Guild wars 2 copies sold
They don’t keep a running total for the public, or announce “We’ve sold 3,947,032 copies of the game!” Probably still short 4 mil as of 3rd quarter, but once they compile the sales from the holidays they might announce they broke through. A lot of new players are coming into the game.
It still hasn’t reached 4.0 million. As of their Q3 report Guild Wars 2 had only sold 90,000 copies in 2013.
According to wikipedia, Guild Wars 2 is the 25th highest selling PC game of all time. That may sound really good, but Guild Wars 1 is the 11th highest (6.5 million copies sold).
Doesn’t sound right that GW2 sold only 90,000 copies in all of 2013. Maybe in a quarter, but for the whole year? Of course, a Q3 report would not even have sales for the whole year. I imagine they did well over the holidays.

Yes, #25 (ever) in one year is very impressive. Does the rank for GW1 include the sales of all GW1 releases (Prophesies, Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North) or just Prophesies? Many players bought all four, where most GW2 purchases are unique individuals.

It includes all copies sold of base and expansions.
Ok this game sold 3.5 million copies like the first 6th month. It was the fastest selling mmo to reach 3 million. Have they sold over 4 million yet or does Anet keep that stuff secret.
It was 3.5 million in a year not 6 months. It was only the fastest selling MMO in an arbitrary 9 month period.
Numbers.

2013 Q1 = 36,382
2013 Q2 = 28,899
2013 Q3 = 24,481
They sold 120,000 copies last year during Q4. Since the game launched last year I doubt it will do as well this year, but we shall see.
Ok, cool…so they sold ~3.2 million copies by the time the game had been live for just over 1 month. Sounds like a cool record. I wonder why they don’t publicize that.

Because games like Call of Duty sell 7 million copies in one week.

……..Where are you getting this info from?
From Finway.
Q4 2012 120,000
2013 Q1 = 36,382
2013 Q2 = 28,899
2013 Q3 = 24,481
If you add those up and subtract from 3.5 million, you are left with approximately 3.2 million. Thus, they sold ~3.2 million copies by the time the game had been live for just over 1 month. Sounds like a cool record. I wonder why they don’t publicize that.
I don’t think they’ll release the number till GW2 start selling in China.
So it look good on PR how GW2 continues to sell well.

Well…you’re wrong. It’s been highly publicized it took them 6 months to reach 3 million.
edit: scratch that. according to the “Fastest selling mmo of all time” research firm that released that statement, it took 9 months to hit 3 million.
Impressive regardless.

Exactly. So, I wonder what is wrong with the Quarterly reports. Something, as I said, doesn’t seem right.

Good point.
I know they hit 2 million shortly after launch and they shut down sales for a bit to increase servers, after that news reports get sketchy till the 6 month mark where I am seeing 3 million sold.
But then the research firm says 3 million sold in 9 months, then we have the 3.5 million number released by anet at the one year anniversary. Very little of that info adds up if we go by the quarterly reports.
Shrug, who knows.
Well, I double checked those numbers and you can download the financial reports here: http://www.ncsoft.net/global/ir/earnings.aspx
According to the financial reports, Guild Wars 2 sold 256,000 copies since Sept 2012. That doesn’t add up in any way with the statement below (from GW2’s wikipedia page)
As reported by NCsoft and ArenaNet, by September 13 (about 2 weeks after launch), despite temporarily halting first-party sales, the game has sold over 2 million copies. By January 2013, over 3 million copies of the game have been sold. By August 2013 the sales have shifted 3.5 million copies.
Maybe a dev can step in a clarify things *cough *cough

It is likely only counting digital sales directly through Ncsoft/anet.
Finnway I’m well versed in NCSOFT’s quarterly reports and I’ve never seen them list copies of any game they’ve sold (well they did at one time list accounts in GW for a while since it didn’t have monthly subscriptions).
Those numbers you are quoting are income numbers in millions of South Korean Won. That’s roughly $150 million USD in 2012 and $80 million USD in the first nine months of 2013 and that includes game and gem sales. ANet announced the 3 million number mid Jan 2013 and 3.5 million at the one year anniversary in the end of August.

Of course new game sales are huge with a game comes out and around the first holiday period as long as the game is still considered “new” and is still popular. Seeing a number of new players in game now that this holiday season is over plus the sale on the digital download version sold a few more copies of the game but I wouldn’t expect them to break 4 million until next anniversary. Unless they release a paid expansion that requires the original game since that would drum up interest.
Don’t forget, MMO gamers in general have been trained to max level, burn through content ASAP and flitter off to the next new shinny MMO so interest wains quickly on a game that’s over a year old and isn’t called WoW.
Edit: The $80 million in 2013 is only the first 9 months of 2013.
RIP City of Heroes

GW1’s 6.5 million copies of all campaigns and expansion together or separately in 7 years of its existence where prices dropped from 60 USD to 10 USD all campaigns together
GW2 3.5 million copies of 1 campaign in 1 year and few months of its existence, with prices varied from 60 USD to 35 USD
If GW2 releases more campaigns they will add sales like 1.5 million / campaign and also if they make bundles of 10 USD, I am sure in 7 years it will overpass GW1 with a lot more

Alright, thanks for the clarification.
Did anyone else read the title and think, “I’m pretty sure there’s been more than 2 copies of Guild Wars sold.”?
