Guild versus Guild in Guild Wars 2
You do realize you could do GvG matches without rating right?
And I’ve never seen such a carebear post in my entire life. You shouldn’t add GvG to the game, because you might hurt someone’s feelings? What is this, kinder garden?
I don’t even play PvP and I’d like to see GvG back. Competitive PvP is only healthy for an MMO. If you aren’t good enough to participate in GvG, well go back to casual sPvP and become better. This isn’t a hard concept.

Our server supports GvG and even offers a channel in our server’s Teamspeak for those wanting to participate in these events.
The OP actually doesn’t mention the real issues behind GvG.
One, it would be one more PvP mode in the game, which would dilute the little PvP community this game has even more. I’m not sure the additional players who would be willing to do GvG would be enough to compensate for the loss of players from sPvP. We would risk changing from a single mode with few players to two PvP modes with very few players.
Two, ArenaNet kept struggling in GW1 to make a Guild versus Guild system that wasn’t just a matter of killing NPCs. The high number of changes to the “Victory or Death” mechanic in GW1 shows how ArenaNet didn’t really know a way to implement a polished GvG experience.
Three, with the ability to be in multiple guilds at the same time, it would be hard to prevent players from abusing whatever reward system ArenaNet implemented by creating fake guilds to be repeteadly defeated by the true guild, thus giving it free wins.

And why do you think there is such a small PvP scene? Because all the serious PvP’ers took off long ago when they saw there was only 1 boring PvP mode in the game, and no support for Esports.

All serious PvPers had taken off long ago from GW1 as well. ArenaNet hasn’t exactly fixed all reasons why they left, so I doubt they would be willing to come back so easily.

But at least the GW1 PvP scene survived longer than a few months. It stayed strong for at least 2-3 years.

That’s why I’m making this discussion. What do you think GvG should reward then? If not a rank/rating to make your guild stand out? Why play GvG then?
I would love GvG and think it would be massively successful if implemented as a 3rd seperate mode to s pvp and wvw. In my version of GvG we would get to use our wvw characters because for me it makes it much more fun. The reason I don’t s pvp very much is the fact that I don’t get to use the characters that I have spent long hours on. GvG could use the s pvp maps and even the same game types to make the transition easy but for me to make it interesting I need to be playing my PvE character.
Over time I would hope that new game modes would arise, leaderboards, rewards, etc. But for now I would just like to play a 5v5 or 10v10 mode that lets me use my regular characters in pretty much any capacity. I would even support a seperate mode that used a smaller version of the WvW borderlands maps but instead of taking objectives it would be more about team skirmishes.
GvG would be a great recreational addition to the game as long as they don’t make it necessary. I doubt there will be any issues if nobody feels forced to do it and simply joined a guild for that if they want something new. Also you can have more than 1 guild so not really an issue on that front.

What I meant to say was: it was not mandatory to do GvG matches for ratings. You made it sound like you could only do so for ratings, so people would be excluded from doing them, because their guild would think they weren’t good enough.
My counter point was that you could GvG without ratings, meaning that it didn’t matter if you won or lost.
Why do GvG without ratings? For fun, practice etc.
Both rated and unrated GvG should be implemented.
