A guildie claims to have gotten one from four whites, and I outright called BS but he insistent for months now and others within the guild have corroborated the story. This is the first time I ever hear anyone getting that. An official Anet response would be cool? Ofc, if it is possible the chances must be astronomically small and not at all worth it but I would still like some clarification on this.

Impossible. Mystic forge will only upgrade items to the next rarity tier so in order to get precursors you’d need to use rares and exotics.

Nope. At best it upgrades by one tier. It’s certainly not going to jump from white to Legendary. He is pulling your leg.

Consider there are only two possibilities:

• They are pulling your leg and you getting worked up over it fills them with glee.

• It actually happened and you getting worked up over it is really, really insulting.

There is no version of events where getting worked up over it is a good play. Nod your head, smile, and move on. Because if it did happen, that’s awesome for them but it’s not going to happen for you before the heat death of the universe, so why worry about it?

Sorry but your friend is lying… The mystic forge doesn’t work like that.

It would be impossible to get even a masterwork item out of 4 whites let alone an exotic.

He was a pretty new player and I think maybe he got one as a drop and didn’t notice it believing that he got it from the forge. He defacto got one, and no way he had the money to buy one as new as he was. This is the most likely explanation.

Or, a once-in-a-lifetime glitch happened. No matter the source, I’m sure the Guildie was thrilled! =)

Did he actually SHOW the legendary when he made it?

Did said Guildie make a Legendary? Maybe he/she just kept the Precursor for later use, or sold it….

When I saw the title I thought he got it from ambient creatures… But no, it should be impossible to get a Precursor from 4 white items in the Mystic Forge.

I got my precursor from rats in WvW :p

Yeah, it’s not possible. Your guildie is lying, and the guildies who back up his story are either also lying or very gullible.

He probably got it the normal way, and just pulling every ones leg by saying it was all whites.

“In addition, the output equipment will be 3-12 levels higher than the average of the levels of the four piece of input equipment, except for exotic weapons averaging L75 or better, in which case there is a chance of ending up with L70-79 weapons. There is also a roughly 20% chance of receiving a higher quality item.”

If he still does not see reason mention that this seems to have been a bug that should get fixed and you’d write a ticket to anet support so they can remove his precursor due to bug abuse.

You guys are mistaken. It’s been a known bug for quite a while that you can go up more than 1 tier in rarity by using the mystic forge. I’ve been putting in buy orders for green weapons since mystic forging them into rares is a profit. About every 100-200 forges, you’ll get an exotic weapon from 4 green weapons. It’s about a 1% chance, but it’s not impossible.

Since the bug lets you jump from green to exotic, I wouldn’t be that surprised if it also allowed you to jump from white to exotic. I’d assume the chances of that happening, based on my observed green to exotic ratio, would be approximately .0001% (or one in one million combines).

Because putting something into the forge is the daily that day, and you’ve got nothing you’re working on there.

I don’t care about legendaries, so I ignore the forge. Except when its a daily. When its a daily the first 4 things of the same time in my inventory go in there. Its the fastest daily on the list most of the time.

No, I’ve never seen going from green to exotic. I forge a lot more than 200 forges/week and I’ve never ever seen this. Not once.

This happened to me 2 times , using rare gear received as leveling rewards.

You can even get lv 42 rares out of 4 lv 14 greens. I used to do this long ago until even lv 14 greens got too expensive to buy off the TP, so it may be possible.

That is a completely different and expected situation. The mystic forge doesn’t guarantee a mere +4-12 levels as output — it attempts to find something in its drop table that is within that range. But for some items, particularly trinkets, there aren’t that many options.

After you (Yumiko Ishida) last tried it, the drop tables were expanded to extend to extra levels. Now, however, Zommy handles it by dishing out karma items, mostly things you can get from vendors (plus a few that were removed from the game for one reason or another). Thus, there are only a tiny number of situations where you can get a huge item level jump.

Regardless, what the Mystic Forge never does is jump item rarity, and especially not from masterwork to precursor.

Maybe he skinned a precursor over a white weapon……
