass would not be suitable for this but a cheaper design that could also implement augmented reality that is pushed from the cloud to save gpu/cpu power would I think be very popular pretty fast as it merges the online community with the offline community where people live.
Kids that paint graffiti on the walls in their neighborhood can instead with the proper tools design their own levels and get appreciation for their art in a new way. For example using a 3d pen (or one on every finger) that interacts with the google glass to draw 3d objects in augmented reality to place them around the neighborhood like npc’s or boxes that need to be hit to release xp/loot.
I honestly think it would be interesting for Google/Arenanet to look at this path in cooperation with for example the guild wars team to be the first to bring this to the people. I have a lot more ideas to bring to the table, if more people think the same we can possibly create a world map in guild wars that is actually the world.
And for the people that think this is way in the future, don’t be fooled we will be immersed in augmented reality/VI pretty soon as computation develops exponentially.
