Face it. People want BiS. Required or not is irrelevant. It is grindy.

And I have every intent to keep swinging my sword again.

And merely just wanting something is not a reason of why you should have it.

Then grinding is a reason why I should have it?

According to the game, yes.

If you disagree, then feel free to state why else you would deserve something other than “i want it”

Which supports my statement that it is grindy. Thank you!

Sorry guys. but Grindy—- no.. not compaired to a lot of mmo out there.

Try harvesting ore and gaining the skills to fly a Super Carrier NyX in EvE – or grind fraction in WoW version 1 (max lvl 60 back then).
You are working on a skin… that from creation was set to highest vanity item in game. Its not needed. It does not even come with any special abilities other than change of stats and a night/day indicator on one item.-

Hours used in game for it? rather low compared to most items players in other games grind for.- the only thing that ofsets it is the RNG of the precurser… but you can just grind money and buy that.— its not a “bind on pickup” with 0.004% drop rate…. Ive been there.

You need full ascended in order to be competitive in this game. It is a horrible, expensive grind. Just wait until you see legendary armor!

If you suck, yeah.

Course even then you’ll still suck and get walked right over. You’ll just be slightly fancier loot bag.

It may be the least grindy mmorpg, go try other mmorpgs(especially f2p ones) and you will see.
Gw2 is the most casual/easy mmorpg I have ever played. Instead, I want to see more hardcore grindy stuff in this game.

No, thanks.

I’ve been playing a lot of JRPG style games and old school CRPGs, made some fan fiction here and there, and made some games myself. I don’t mind grinding, as long as the grind feels rewarding (ie. makes you feel powerful bit by bit, makes you feel you earn some good loot, etc.). This is why I don’t like the changes they made with the trait system, or rather, how the trait points are distributed along the leveling up process. Also I wish they made some quests for getting legendaries, to add flavor and some backstory to them like some suggested. Not less easier to get as the current system of getting legendaries, but not as tedious and boring as right now.

all mmo are a grind, but it depends how and why you are grinding/farming..
every time i see a legendary i just say to myself, so what.. sometimes i wish there was more grind in this game, and by that i mean more depth filled content.. or goals to seek out that had some particular meaning.. this game is so pointless at times that they are now marrying their two shortcomings, legendaries and pvp tournaments..

No, calling GW2 the most grindy game ever is a gross exaggeration. It doesn’t even come close to the grind levels of some of the more infamous titles (even though at moments it does try). The problem lies elsewhere. It’s not that the grind is so big (though it is big). It’s that it is everpresent, trying to get into every facet of the game. Also, it doesn’t start at the beginning (though as i see Anet tries to change that), so it may come as a surprise when you finally get hit with it. And it’s a game targeted mostly to casuals, not to hardcore farmers, so of course that grind is noticeable here – it’s not something people bought this game for.

Actions, not words.

Ah, I see you have played grind hells, as well. I feel your pain…..been there done that.

This game’s “grind” is a breeze compared to those mmos.

This game’s grind at the upper levels is completely optional, and not needed, unless you’re a min/maxer……and even then it is far less compared to other mmos upper level grinds for the best gear/stats, imo.

I’d take WoW’s grind over this any day.

At least in that game, there is an actual sense of progression and reward; when you finally get a drop from a boss that your guild has been struggling with, you feel like you earned it. In GW2, I just farm content until I finally have enough gold to buy whatever I want and grab it from the TP. The thrill, the rush…

I made a good run, but I feel like after a year and a half of grinding, I made virtually no progress towards my end goal.
In fact, my end goal was probably a good 2 or 3 years away to be realistic.
So yes! I feel the same way about the grind in GW2! Completely optional, and even if you take it upon yourself to do it, it is nowhere near a true “grind”. :P

Stop saying “no offense meant” when that’s exactly what you’re trying to accomplish.

Regardless, the whole premise of GW2 was that it would be a different kind of MMO with a cosmetic end-game where you could enjoy the content that you actually want to play without fear of a gear treadmill. Not to mention that ANet “doesn’t make grindy games”.

Obviously, the game hasn’t stood up to its core principles since release. ANet has a tendency to tease players with a carrot-on-a-stick and I’ve learned to take anything that Colin says with a grain of salt.

Wow, do I ever agree with you on EvE. Eve is a very cool and very different beast when it comes to mmos, but the grind is just phenomenally absurd. I have quit and resubbed to it several times…..and I always end up saying the same thing to myself about the grind….“are you completely nuts???!!!”……….lol……I would have to give my life over to the game to get to any of the upper levels.

The game is grindy if you want legendaries or even ascended gear. Other aspects are less grindy. If you don’t mind average gear, even above average gear, then it’s not grindy but there’s no real gear progression and the loot is pretty pathetic, so yeah, grindy if you care about those things. I tire of the pathetic loot.

The grind in this game is across all game-modes. They’ve finally introduced gold sinks into sPvP, and it’s ridiculous how much gold it takes to fully gear out one character for WvW or dungeon runs… And that’s for one build.

My brother just got his first level 80 on Easter weekend and I was blown away with how long it took and how expensive it was to gear his character out; the megaserver changes made getting Temple gear super obnoxious and the rune and sigil updates resulted in a price hike in anything remotely desirable.

The fact that I spend almost all of my time in this game in WvW and sPvP is completely irrelevant, but feel free to continue the witch hunt.

If you are struggling too much for Twilight, my tip is:
1- Open Google.com, Image search
2- Type “universe”
3- pre-set the research for HD results
4- pick up the best and most pleasant picture you see of a red supernova or something like that
5- stare at this beautiful image of our universe, for a long while.
6- Get back to the game and spend your time crafting something that, actually, has some art design work developed by Anet, like, so many other weapons.
BONUS: Optionally, you can also jut sit in Gendarran Fields and stare at the multitude of Twilights, probably the most common and overrated legendary in the game. Same goes for Eternity and Sunrise.

Seriously man, these legendaries are so OOOVER and common, don’t even bother…..

It’s so far off from the most grindy MMOI don’t even know how to respond to this. You may not enjoy the game, but using “most grindy” to describe it is a master stroke of disingenuous hyperbole.

GW2 tries to appeal to every type of MMO player and one type wants to always have something to aim for and gets bored if they max out their gear too soon. So they put in Legendary weapons and made getting them a grindfest to give that section of the market what they want. But Legendary weps are no stronger than ascended so no one is being forced into grinding for them.

I personally have no interest in getting a Legendary wep. If you do its prolly because your a person who feels compelled to chase after every goal put in front of you. Which means when you run out of goals to chase you will be bored with the game. So having it take a while to get Legendaries helps to maintain your interest in the game.

The Goderators have ruined this forum for me.

Legendaries were intended to be a long term, grindy goal. There’s really no point in complaining about it.

Since you went there, I see it in a different light. We’re all what I call paid-in-full customers and BiS is part of the content in my book. BiS does not have to mean legendary. I could be convinced that it does include it but that’s neither here nor there for this conversation. The answer to your question is that I’m a paid in full customer – that’s why I deserve it. And to keep that from ruffling too many feathers, that is my opinion.

I also think things like applied fortitude/strength should be given to those new to WvW. Training wheels if you will. And that those with lots of WvW ranks shouldn’t have it. Please don’t take that in the wrong light. I have enough free rank points to purchase both of those goodies and I’ve elected not to do so. Who knows, I may spend them at some point. The main point here is that I still have a blast in WvW. And, I really don’t see why people care so much about others NOT having BiS. What truly gets me is how negative most of said posts seem.

The funny part about the responses to my posts: my first post was a compliment to the game. “It is by far the most grindy game I’ve every played for any length of time.” See what I did there?

My second post. People would use BiS if they had it and it’s irrelevant to bring up need. Anyone who is going to play for some time will run into the grind wall that is BiS. It doesn’t need to be there or at least not so high. And here comes the compliment again: I’m going to keep swinging my sword!

At this point I do have a legendary weapon that I crafted. Yes, it was a grind. I’ve almost repeated said grind. And before I do so the third time, I’ll have enough extra gold to flat out buy another from the TP.

It is grindy. And I’m going to go swing my sword again!

personally I think most of the grind is done during leveling, as it takes much longer here then it did in GW1. For GW2 grinding is more optional. If you want shinies then yea it might be a grind if your rng sucks but again its not a must. You can easily earn gold and gear up a toon, sure it wont look as great at first, but you dont have to actually do that much grind to improve.

I say what needs to be said, get used to it.

Honestly OP, do you hear yourself when you write down something like the title of this thread?

I have over 1000 hours in this game, and it NEVER. EVER. felt grindy. What do you want to accomplish? Play through a fun story that lasts pretty long and can be either enjoyed as a singleplayer or coop experience? Check, no need to grind. Sure, there are level requirements for each story step, but you know, we have a huge world that rewards for exploration and is full of fantastic content and lore. That’s your own (very sad) problem if you only see red names to hit from all this.

But let’s see it from a different perspective, what else you want to achieve, beyond spending 100 and 100 hours with world completition and story. PvP? Everybody equally buffed to max level, has ZERO cost or “possible to screw up” decisions, and just as powerful as anyone else having access to the same high level item sets. What else? WvW? Buffed to max level, uses PvE gear. Unless you want to roam alone or in a small group, your gear doesn’t even matter in zergs. I had fun an got 20 WvW ranks with leveling up a guardian there from lv20 to 80.

But let’s go even futher, what else you want to do? Get the desired armor set of your choice? Well, you have dungeons for that. It is indeed sad that people see them only as a “skip everything, even videos I’ve never seen, stack up in a corner and nuke everything to hell”, but you can get your complete armor set pretty fast. Fast? Compared to what? It is endgame gear. Something you can also buy with a different skin from the trading post. With the money you make with playing PvP or PvE. Did I mentioned you can now also get that armor set by playing PvP? You know, that PvP I mentioned ^above? Is that grind, like red names you hit and that’s it? Poor you.

Oh, I misunderstood you, my apologies. You want ascended armors? Something, that was introduced to the game because ANet did admit they made endgame gear too easy to get for everyone? Something that is more like a prestige thing, barely (max 5%) better than the just mentioned exotic sets? Even their skins are ugly as hell. Well, prestige is called prestige for a good reason, because it’s not meant to be for everyone. Because it means something, and if you want shortcuts and easy to get backdoors, you don’t deserve it. Same goes for legendary items, that are called legendary for a very good reason – something I’ll never manage to get even close to, but you know what? I respect the time and effort, work and wealth invested to those weapons. And that my friend, is something you earn, not something you cry for on forums and be happy for a day or two if you get it for almost free (thanks god this isn’t that kind of place), while not even realizing you just destroyed something much bigger than you. But who cares, you have your shiny sword, right?

Too bad i can’t like ur post more than once. back to the main poster…Ohhh you know NOTHING about grind feast xD ever heared of “dragon nest” so drop whining and go do some more dungeons, story and champ trains….

No, you don’t. Nobody genuinely knows or cares what your armour is unless you’re constantly faceplanting Arah story in nothing but your undies or something silly. Nobody is currently demanding that teammates ping their armour before pressing on with a dungeon, or WvW or any other part of the game.

Well, I prefer to maximize my effectiveness in WvW and refuse to be at a stat disadvantage against other players, so ascended is a must. If you don’t think gear matters, feel free to throw on some greens and do the content because gear doesn’t matter right?

That’s a dumb way to put it. If you not skilled enough you still will get ur butt kicked in wvw and pvp armor plays small role.

So I have slowly been creating Twilight over the past wee while and now looking at the 1k gold pile that I need to raise to afford Dusk at its current Trade Post price im starting to feel like Gw2 is a grind, I know that the developers said that they wanted to make the game feel like it wasnt a grind but I think some of the recent changes and perhaps lack of change has made it into one of the most grindy games I have ever played. does anybody else think that the whole Idea of needing a precurser or puting so much focus on gold has made Gw2 into a grind? because all I seem to be doing when I play is earning gold by grinding different dungeon paths or doing pvp which is kind of a grind aswell to level… :L perhaps ii play wrong.

I’ll just leave this here.

I would call the crafting system grind, at least for me becouse i dont do Pve and on WvW nodes are mostly ignored.

So its hard for me to lvl crafting jobs.

The thing is 99% of GW2 content isn’t grindy. It’s the rest 1% of them is “really” grindy.
I suppose the 1% of it is what people called “optional”.

And I played korean grinder. In fact a few of them I’m like one of the top 10 people on the server that reached max level.

For some reason I felt GW2 is more grindy. Which isn’t necessary a bad thing. Those 1% of the content can keep me busy for a while.

GW2 is NOT a grindy game.

Just for an example, i played PWI.That game has 105 levels and you needed almost a year (normal play) to get you’r character to that level…1 character.Or you could grind the same dungeon all day long for xp.That would take you to 105 in 5-6 months.

After reaching level 100-105,you would need gear!

But why farm for it when all the dungeon gear (that takes 2-3 months to farm) is worthless in comparison to the CASH SHOP GEAR you can buy straight from the item mall for 1.5k $ …….but wait…we still need shards and the gear has to be + 12 or at least + 10……..these things cost another thousand dollars (so you have to pay 2.5k $ for endgame gear)…..OR if you don’t want to buy all this stuff you could still farm a dungeon and sell the materials for ingame gold which could be converted into item mall currency.

You would be farming the same dungeons over and over and over again for 1 year+ just to be on par with the cash shoppers, otherwise you would get killed by 1-2 skills without even bein able to scratch their armor.

That is grind.Grind for levels, for armor, for anything you need to have in order to compete with others.

GW2 never felt like a grind to me. Just by leveling and reaching 80,i get enough gold to buy a whole set of exotics, runes and everything else that is needed.

If you want a legendary or cosmetics you have to put in more work. That’s how it is.Those things are optional, and it’s your choice to get them or not.

Yes to you it isn’t.

There are actually quite a bit of people think GW2 is one of the most grindy game ever. That’s just people’s opinion.

If GW2 take away the 1% optional grind, everyone will agree it’s not grindy, but apparently it’s there.

Legendary – Hard to get – High cost – Most wanted – Alot of players show of.

Another weapon – Easy to get – Low cost – Everyone has – Few players show of.

Starting to say this is just my opinion but most legendary Weapons looks like crap and even if they don’t majority of all players are using them to show us what they have got. So I wouldn’t wanna be just like everyone else. Well obviosly the 2H-Swords have obvious effects and many likes it but please take a look around and I am sure that you can start counting them. But as for Seraph Greatsword(http://argos-soft.net/GW2/WeaponGallery/index.php?weapon=6&skinID=100fd5d&lang=en)… How many can you count using that sword?

I think most people grind in this game for bragging rights becouse there is no point in grinding in this game realy. Most of the stuff you will get eventually just by playing the game and enjoy it. As I have said before, the only thing IMO that I can think of is grindy is Dungeon armor and weapons since the only way to get it is by doing the same 3-4 dungeon paths over and over and over again. Well now you can play PvP to get them and guess what? I do that and it is way wonderfull and IMO no grind.

I have played GW2 since headstart and I am pretty sure I can get myself a Legendary now if I wan’t, though I have never got a Precursor drop

I am totaly against grind and I don’t feel that GW2 is even near any other MMO I have played when it comes to grind and these games isn’t even Korean games.

But you get pretty much $ by doing WvW atleast I do compared from when I do regular PvE. So you should be able to buy crafting mats.

Yes,you are right, that’s my opinion.I played many games in the past which were extremely grindy (most free to play games are).

But i think if you take that 1% away (legendaries, ascended gear) people will complain that there is nothing to work towards, or that they have no goals at all.

Here’s a story about pre-renewal Ragnarok Online at it’s prime time:

- Only around 10-15 storyline quests in the whole game available. The first one you could do at level 60 and it gave you a good item + exp. The rest you would need level 80+ and you were more likely to lose exp and not gain anything good. On later years we got normal quests, which were LITERALLY “Kill 200 of those things” and you’d get extra exp for that. People doing those quests were called spoiled brats.

- At level 98 it would take you about an hour to gain 1% exp as a decent average. In short it took 100 hours to get from 98 to 99, assuming you didn’t die. People in their 9x simply didn’t go out and do anything else than level in the fear or dying, unless they were at 0% exp. So that’s 100 hours in a damp dungeon killing the same monsters over and over again.

- There was something called exp/hr. You’d calculate your exp/hr to maintain that you have a good leveling rhythm. Later on the exp/hr average rose to 2.5m exp/hr for bad classes and 10m exp/hr, which meant that since it took 99m exp/hr from lvl 98-99, it only took you 40 hours with a bad class and 10 hours with a good class. It was literally smarter to level up a knight and leech 4 other classes with that.

- On the other hand, when things did become easier leveling wise, we got the re-incarnation system. So once you got your character to level 99, you got to start it all over again at level 1, but with better stats. Naturally they required more exp to get higher. Later on these new reincarnated characters got a level raise to 150 just in case you felt you didn’t have enough grind.

I have 11k AP, 2700+ hours played, legendary, around 150$+ gems bought with gold, etcetc. and I feel like most of the time I’m just waving my hands around running down a street and kittens are just raining on me. In comparison to RO, the game is like visiting a candy store.
… But I’ve also learnt to how to deal with grinding and finding enjoyment in the silliest things (my current amusement is just pretty much dying in GW2 since I don’t lose exp). In short GW2 (and everything with a long-term goal) will be grindy, if you only keep your mind on the price all the time. If you focus more on just having fun and finding the fun in things around you, you’ll forget about time and the prize will just come to you without you even realizing it.

Overall it’s a good to learn how to deal with long term goals.

You need to grind to obtain the second-best item in the game that is also just a visual upgrade that will not impact your gameplay whatsoever?

Oh my god.

And if you want a mini you need to buy it with money or grind gold to buy it. If you want some other cool skin you need to grind gold for it. Crafting means mostly grinding gold to buy what you need just like everything else.

It’s not with one thing it’s with almost everything and it’s related to gold being the way to get everything what on it’s turn is related to the cash-shop focus and them wanting to sell gems.

You can’t go into the world and play the game to earn that skin, mini, legendary. You grind gold and buy it. That’s the case for most things and where it’s not the case it tent to be temporary available stuff what also feels like a grind if there is something you (have to) go for every two weeks because else it will be gone forever.

Rappelz, Teso, even wow from what i hear are much bigger grindfests. Especiall rappelz. If you guys played that game without cash shop usage you would go mad. Seriously mad (if gw2 is already bothering you).

Don’t know Rappelz. The other two are not as grindy. Taking my example from the last post. If I want a mini in WoW I go into the world to get it. Farming for those items to get them yes. But no boring gold-grind for everything.

perhaps ii play wrong.

Yeah, I’m fairly convinced that you do. It’s entirely subjective, though.

I barely ever do anything in GW2 that I feel isn’t fun. This mean that I usually play a maximum of 3 hours a day. I don’t complete my daily if I I don’t feel like it’s enjoyable.
I do the dungeons I want to; Even if it may be more gold-efficient dungeons to run, the game isn’t about making money (it’s not a job). The game is about having fun.
I sure would like to have an Incinerator, but that will take a few months since I don’t grind in this game. Grind is optional. There’s no hurry but the one you make.

Sadly enough most items require gold and that exactly why this game starts to feel like a job. I now play in the same way as you but it means I had to throw all goals away that I usually have in other MMO’s (mainly collecting things). Simply because trying to do that in this game would end up being a boring gold-grind while in those others games I hat fun doing those things (they send me all over the world).

The problem with GW2 is that it rewards you bread crumbs instead of a loaf of bread. Sure there are plenty of asian MMO’s out there that have way longer grinds(I used to play MUonline), but compared to western MMO’s GW2 is definitely a grindfest. Even WoW vanilla felt a whole lot less grindy that GW2 does. It has a lot to do with the fact that dungeons/raids/PvP actually rewarded good gear(whole loaves of bread) and gave you a sense of progression. Even if you didn’t get anything on a dungeon/raid it still gave that sense that you were well rewarded for doing it and made you want to do it again(until of course you realized you slighted the RNG gods and run 13 is still a bust). In GW2 you only ever get small amounts of gold, a few tokens, or karma, which I guess they have abandoned. It’s extremely sad when someone does say Tequatl every single day and all they have to show for it is some ectoplasm due to the loot being 99% trash.
