Agree with the OP strongly. I can’t log in to FFXI anymore after 8 years of play, because all I can see is the old fashioned gameplay. After GW2 I just can’t stand it – the gameplay is much too restrictive.

I also note that LOTRO and other MMOs are taking up ideas from GW2 piecemeal, and the trend is even starting to bleed into single player RPGs.

Hats off to the developers – paradigm shift in the genre. Well done!

Shift was with the launch of Age of Conan, aoc’s combat system is far superior to GW2, their art detail is far superior aswell not to mention The Secret World although not my type of mmo it too pushes the boundaries alot further imo than does gw2.

I installed TSW after I started getting bored here. A bit darker visually and story wise. There actually IS a story, everything seems to ‘mesh’ much more completely. I have not made it out of the ‘start area’ quite yet, still trying to milk my $$ worth out of GW2.

I can relate in a way, OP.

My reason is because most other mmos combat is too bland for me after playing gw2.

I always play caster types and I can never again stand still while casting most of my spells in an mmo again. Gw2 has forever altered that expectation from me when it comes to caster mobility.

Gw2 spoiled me for these reasons:

—the easy map travel
—access to the TP anywhere in the world to empty my backpack
—being able to sell items immediately
—easy to find quest locations
—no difficulties in knowing which quests are completed per zone.
—able to deposit crafting materials into the bank.
—storyline quests

Let me start by stating, I am by no means bashing GW2, haha, faaaaaaar from it! In fact, GW2 has given me almost everything i look for in MMO’s. Fun leveling, awesome armor sets, skinning your armor, voice acting, beautiful graphics, no more repetitive quests, epic WvWvW, crafting exp, and the nostalgic feeling of exploring.

But what my title states, is that i can no longer play any MMO that follows the gruesome quest log, collecting quests, and so on! I’ve been raised to believe all of that is standard and the only way to enjoy MMO’s. But Guild Wars has changed my outlook on online gaming. I know some of you may not fully agree with what i am going say, but Guild Wars 2 has revolutionized MMO gaming, for me at least.

Like today, i was bored, and decided to revisit Aion seeing as it went f2p. Not even 30 seconds in, i gave up because i could not stand reading through the quest logs, knowing i had to kill 6 wolves, and find like 10 chicken eggs. >.<

anyone else experiencing this as well? Anyone else try Visiting/ revisting other MMO’s and just couldn’t stand it?

Preaching to the choir. My first dabble into GW2 was, I think, pre-official Beta and to be honest, the first hour or so felt odd… like learning to walk again. From then on, though, that was it. Love at first dodge. The thought of a static quest-bang world… I shudder at the concept. It’s as though we’re in the next generation of theme park styled MMOs and you don’t realize how flawed the prior generation was until you look back at it and wonder “what the puppy were they thinking?”.

If the game is so great why are you bored and trying other games OP?

Just because you like one game it doesn’t mean you must limit yourself to it.
I personally enjoyed Skyrim for instance but I’m not pidgeon-holing myself to it.

We are talking about how the evolved mechanics of GW2 ruined our ability to play static MMOs with outdated, gimmicky mechanics.
If I was to run a WoW dungeon today, with the easymode trinity and rotation-based combat it wouldn’t be a lot before I fall asleep.

Of course some may still like the more accessible and simple-minded gameplay of ’90s MMOs with foolproof automatic dodge/block etc, but even the MMO market now is evolving toward a more stay-awake-and-actually-use-your-real-skills type of system and more and more people just needed this.

Different people look for different things into games, and finally someone decided to create games for those who were tired with autopilot mechanics.

I installed TSW after I started getting bored here. A bit darker visually and story wise. There actually IS a story, everything seems to ‘mesh’ much more completely. I have not made it out of the ‘start area’ quite yet, still trying to milk my $$ worth out of GW2.

I bought TSW when it first came out, and I really like a lot of things about it – the setting, the “investigation” missions that involve going outside the game to get information, the classless system, et. al. The problem I had with it was that the combat was boring and clunky, and there was just way too much of it. I couldn’t do the parts of the game that I was interested in, without trudging through stuff I hated.

GW2 lets me do what I’m in the mood to do and there’s at least some reward for doing it, whether it’s exploring, crafting, gathering, WvW, running dungeons, or just cutting a swath through the risen to see if I can beat some heavy moldy bags out of them. And if I get bored of the jungle, I can head over the the Shiverpeaks for a change of scenery, and still get rewards commensurate with my level.

I like this post. I felt the same way. Loved the world, but it offered little choice to me. The crafting was not crafting IMO. The build there needed to be real close to perfect, here you can fake it.

GW2 offers me plenty. Even after getting to 80 twice. Now I wanna do it with another class.

GW2 just delivers its choices with such high quality and polish that the other ten or so MMO’s I’ve played just feel old and stale – every single one of them.

My problems are that GW2 is not filling all my MMO needs, specifically raiding – but that’s OT and argued about in other threads, and somehow PvP still hasn’t clicked for me (whereas I loved WoW BG’s). Also, I’d love a darker, more dangerous setting for my MMO escapism, something like a Borg-overrun Federation quadrant for SF, Jack Vance’s Dying Earth setting for fantasy, or even a Neuromancer-y cyberpunk setting.

My point is: there’s room for plenty other MMO’s, if they match the obvious leap in production quality that ANet has brought to the table, and combine it with a fresh setting. Make (part of) it the casual nirvana that GW2 is, and I could play two – or three.

Send an Asura who knows math. Problem solved.

I will keep an eye on TESO and Camelot Unchained though. But only if they come with reasonable leveling. God I hate leveling…

I also bought TSW on release, and also had to walk away from it. Too much combat, too mindless. Also, the game was advertised as a game with no levels. But it had experience points and you got skill points to buy skills, which you had to unlock in a specific order. So all they really did was take out the number. You were still leveling.

The real issue for me though was that they didn’t voice the player in the cut scenes. Every quest you got was a monologue. The writing and voice acting was great, but the whole monologue thing made me feel like a mute. I wasn’t even there. Terrible design decision.

In the end, I couldn’t keep playing it. Fortunately for me, I like the game I am playing. lol

Plus Runes of Magic has an Aussie server so i get no lag.. like here..it has a lot more skills too.

I smile a little. Glad to see someone played this little game here in GW2 – I played Runes of Magic for almost 3 years, and only recently semi-retired. But I think you have been away for a long time: there is no longer an “Aussie” server.

Many things have since changed.

The Aussie-based GMs have been let go. There are no more Aussie staff running the game in Australia. And just a month ago, they move the “Aussie” server to Florida. Yes, the United States. So now the ping in “Aussie” server is the same one you get as if you are in a US server. No explanation, no notice – server got moved just like that in a small “regular” maintenance. Many regulars in Thalia has quit the game. I log on now and then to catch up with guildies, and to actually enjoy a round of Guild Siege. The Siege is the one thing I hope Guild Wars 2 will give us (basically a guild vs guild arena) soon.

That is sad news thank you for the update, what a shame..yes its been a year or so since i last played it.

I guess the Secret world it is then if loot isn’t majorly revamped..

Pretty sure PlanetSide2 is doing fabulously.

The best part of GW2 is the dodge mechanic. I can’t play any other MMO that doesn’t let me dodge or evade attacks coming at me — and I’m not talking about using LoS like in WoW. I wish every game got rid of “hit chance”, and just let you either dodge it or not.

If you like it that much, you should give TERA a try. They just went Free2Play.

It’s actually an action MMO (unlike GW2 which just added Dodge), where you can dodge everything once you’re good enough at it. All attacks are skill-shots and hitboxes are more relevant in combat.

I Tried TERA as well, combat was cool. But again going back to how you have to read quest logs, i lost my patients XD

The combat in TERA seems outstanding but as soon as I noticed my quest log start to fill to scrolling with x/xs, I lost my nerve.

I agree with OP 100%, my and my gf just started playing WoW again. After a 4 year break for me, and soooooo many things annoy me about that game now.

The NUMBER ONE thing, is that if I am randomly exploring the world and come across some cool looking area, like an ancient ruin, summoning circle, huge boss looking NPC, I want to interact with it! At the very least, I want to kill it and get some loot. But if you are not on the requsite quest, which is possibly part of some lenghty chain, then DON’T BOTHER. Cause you will learn nothing about the area, get no loot from a quest npc, and achieve nothing.

In GW2 anything interesting you see you can usualy interact with in some meaningful way. And any sweet dynamic event that’s going on you can jump right into.

Also depositing collectibles is awesome, as well as having bank access at crafting areas.
Also down/upleveling.
Also…everything.

Only reason I hopped back onto WoW is that the endgame in GW2 is fairly lacking. Got an 80 geared out, ascended rings, got big into WvW but it can be a tad too repetitive. Also really gross class imbalance issues in PvP, mostly theives and mesmers annoy me to no end.

But yeah, in short, GW2 has ruined other mmorpgs. We will never have it as good as we have it here.

Yeah dodging in Tera is ruined by the rooted attacks.

Makes PVP both painfully dull and also unintentionally hilarious.

Pretty much this. The combat system in TERA is inferior to GW2 because of that one lil kitten-up on the part of their devs. They just stopped too soon.

I like the artwork better here though. TERA always felt kind of washed out for me on my system. Where as the scenery here is crisp and colorful.

Absolutely agree with OP except that I haven’ t been bored with GW2 enough to return to any of the obsolete and stale MMOs. In fact, I have uninstalled WoW, SWTOR, Tera and Aion. I look back now and realize I only put up with the nonsense in these MMOs because I lacked a choice.

I now have a permanent home with GW2 although that is not to say I don’t have some issues with ANet. For example, forcing us to group and do a dungeon just to complete our PERSONAL story is probably the worst experience I’ve had with GW2.

People are different I guess since I love that my character does not have a voice. The story and voice acting in TSW is amazing I have never ever listened through story and cut-scenes in any other game but I do at least once, sometimes several times in TSW. Having to run through killing everything to get from one map to another is not my favourite, either is the way they set up the auction house or crafting.

I think game’s like WoW offer things GW2 can’t, which is more “challenging” content/Raids and a Trinity system. Yes, believe it or not, some people like the Trinity system (as a past Healer, I’m not going to lie, I miss it a lot in PVP). So, in order to fulfill those needs that GW2 can not give, you have to take the good with the bad when playing Traditional MMOs.

Personally, I love the art style of GW2, the graphics, no competition for gathering, no competition for mob tagging, the fast gameplay and all of that. But I miss things from Traditional MMOs too, like Raids (not gear progression, but Raiding with 10 to 25 friends/guild), I miss the Trinity in group PVP fights (I loved it in Warhammer) and I miss the feeling of progression (but not necessarily gear progression).

Will I go back to a Traditional MMO? I tried. I played Rift for a bit, which is a very good MMO in my opinion. It had a lot of creative and fun ideas (such as their “Adventure” system) that GW2 could take a page out of. However, in the end, I couldn’t reach cap level because I didn’t want to stare at a quest log anymore past L50. I tried WoW again too at some point, I uninstalled it after 10 minutes of “wow, this is not what I remember” and “Oh my god, have these graphics always been this bad?”.

Then again, I always enjoyed The Secret World. The story and gameplay, in my opinion, blew Guild Wars 2’s out of the water. It was a dark, beautiful MMO. However it’s subscription ruined it for me, which is a shame. I prefer more “fantasy” type games anyways.

I played WoW for 7 years. I was also a GM for that time. Since the release of GW2, I’ve been shutting down the guild. Opening the guild bank to guildies to take what they want and people have slowly been finding other guilds.

They have until June 1 before final shutdown and everyone is removed from the guild and I cancel my sub.

I’m fully committed to GW2 being my new game and I’m thrilled to have no more grinding, no more raids, no more gear treadmills.

I wouldn’t go as far to say that GW2 revolutionized MMO’s, but I would rather say that GW2 is the Evolution of MMO’s.

Just look at ESO, it doesn’t take too much research into that game to figure out that many of the mechanics they have talked about are lessons learned from GW2 and they are improving upon them.

If that trend keeps up, and the next few MMO’s start coming out with features similar to GW2, then we will start to see less and less of the WoW clones.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least bit if WoW made a second game and made it vastly similar in terms of the mechanics of GW2. That’s why I believe GW2 is the evolution of MMO’s.

Coming from a ‘single player game’ perspective I almost fall out of my chair each time I hear that there are games that actually expect players to ‘compete’ for resource nodes! OMG! Really? (like I’m going to rush out and buy THAT… (NOT!) laughs uncontrollably…)

I would not of even considered installing GW2 had it not been for the many innovations and non-subscription nature of it. I’ve since installed PS2 and TSW as GW2 has fostered an idea that the MMO genera might be kinda fun after all.

Back on topic – at this point I could not imagine playing any of the ‘old school’ MMO’s and while some of the ‘yucky’ game play mechanics might be buried in reviews and user comments and there fore hard to find and make a purchasing decision on we all have GW2 to thank for pushing the industry in a positive direction.

Only thing GW2 did for me was introduce some ‘quality of life’ features like the inventory-collectible-send to bank system. That is IMO the biggest brilliance from GW2.

But outside that it is not as different from many other MMOs as some would like to believe or proclaim.
Quests are as static and MMO-standard as they are in other MMOs even if using the name dynamic events (besides Warhammer was first with such so hardly an innovation from GW2).
WvW was interesting and the main reason I’m here, but frankly – PlanetSide 2 gives a better experience for me as WvW only reminds me of what could have been and makes me recall DAoC with more fondness. SPvP is not my cup of tea, because I feel scenarios were better done in Warhammer. The esport aspect of them is also not to my liking.

GW2 has not ruined other MMOs for me at all. It’s just indicated some areas where other MMOs could learn from. It’s a solid game and I’ll continue to play some – but not exclusive as I have with other MMOs in the past.
In fact – GW2 is the first MMO I’ve played, where I did not play that exclusively.

Yes because GW2 is so very similar to Korean grind MMOs…

And you should probably read more than the title of the thread… for instance his post. The thread is not about which game is alive and kicking or which got killed by this or that new MMO. To sum it up, it’s about personal views of other MMOs compared to GW2, personal experiences.

Ruined refers to how one thing can ruin your feeling towards something else. Which GW2 has done, in a good way IMO. It really is a nice contrast to the other MMOs out there, something that shows how old and unoriginal most other MMOs are with their quests, trinity, raids, endless gear grinds (no ascended is not even close), more work than fun attitude and so on.

This is the first game since WoW that I have played for more than 2 months. I tried ToR after 7… or was it 8 years of WoW. I’d taken a few short breaks in between for a month here and there to test other MMOs, but they mostly lasted a month. One even only lasted a week before I ran out of content, and that was STO (Star Trek Online).

GW2 feels like the good old MMOs, with an atmosphere.

I’m also not a nub.

In the future(even though this guy generalized all wow players into nubs) don’t claim you are not something when nobody has stated that you are that. Makes people think you are in fact what you are claiming not to be.

“Guild wars 2 ruined all other mmo’s”

Mmm not really, the others mmo’s s im currenctly playing are alive and kicking!

May be you should tweak your title for : GW2 ruined all other grinder f2p Korean sauce mmo’s no-life oriented?

Perhaps you should actually read what the OP says, and not just the title. Cause what you just said has zero to do with what the OP is stating.

And for me the OP is right, I can’t even play any other MMO currently out because they just don’t compare to GW2, they are just not as good.

Actually, no OP.

It was refreshing to go back to WoW and have some great Dungeon runs. It was refreshing to know what quest rewards I was going to get before I did a quest. It was refreshing not to have to do Jumping puzzles (I know they aren’t mandatory, but certainly felt like it).

GW2 has some great features, but also some meh ones.

Cheers.

GW2 didnt kill any game…at all, if a game was ’’hurt’’ speaking about players jumping ship, was just WoW and GW1, and that is it.

No one is saying GW2 killed anything. We’re saying that for us, personally, it ruined the experiences of other MMOs. I can’t even fathom being in a static quest based world again where people fight to be the first to “tag” a mob to get credit for it or race each other to a node…

The biggest thing that stands out to me, aside from the best MMO combat out there, is the removal of the “screw your neighbor” from PvE. You work with each other, not against each other.

Interestingly enough, there was nothing about Warhammer having Public Quests till after Arenanet started to talk about it early in the development of GW2. After Arenanet started to talk about Dynamic events, some time later Warhammer developers mentioned having Public quests. Arenanet was talking about dynamic events back in April of 2007, Public Quests were not mentioned till August 2007.

You mean exactly how people rush to the mobs in events (notably the Orr ones) in order to get the credit…

“Screw your neighbour” rather depends on the game, some games were very good in this regard LOTRO for instance (before it was f2p), most people behved well and if you were fighting a mob by a node, would wait for you to finish to see if you actually going to farm the node ro not, rather then jumping in and farming the node whilst you were in combat, of course other games were not so good in this respect.

If anything this game’s poor design has reaffirmed my faith in other MMOs were the developers actually put forth honest effort. GW2 feels like nothing but a formless mass of ideas that didn’t pan out, everything tried an afterthought to the next “big idea” that got abandoned down the line.

An example of the poor design would be nice to hear.

IMO there are bugs, but thats the same with every single game. Sure there are a few balance issues, same there with every other game.

So some concrete examples would be great.

@Sylosi.6503: Everyone still has a great chance at getting credit. It’s not a first hit tag like every other MMO.

I just made it to Sunless this afternoon, he was already half way down when I started in on him.

I got full credit, gold event status and for the first time in 4 days, a rare from a dragon chest.

I don’t see anyone “rushing” to get credit on events, champs etc. and if they are, they are wasting their time.

What’s the rush? 15 min fight in Orr with a champ and the thing didn’t even drop a porous bone! Nothing, zero, zilch.

When there are so many people and the mobs are basically instgibbed, then yes pretty much it is first (or first two or three) that get the credit (in terms of loot bags dropping) which is why you see an overwhelming number of certain classes farming those events (warrior for instance) who are more suited to outputtign very high amounts of damage very quickly and repeatedly when compared to some other classes.

An example of the poor design would be nice to hear.

  • Hearts replacing quests ruins replayability
  • Personal story being devoid of meaningful choices despite being advertised otherwise
  • Events are buggy and non-functional months after release
  • Event bosses are mindless zergs
  • Lack of the Holy Trinity effectively killed complex boss design
  • sPVP is a complete joke, poorly balanced and completely abandoned
  • WvW is nothing but zergs, capture trading, and door smashing
  • Dungeons are a mess of bugs and erratic requirements, either too easy or full of fake difficulty
  • Loot DR implemented to force gem purchases upon the playerbase
  • Bots left to do their thing, ruining the economy
  • Servers list accounts tied to server, not actual populations to hide poor player retention
  • Legendary weapons not legendary, just a massive grind
  • Trahearne (THIS IS MY STORY LOL)
  • Zhaitan (SPAM 2 TO KILL THE ELDER DRAGON LOL)

Need I say more?

I wasn’t refering to getting credit in terms of a medal (my fault I shoudl of been clearer), which I agree is fine, I am talking about the events people farm for loot bags like the camp events, people rush to the mobs because the mobs (other than veterans) die instantly if there are lot players there, it is every man for himself as much as any other MMO.

No. That’s different… people trying to get in on an event are helping each other complete the event together. In lesser MMOs, you run to tag the mob so you and only you get credit for it.

“Screw your neighbour” rather depends on the game, some games were very good in this regard LOTRO for instance (before it was f2p), most people behaved well and if you were fighting a mob by a node, would wait for you to finish to see if you actually going to farm the node ro not, rather then jumping in and farming the node whilst you were in combat, of course other games were not so good in this respect.

Maybe there were those few that were better at it than others, but the mechanic remains regardless. Competitive PvE. It’s an outdated concept that I for one won’t miss.

The secret world, TSW, is a great game, and currently the only other online game that I play other than Guild wars two. Honestly I’m getting sick of the whole medieval fantasy setting, and the atmosphere in TSW is very refreshing well-crafted.

It has a great story and great writing, much better than that found in Guild wars two. The graphics are pretty good to especially if you’re into the best anti-aliasing.

The TSW developers are very close knit with the community and reveal a lot of details about upcoming changes and what not, unlike the developers in Guild wars two for some reason have to keep quiet and some seem paranoid about releasing details and getting punished by their boss for doing so.

TSW is really great and the community is great. Just look at the general forums for TSW and you can feel the love many players have for the game. I think there are many more mature players in that game versus in Guild wars two, where many kids just jumped on the bandwagon because they like jumping on the bandwagon of some popular game. TSW is more like a cult classic with very dedicated fans who are very attached to the game.

It is definitely a niche game, but if it fits your niche then you should definitely play it. What’s great is that the developers are proud to stick firmly to this niche and appease their core player base, without worrying about adding ascended gear and what not in order to expand their player base. They really focus on their story. They don’t water things down. They don’t make things “easy for everyone to understand”. It’s a game for people who love the game, not a game to grab as many players as possible.

But this is also the reason that the game wasn’t doing so well financially and had to go by to play. The sales once the spectacular because of this niche mindset of the developers. But I think it’s also paying off as time goes by because more people people are hearing about through word-of-mouth how great of a game TSW is.

For example when I browse the Guild wars two forms I’ll see some 100 replies to a post complaining about ascended gear and other post with 100 replies talking about how arena net sucks and the developers have strayed from their manifesto.

I see players on one extreme not satisfied with the endgame grind, and players at the other end of the spectrum not being satisfied with the play your way free to explore no grind implementation. When I see two opposing players such as this, it hints that the developers are trying to attract too big of a crowd for their game and can’t please everyone. Every game should hold true to its core player base.

There is a competitive and large enough of a videogame market nowadays that every gamer can find a game that caters most to their play style. Therefore to be competitive, a videogame should try to stick to a play style 01 player base and only expand their player base if the changes to the game doesn’t conflict with the original niche.

But look at what Guild wars two has done, although to a limited degree., I’m sure a lot of people rage quit after hearing about ascended gear and I’m sure some decided to give the game a try because of it. But since the game doesn’t do either grind nor no grind completely well., Both sides are not a 100% satisfied and always feeling like this isn’t the best game for them. Therefore they will jump ship when they see a game that does their play style better than Guild wars two.

One side of the player base feels partially abandoned and slightly betrayed, while the newly attracted player base feels only partially satisfied. And now we have developers who have to play teeter totter and try to balance for both types of players.

That means their work, the form posts, and their attitude is being tiresomely pulled left and right, back and forth, instead of just boldlessly charging in the direction that they love. Instead of making the game they love, they have to try to make the game that they think the players will love, and they end up performing a labor of service, rather than a labor of art.

It’s similar to comparing the movie directors. You have the movie directors whose first thing on their mind is how they can make a movie that garnish is the largest box office,. On the other hand you have the movie director who focuses on how he can make the movie that he is most passionate about and the end product that he can personally enjoy. Maybe it is more risky financially for the second type of movie director, but the love that he put into his work will really show through.

I think that after GW 2 , i wont be able to enjoy any traditional MMORPG any more.
They’re too grin-dish, and they’re map system usually sucks real bad.
They’re “click to attck” action is too bloody boring.

This game as a living map, how awesome is that?
People helping each other, not just ‘KSing’ .

It used to be kinda ok getting your gear. Now it’s a little harder…we’ll see how that goes.
