Anyone else foresee in the near future, the end of guild wars? I wouldn’t like to see the end but when shallow, uninteresting, unrewarding, frustrating game play take over, it’s time to leave the sinking ship I’m afraid. HoT is going have to bring some ground breaking ideas to the table if it’s to keep it’s head above water. A lot of loyal veteran GW players have left already (10 years since gw prophecies), Anet doesn’t seem to care about losing these people, soon they will have no loyal followers and just be left with new ‘latest thing’ players that will just move on after a while. I feel a real lack of care and understanding about what players want, issues that never get resolved, lack of communication, I’d like to see more devs responding on these discussion pages, instead of just letting us argue between ourselves….I did once raise a issue to Anet and was prompted to discuss on here, apparently they ‘read’ these….
I’ve been gaming since the day’s of Pong, I’ve seen many titles come and go, GW1 was a much better game imo, and they should look more at what made that game such a success in game play and longevity, GW2 has always seemed like a step backwards, I understand it was trying to go in a new direction, but it’s been 3 years now. issues are still unresolved, dull content, lack of care and understanding and thanks to july ‘dumbed down’ update even more unbalanced play. You can put all the flashy graphics, weapon skins and pointless TP items you like but if you don’t have the game play you have nothing and without a loyal fan base you will have nothing.
The July update killed it for me….unfortunately I had already pre ordered my HoT copy before the update was released which I never would of purchased….
Feels like I’m being forced to look elsewhere, sorry day indeed.

Don’t forget “Geargrinder 4711” will be release not to soon and that will finally
kill this game. And a month later we will also see “Age of Geargrind 42” that will
again kill it.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Everything you have said are extremely poor reasons to think that GW2 is doomed.

Would you like to see good reasons to think that GW2 is doomed?

  • The GW2 earnings have been falling since release through Living Worlds 1 and 2. Both, which were meant to take the place of expansions, have failed in giving the influx of money expansions bring.
  • Living Worlds 1 and 2 failed. Again, they didn’t keep the game interesting enough to raise earnings; and the experimental nature of both of them (you can see how the beginning of Living World 1 was different from its end, which was different from Living World 2) shows how ArenaNet was trying to find a model that worked for them, only to ultimatelly throw the concept away and go for an expansion. I laugh at people who think that buying HoT will give them access to future Living World content; it’s dead.
  • ArenaNet was focusing a lot at the China release, one year ago. The NPE was created after Chinese focus groups were having trouble with the beginning of the game, and they stopped making content for the West in order to prepare for the release over there. Yet, the China release tanked hard.
  • HoT is clearly being rushed (few maps, incomplete legendary sets, they’re still making massive changes to the well developed specializations, the bad developed specializations are awful). It’s hard to believe that they will make big, sustained profits once the expansion hits. Why do you think there has been this much secrecy?

One thing you can easily see from hints everywhere – forum titles for ArenaNet employees, Glass Door reviews, talks from ArenaNet people – is that they have a very poor management system. Wasn’t it said that it was only a small team working on the Living World? A few people assumed that meant the studio had been working on a “secret project” for years now, but the lull in content while we wait for HoT has shown the truth – ArenaNet has been mostly spinning on their wheels, mostly due to bad management. Unless they do a massive shake up, it seems very unlikely that they will be able to save GW2.

First we’ll see what happens when SOON™ arrives…

I hope it is everything and more. 8 man dungeon paths, small raids and 4 big maps with 3 layers (making it 12 seperate area’s) or maybe just underground and air for the whole GW2, or something comparably impresive… (honestly doubt so)

They registered HoT and the Hypetrain set of, with increasing speed and more and more wagons, problem was , however impressive some things sound now when they release stuff, the feeling HoT is on a sidetrack, rusting away, is growing on me… I do not really mind a wait, but in 2 days GW2 is 3 years old and I expected the HoT to launch coming Tuesday, maybe 2 or 3 weeks later…
I really expected us to be playing SOON. You know and I know this will not happen….

It will be “SOON™”, Yeah right….

Before the year ends… yes… But I really really hope for Gw2 it will be before my Birthday (start of October….) Else my interest is gone, it is gone now, but I am still wondering, but this feeling is fading fast. I’ve been defending the better Quality then Quantity but at this moment I prefer something above nothing.

I have been waiting for warrior specs to be rebealed, and was hoping it would be condition related and guess what. I couldn’t be more bored seeing it…. It’s too little WAAAYY too late…

Yes I bought the Expansion, the Deluxe Edition (2 months ago)but the gems are gone, the slots are being filled with lvl 80’s and I couldn’t care less at this point…

  1. Been in the 1st stress test, was hyped
  2. Missed the portal was a bit hyped
  3. Did the WvW stress test was not so interested anymore
  4. Did the BW and acouldn’t be interested anymore, made 2 characters played the 1st story and an a circle through the map and left again. Been before in 33%, other 66% was bugged.
  5. Waiting now for second BWE. Really wondering…
  • Why should I be hyped?
  • Should I hope for a view of the 3 layers?
  • Or more area of the Verdant Brink?
  • To play Warrior? I played condition warrior for 3 years now. Yes, torch nice… I crafted one for my warrior.

So:
Just farming some Dragonite now for a condition set for my revenant if I ever get to make one. Already have an armor already have a trinket set. Just need another mace and axe.

And I’m just wondering for a Date. It will be October. 3 more proffesions… Druid, Assassin and what? Tinkerer? Amaze me… or at least try…

23 lvl 80’s, 9 times map, 4ele, 4ncr, 3war, 3grd, 3rgr, 2thf, 2msm, 1eng, 1 rev.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

I really liked that conspiracy theory, “they are totally working on something big, therefore ls2 is garbage” ! Only a few people probably thought that Anet was simply just cheap and tried to keep costs low for it while reaping in massive profit.^^

It is hard to predict when games will die. A virtual world I use has had many points where people declared it would be the end, it even became a running joke whenever they changed one policy or another. The latest is the company is working on another product right now.

That is second life. They had their beta in what, 2003? I highly doubt GW2 is going anywhere soon.

Hi guys.

I’ve recently gotten back into playing GW2 but (I know this is slightly off topic) I’d say unless they make gems go further by either increasing the amount of gems that you get for you money or making in-game content cheaper, oh and give you more gold for your gems (better conversion rate) then their profits are going to continue falling because right now anyone that’s willing to risk buying gold out of the game can get 1000g for about £40. Now £40 in gems (in-game) will only get you 500g.

If they offered around 900 – 950 gold for £40 worth of gems then people would be more likely to purchase gems in-game and not take the risk of using a RMT.

If you got more for your money with in-game purchases overall then people would DEFINITELY see the value in spending their hard-earned money.

As an example, Smite is a free-to-play game and they even offer better value for money on in-game content. That’s lead me to spend around £300 – £400 on Smite in the last few months (yea yea call me stupid but I enjoy it and gaming is a hobby just like any other).

I could easily spend that sort of money on GW2 but not with the current value for money. In it’s current state compared to other games it just seems greedy and they’re only putting people off of spending money with them.

Oh and don’t get me started on the Golem Bank…..how many gems?! Oh and it’s only a temporary thing not even permanent?! Yea….it has greed written all over it.

If they gave you more, reduced prices of in-game content and bumped up to gem to gold conversion rates then they would wipe out gold sellers and increase their profits overall. This would mean they could employ more staff, release more regular in-game content and push the boundaries. These guys could be bigger than Blizzard if they changed how they do things.

Already ANet has quite possibly the best customer service that I’ve EVER experienced. This is where most other developers fall down.

Anyway, rant over :P

GW2 launched and the only new game of substance to launch was WildStar which also falls under the ownership of NCSoft.

There wasn’t another major MMO release after this game to pull the hipster crowd away and thus it is true they remain in this game. Might have tried to go back to the core MMO WoW but WoD was awful so they probably returned.

With the current state of the community and dev non interraction it is true this game won’t survive a new and upcoming MMO. The only new MMO to stand up to this phenomenon was FF14 even GW2 saw such loses due to the launch of a WoW expac that we ended up merging worlds which still hasn’t solved the problem with small world WvW being empty.

We have new MMO’s coming now apparently and we have a new WoW expac that seeks to redeem itself the thing about WoW expacs is that they reshap the MMO map. Millions of people go back to WoW for an expac and then they shed those Millions of people after a month or so and those people don’t always return to the same MMO. The best MMO get talked up on WoW when people start leaving and those Millions of people may flood another MMO which seemed to be FF14 after WoD.

The Gw1 vets are leaving and Anet goes on about E-sports and it’s hipster crowd even if a new MMO launches and bombs it would be devastating for this game as they may get talked into trying another MMO or staying with that new game.

I laugh, literally laugh every time I see a thread like this. I think the OP needs to look up doomed in the dictionary. It doesn’t mean what he think it means.

As for people saying the game isn’t making money, I’d say 7 million a month is up there in the MMO arena. I think people who think this game isn’t making money haven’t been following the reports. And that 7 million a month doesn’t include China. Those figures can be found under royalties in the profit statement.

Games going downhill all follow siimilar patterns. At some point, there are layoffs. Where are they? Oh, wait, Anet is still hiring. Pretty odd for a doomed game.

The idea this game is doomed or done for isn’t just absurd, it’s laughable. I hope the OP has the class to come back in a few years time to admit that he got it wrong.

This game is not dying and wont be any time soon. If anything it is only just beginning to take off imo. This game as well as the genre is going through a transformation atm and this game is one of the ones at the fore front of that. Yes gone may be the days of gear grinds, expensive subs and spending massive amounts of time in these types of goals to achieve very little in the long run (if you truly look at how those games used to work and what you got for all the effort put in).

Sure the game might be aimed more at “casual” players or so some say. I like to think it aims for all players and is more like wanting casual play. Yet at the same time you still CAN spend lots of time here doing things. But the way it’s designed is to be more fun rather than grind or “you must do this first before you can get to the fun stuff”. Is this really a bad thing?

If you have run out of things to do try a different game for a bit or do something totally different for a while. I really don’t know why people seem to act like they can’t function, live life or whatever because this game or any other can’t fill that “babysitter” role. Not to mention that the game is dying because of this.

I hope I didn’t sound rude there, I didn’t mean too. :P

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Whether reasons are poor or not depends on the person. Your personal reasons are valid to you, but it isn’t a reflection of the whole. You don’t like gw2 and that’s fine, but it doesn’t mean its “doomed”.

So no i don’t think gw2 is doomed. Some people will like it, some don’t, personal opinions however don’t really make up for good arguments as to whether a game is dieing, most of the times there are facts to back such statements up (ex. like vayne mentioned: lay offs)

And all of you who are disappointed or whatever in the game always have a choice, stay and play or leave to another. And your leaving will not have an impact on the game whatsoever. MMO’s have high turnover rate, 1 leaves 3 more start to play etc. Have fun wherever you decide to go. GAME ON

I play GW2 for WvW. Been playing nearly 3 years now. ANet’s efforts to improve on this part of GW2 in 3 years have been mostly lamentable. It’s still stupidly popular, and I still love it…tho I sure do hate it sometimes. Give me the name of a viable alternative. Is it free to play? Is it pay to win?

A whole lot rests on HoT. If ANet gets it wrong, it will be the beginning of the end for GW2. If the new borderlands encourage EB style play, it’ll probably break the game for me. But if they get it right. Even a bit right. Coz they got it mostly wrong up till now as far as WvW goes. It might well give this particular part of the game just the shot in the arm it sorely needs to keep us all playing.

ANet…don’t kitten it up! Us WvW types are a dedicated bunch, but we still have finite patience. No more encouragement needed to blob and attack. Concentrate your efforts on making defending more profitable and pleasureable and you’ll get 3 more years out of me.

ArenaNet has been mostly spinning on their wheels, mostly due to bad management. Unless they do a massive shake up, it seems very unlikely that they will be able to save GW2.

Wait a few months and you’ll be able to buy it at a discount, as soon as the bad reviews start pouring in.

Save your money. This isn’t going anywhere but down.

Even if ArenaNet weren’t famous for overpromising and underdelivering, that’s obviously marketing speech. Whatever those “big announcements” are, if you really expect anything good at all you will be massively disappointed.

ArenaNet is this community’s worst enemy.

And it wouldn’t be the first or the last time ArenaNet makes a promise they are not going to keep.

And so on for… 14 pages? You seem like a well balanced, reliable person. Someone without a chip on your shoulder, someone who people could rely on for informative and fair analysis.

Doomed? As in servers being shut down? Nah, at least not in the near future. They won’t get rid of a money making product.

Thing about GW2 is you can always get back into it whenever you feel like it, take breaks away from it and play as casually as you like with no repercussion, so this game will have its player base for quite some time.

What we will see is a decline of the user base as a whole but that’s just the normal progression of any MMO really. The latter, however, does contribute to them being more focused on designing stuff that can be sold for gems rather than free content – new maps, dungeons or whatever – they have to cut losses somewhere.

GW2 has its issues…but so has every other MMO. The question is will it survive the investors crying at one end to bleed more money out of the player base while cutting back on staff and services, or will they let the game developers focus on keeping the player base with good content.

Developers don’t always have the final say and more often than not its the ones that have no understanding of MMO’s at all that have the final say. Wall Street has a winning streak for killing off good games

Well, we got HoT coming so thats at least a couple of months of fun. After that, we probably got a winter event coming up. After that… I am guessing SAB. Seriously, how long are they going to sit on that? Or at least, hoping. This alone will hold us until next summer. If they start making new WvW seasons that would be nice.

The only foreseeable threat in the near future I know of is Black Desert Online but even then… Asian MMO are so different they usually dont draw the same crowd. All the other great games still loom in the shadows and are probably a year away.

The GW2 earnings have been falling since release through Living Worlds 1 and 2. Both, which were meant to take the place of expansions, have failed in giving the influx of money expansions bring.

Eh? GW2 earnings has been pretty stable for 2 years… And the year before that is was no surprise that it was higher, since it was release year. Compare with games like Wildstar that tanked within months, lol.

Guild Wars 2: Interview with Colin Johanson
“Guild Wars 2 has been a monumental next step for us as a studio from the original Guild Wars. Really, it’s surpassed nearly all of our expectations and it has allowed us to grow our studio extensively as well. There’s really no better barometer for a game franchise’s success than to be able to say that we’ve continued to grow the talent around it and the resources that are being put into it. When I started working on the Guild Wars franchise we had around 50 folks, we’re up near 300 now and continuing to grow due to the success of Guild Wars 2.

You only get to grow like that when your game is extremely healthy – which is a long way of saying: I’m very happy with the state of Guild Wars 2 today, and knowing it’s only going to get better with Heart of Thorns is very exciting to think about for our future.

(Snip)

So why more challenging content now? Simply put – it’s what our players have been asking for – and we agree with them that it will make Guild Wars 2 a deeper and more compelling game experience. We don’t have issues retaining players, and we think providing more content they are excited about will only be better for us in the long run."

By the way, WoW is dying too. I read it in a thread on their forum.

Be careful what you ask for

Sadly it’s a fact of the gamer world, mostly with MMORPG players, that if they as an individual lose interest in something it means that the game is dying or that it is doomed. People say that about every single game ever. Always. All the time. Why? Because they think it’s all about them and they for some reason want to make a statement about it publicly. The generation of armchair bloggers who actually do nothing to help the “problem” they see that have grown up in this digital age we live in is actually quite disheartening.

It’s fine if you lose interest in something, that’s perfectly normal and you’re allowed to not like something if it simply doesn’t meet -your- tastes, but that doesn’t mean everyone shares your interests or preferences. I mean we’re all gamers, nerds, here. That immediately solidifies the fact that we don’t share the same interests as people whom play sports, go clubbing, race cars, act. Can those interests sometimes mesh? Sure, but not always.

So yeah, you’re going to have different preferences than other people, that doesn’t mean yours are the only ones in existence and should be taken as fact for everyone.

The game isn’t doomed, it’s not dying just like WoW isn’t dying, just like Everquest 1 hasn’t even shut down yet, just like many other games are still alive and kicking. GW2 will still be going strong for years in case you want to come back, and even if you want to come back 2-3 years from now, hey, you won’t need to try and get your gear score up to par.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Even some of the hardcore games are getting Care Bear Games lately. Just ask the CFC or Russian Federation how much fun defending is with the new SOV mechanic in Eve.^^

Hail the MMORPG Cycle! All shall be revealed in time, and with the revelation comes the end! Yes, the end! Heed the Cycle! Beware the unseen statistics! Casuals, prepare to meet your makers! Heed the Cycle well! The end is near! The Cycle is truth, and the truth shall set us free! Repent! The end is nigh! Follow Colin! Though he is doomed, his is the only way to salvation! So saith the Prophecy! Fall down to your knees and beg Arenanet to spare their wayward players! Trust not the treacherous subscription model, we have been warned! Prepare for the coming of those whose departure caused Arenanet to weep! The time has come to atone for our arrogance! The MMORPG Cycle will be fulfilled. Make peace with Arenanet before it’s too late!

Well, to be fair, many WvW servers are pretty dead. I mean, they are literally mislabeled as medium, then when you go into the maps its all just wastelands.

A-Net did drop the ball on WvW and veteran customer retention and the kicker is, that biggest source of new players is “word of mouth” from those veteran customers, who are instead not just not putting out a good word for this game, but also quite the opposite.

So while the game will not die, it sure as hell can become something that just wont feel as an MMORP anymore, missing the Massive Multiplayer component.

Yea, sure, EQ, and few others are still around, but I sure as hell don’t need to log into them anymore and forget about geting any money out of me either, i might and thats an unlikely might, log into an older game on some re-introductory offer or something like that. On top of that, there are greener pastures on the horizon that I will be trying out.

As unhappy as I am with Guild Wars 2 right now, death is not coming for the game anytime soon.

Gone to Reddit.

That deserved a picture of Colin holding the Scepter of Orr :|, he in place of Vizier Khilbron.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

Never really played GW1. I just like Glint a lot and should’ve known the prophecy far better.

On a related note nah GW2 is pretty chilly beans. Content drought is all with HoT coming along. I only really hear the hatred at the forums but in game no one really seems to care too much beyond really minor things.

And, off topic, and, it’s not my thing, and… but lol. Just lol:

Test.8734:

That kind of empty hyperbole is below you.

Followed by:

Destiny is one of the worst games released this century so far.

But it’s true! $500 million budget – $10 million on the game and $490 million to Eurogamer to run near-daily articles about this overhyped, DLC-laden, empty, grindy, generic shooter of a game!
