I feel like every guild I’ve ever joined was too quiet. I’ve been to a few servers and in multiple guilds and I’m wondering if I’m the only one that feels this way or not. I’ve been in guilds where they always had over 50 people online and repping at any given time….but nobody says anything in guild chat for hours. I’ve tried several times to get conversations started, but it just never lasts more than a minute or I get totally ignored. I always try to be nice to everyone and I always sign up for guild forums. I just can’t seem to find an active guild that has an active social setting.

I’m a bit too shy to talk much in teamspeak/vent/skype and even when I do, it’s normally pretty quiet there too. Perhaps I’m taking the approach to guilds wrong.

Question 1:

Anybody else have troubles finding a guild that actually uses their guild chat?

Question 2:

What do you believe guilds are for? Socializing/questing together/ect?

I repped a wvw focused guild 90% of the time. And every time I’m on TS, I just hear guild mates swearing and cracking up jokes. It’s all fun and never boring, especially on primetime.

Perhaps you guys speak different languages?

Do you guys shares the same interest in the game, maybe you’re in a PVX guild? A primarily pve player talking about dungeons will not get a response from a wvw-focused player who may not know a lot about it.

I’ve been in too many guilds to count. While some have silly chatter or someone complaining over guild chat some of the time, almost all have had hours and hours with silence and the only people that weren’t ignored were the “core” people. I believe guilds are for socializing… but it seems I’m one of the few who thinks so.

I’m only here because sometimes I just like to watch things burn.

I generally join PvX guilds since I dabble in just about everything in-game. Maybe it’s time I find a WvW guild and a seperate PvE instead of a PvX guild. Thanks for the response!

i’m the founder of a casual guild with many members from my country.

Question 1:

the guild chat can be quiet at times when everyone is doing their own things but when some talkative members are online it can be quite lively.

there are both quiet hours and lively hours for the guild chat each day.

Question 2:
What do you believe guilds are for? Socializing/questing together/ect?
- socializing
- making friends
- dungeon runs
- guild missions
- wvw
- spvp
- casual get together
- etc

Most definitely not the only one that thinks so! I believe they’re suppose to be a place where people can get together and enjoy a good game, help each other when needed, and forge some strong bonds. Too often I’ve been in guilds where you get ignored. It’s kind of nice to know I’m not the only one out there that’s seen it. I don’t believe it’s the fault of the game’s guild system. I think it has to do with how players interact with each other here. I thought guild missions would help bring people together, but it’s like you have 20 minutes of burst activity and then it goes back to being dead quiet all day.

no you are not the only person expereincing this. Its to the blame of the lack of role in the guild system. the game has no dedicated large scale PvE for guilds or any PvE that requires cordination and communication. so players dont need to speak in guild chat. for this, many people place guild chat in a sperate channel until needed. so people doing this wont view chatter when they play unless entering guild chat channel.

Ever tried chatting to anyone in party or guild while actually playing the game? you can manage a couple of sentences at best.

Because of this, I have a theory that the quieter the guild chat, the more players are actually playing the game. The busier, the more of them are messing around in LA

Guild chat is relatively busy at certain times of day with certain people on in my guild. At other times of day (late night mostly) it’s relatively dead.

Of course, at those times, there is still sometimes chatter going on in mumble.

For a game like Guild Wars 2, which is more dynamic, I find voice chat much easier than typing.

It’s hard to type while in a WvW zerg or in the middle of a dynamic event in Orr, or in the middle of a Scarlet invasion or even in the middle of something like the Clocktower jumping puzzle.

Guild chats will suffer. Voice chat is one answer.

I don’t know why so many people resist this.

Teamspeak is where we chat, mostly. It will fall quiet during RP, but at other times it can get quite lively.

When I first started gaming, guild chat was the main point of contact and socialising, but as chat programmes became more reliable, they have taken over from guild chat.

That doesn’t mean to say that guild chat it always dead, it isn’t. But I think another issue is that few people use just a guild chat tab, they are mostly in the main tab, which can get spammed away quickly.

I know that some of of our members are shy of using English when it’s their second or third language (I know I would be very shy of attempting another language). We have had members who say that TS has improved their English greatly, though.

Joined several guilds until I found a good one. In the first months we were quite active, doing dungeons with guild people, teaching tactics to newbies and so on.

Lately, after the lfg tool was introduced the guild almost died. Is hard to find people who is looking for groups in guild chat and the only times when I feel it like a guild is when we do guild missions.

I’m not sure why people resist VC either. But it does beg the question as to the adequacy of the in game chat system if people need to resort to using a third party program just to chat to guildies when playing the game.

For content, sure VC is superior. But it also has issues such as not protecting people ‘s privacy as much as text chat (for example some women are loathe to use VC due to being hit on, people’s behavior changing, not being taken seriously as players etc).

There’s also chat segregation issues to consider. While i’m in a dungeon I just want to focus on what i’m doing, not listen to guildies chatting about this and that. With text chat I can just scroll up and see what’s been going on.

Not being able to chat in party or guild is a symptom of the combat system, which is why i’m convinced a quiet guild chat means more active players, not necessarily less active ones

It’s up to us, the players to realize this and adjust our expectations

We have voice chat with different channels. People running dungeons tend to move to one of the channels reserved for that. And we have plenty of women in the guild, most of whom use mumble.

As for it not being in the game, adding it to the game is an extra budget of time. Because solutions existed that were as good as or better than anything Anet would have come up with, it was decided not to do it…at least this is what Anet said, and I agree with them.

They have voice chat in DDO for parties too…but my guild there ignored it and used vent.

As a female, I can understand other’s reluctance. But I am not the only female in the guild and the numbers of female gamers continues to grow. But men can be just as shy, too

We are happy for players to just listen, the vital thing is to be able to hear advice and instructions for dungeons. It’s usually not long before they are joining in the chat too.

Didn’t say VC needed to be added to the game, and you’ll notice I said some not all players . If someone in my guild doesn’t want to use VC because they want to protect their identity/gender that’s fine I’m not going to make them feel uncomfortable. We’ll make do.

Separate channels aren’t really the answer. They split you off from the main ebb and flow of guild chatter while you are in them. But anyway..

My point is, the combat system doesn’t lend itself to chatting in party or in guild. Which I consider to be one of the significant factors in why people see a quiet guild chat. Ofc reasons like people having to work, families etc account for an ebb and flow too just that the above is an additional reason people might not immediately think of

Guilds are massively important, BUT in GW2, unless you’re in a really big busy guild, the GW2 guild system doesn’t work, people are stuck on different servers and theres no way for Euro and US guildies to play together

This game doesnt always allow for much typing chatter. Other MMO’s, in a trinity type role, I’ve found it easy to type and chat. From either being rooted or not having any reason to move at bosses and only having to hit skill buttons.
My guild has its peak busy times and its slow times, as any would through the day. During the slow times, I’ve seen questions go unanswered for a long time in Guild chat. Why haven’t I answered? Because taking the time to do so would in all likelihood result in my death. Because I’m in a spot where I need to keep moving and dodging.
Yes, I will answer in chat when I have a breather and chance to do, if someone else hasn’t by then. Dead guild chats doesn’t always mean the guild is dead or purposely ignoring anyone or that noone wants to chat. It could also mean the guild is busy and people are unable to type out a conversation.
I believe this is why many guilds try to get people on voice chats of some kind, seemingly moreso than in other MMO’s, due to the nature of the game.

Also people can’t see the guild chats of guilds they are currently not repping thus making the quiet guild chat issue even more apparent. The multi-guild system should be a great boon, but in effect it’s like leaving one guild and joining another at will and as such is mostly useless.

You’d be surprised how much more active a guild can get with guild halls.

A place where you can hang out with friends that is exclusive to your guild. A place where you can actually do normal Quality of Life functions like sell items and craft.

A simple instance can add a LOT to the game.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”

Totally agree
In GW1 sometimes my guild would just hang out in the guild hall while we chatted on Vent

This is a real shame.

I know some people from NA, but I can’t play with them, how come Anet?
How come?
