Guild chat outside the game
Before launch there was supposed to be an app that let you see guildies on the map and speak to them in guild chat. It fell through and nothing else has been heard of it.

Slight correction: long before the game was in BETA, ANet mentioned the idea of external apps. Nothing was promised or “supposed” to happen; it was just an idea, along with each character growing their own dye plants over 3 days.

While it wasn’t a promise it was more than a mention. Many people knew about it and were expecting it. There were threads on gw2guru discussing the app, when it would arrive and its features.
For example: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/37604-gw2-mobile-app/
I also remember seeing a mock up of the app. It showed the map of Queensdale and iirc it discussed how you would be able to see the location of guildies on the map and even talk to them.
That was cancelled ages ago.
At any rate the fact that such an app not only didn’t make it but no other similar feature app has shown up suggests that it’s not something that is easy to develop.

It was called ‘Extended Experience’, and there was a News Blog about it. (You can find it using the Wayback Machine.)
The Devs announced its cancellation a few months after launch on these forums. The Devs stated any outside apps would be user-generated using the API. I believe it has been stated (over in the API sub-forum, much later after launch) that nothing in the API would allow chat outside the game, etc.
Before my guild imploded, we used Skype Group Chats for out of game messaging/chats.
Its not quite exactly what you are asking for, but it achieves the same purpose.

We use LINE and IRC. Something external is better since it persists through different games.
