Hello, recently I logged into GW2 only to find that half of my gold was missing! Naturally I was wondering what happened to it and thought there was a bug in the system so I submitted a ticket within the hour.

Well after the first day I received a reply asking for the usual, how much, when, and make sure you did not buy something from TP or merchant. I double checked and sent back all the info and let them know I did not buy anything. Well another day after that I receive a reply saying that my issue will have to be esclated and they will contact me when they find something out.

6 days later I get a reply finally. What am I told you ask? They said I mailed half my gold to someone!?! I thought back and the only thing I could recall mailing money wise was some silver to someone for sending me some rams in wvw (commander and all) and I wanted to thank him so I sent him some silver to help cover the cost.

Well they said that instead of silver it was gold I sent! I myself am pretty certain that it was silver.. I would never knowingly send a person half of my hard earned gold for some rams. They continued to tell me I could ask the person for the gold back but they can’t give me their contact info and I myself receive so may mails I try to keep my box clean..

I asked them if there was anything at all I could do to get some if not all of my gold back, and was told that there was nothing. I was upset, and most of my frustration was at a few facts…

1. Lets just say I did want to send gold.. That does happen and I am all for that, but would it be too much trouble to have a confirmation message when sending coins or items.. I’m still pretty sure I sent silver, but if a confirmation message popped up asking “Are you sure you want to send xxxx amount of GOLD?” I would have noticed.

2. I don’t even know whom this gold got sent to or if I really did send it.. after you send a mail there is no outbox showing what you sent and what items.. I can’t double check anything on my end it’s all up to the support team to “Tell” me what I did and if I disagree I have no prove.

3. With this issue taking a whole week just to tell me you sent gold not silver I have no chance of even asking the person I sent this coin to some questions. If I truly did send them half of my gold then I would own up to it and ask them if I could at least have some of it back. Mistakes happen and it would then be up to that person if they wanted to forgive me, but I can’t. I don’t know who it is and support won’t tell me.

4. I wholeheartedly thought and still do think this is an issue on their end. Why? Because 1 week prior I had a 2 week email exchange with support that got escalated to the devs because I could no longer purchase gem items in the store. I was thinking this issue might have just been some of the aftermath of that issue.

5. Last but not least.. this has taught me 1 lesson.. don’t be kind. Because I wanted to be kind enough to share some silver to people who send me rams as a commander (was sending 4s for each ram) I lost half of my gold. I doubt I will be sending mail ever again thanks to this experience if I even continue playing.

Out of all my reasons I’m upset I feel #1 and #2 should be fixed. No confirmation message is a HUGE downfall of anygame and most companies even have that as a basic requirement. The amount of issues this game still has with it’s basic mail, and TP systems is in a word.. insane.

I hope a dev or someone with enough power reads this and feels my pain of losing half of my gold. I just want this game to be as good as it should be and not cause the players grief.

Please feel free to post any comments.

Thank you.

what might have happened is a security breach. If you were stopped from buying gems did they tell you why? Was there any purchases logged that you haven’t done? Are you absolutely sure that your account was logged into only from your location?
It’s either
1. A mistake on your part. In that case, I’m sorry, but it’s not their fault
2. A security breach and someone used your account to send that gold off most likely to be sold somewhere. Just in case I would suggest changing your password and adding the phone authenticator for GW2 just in case you haven’t already done so.

As for the issue I was having a week prior with the TP. Attached is a screenshot showing that I had purchased the collection extender and I was unable to deposit any more items. I never received an collection extender items and it shows I did purchase it.

For this issue it was not an account getting hacked or broke into. The only 2 possible options was either they made a mistake and I really did only send silver not gold, or I made a mistake and I sent gold and not silver.

I still believe I sent silver and not gold since I had been doing it for quite a while, but could understand if I made the mistake.

However since I can’t look at what items I sent ArenaNet holds all the cards and I can’t see those cards.

Again the screenshot was from a previous issue. I thought this gold issue might have been some part of the aftermath of them cleaning this issue up.

Would be nice to have a ‘Sent’ box as well to see if messages were received and delivered visibly to the recipient.

However, it’s unfortunate if thats the case though if you sent gold rather than silver, it happens. Even I’ve done it. But thankfully it was with someone I knew well. But one just has to be careful. One can’t make everything dummy proof, somehow someone would still make such a mistake even if there was a prompt.

It would be nice if you could check unfortunately you can not. I do agree that it would be nice for that feature to be put in game.

My recommendation for the future. Send items not gold when you can.

There is absolutely no reason for customer support to lie to you about what happened. Assuming your account wasn’t hacked and the gold stolen by someone without your knowledge, you made a mistake and sent gold instead of silver. It happens, but at this point there’s nothing you can do about it.

I can agree with you that there is no reason for customer support to lie to me, but what they see on their side might not be accurate. To assume their system is perfect and can’t be flawed is a huge mistake.

Right now I fully understand that I won’t be getting any of my gold back whither I did or did not send the gold and I accept that.

The purpose of this thread is to try and convince their team and the community that a confirmation message for sending coin is necessary and when sending any mail there should be an outbox informing the user of who they sent their message to, and what items/coins were included.

I just don’t want to see any fellow players experience losing half of their gold and being told it was their fault without any prove on their side. I can only hope a dev sees this thread and decides to take action in favor of the players.

Anet collects a lot of data about player activity and it is indeed quite accurate, to the point that they can tell what an individual player was doing at a specific date and time. They use this data when investigating serious issues like bans for botting, player misconduct accusations, and so on.

For example, I’ve seen protestations of innocence in the Account Issues forum. Things like “I got a suspension for using foul language and I totally did not say anything bad!” Gaile Gray, Anet’s Support Liaison, will respond with something like “On June 14th at 5:45 PM you used two racial slurs and an f-bomb in one sentence, followed by five more over the next three sentences.” Their information is, indeed, quite complete and accurate.

There is absolutely no reason to think that if they said an amount of coin was sent from your account that the cs agent is guessing or mistaken.

If you meant this as a suggestion thread, I’m not seeing it. It looks more like a thinly veiled accusation against Anet, and as such there is little chance that anyone there is going to consider what you have to say on the matter. I suggest starting a new thread without any personal issues and calling it something like “Suggestion: confirmation box when sending money or items.”

I’m not sure why you think your memory of something you may have done in error might be better than Anet’s record of what actually happened. That doesn’t make any sense to me.

If Anet said you sent gold, then it’s extremely like you sent gold.

It’s an annoying thing to have happen for sure. But I’m not sure a window saying yes I’m sure would stop most of that stuff from happening.

I agree, a prompt asking if you are sure you want to send gold through the mail is probably a good idea. And a record of sent mails should probably also be in the game, as well.

However, it really does sound like you sent that gold through the mail by mistake. The ANet team looked into the records, and straight-up told you it happened. To claim their records are wrong, and that this was all the result of a bug in the game… well, anything’s possible, but you’re really stretching it.

What are you saying, that players who send silver through the mail actually send gold? That seems like a pretty huge, obvious bug to me. You’d think somebody would have noticed that by now, no?

Even if you had a record of your mails, who’s to say the bug wouldn’t make it appear as if you had sent the gold? If the bug is in the mail system, then the records of the mails could be affected.

I’m sorry it happened to ya, really. It sounds incredibly frustrating. Part of me thinks maybe the mods could have contacted the guy you sent the gold to, and asked him if he’d consider sending it back. But, then you have all these complications with whether or not he’s online at the time — not to mention how weird it would be for a mod to contact a player out of the blue and coerce them to give up some gold. I can see how a customer service rep would be sort of powerless in this situation.

Considering the fact that most confirmation windows and all other windows in the game look exactly the same (this is a design fail) it wouldn’t do any good as most players would just click whatever button made the transaction go through without care.

The other fail is the triple currency issue of this and other MMO’s (pennies-copper, dollars-silver, and in this case 100 dollars-gold). I’ve never seen an online store have 3 separate entry boxes for when your purchase exceeds 99 dollars. The real world only has 2 types of currency at any given time – coins and bills, these are separated on entry forms.
This is most likely where you made the costly mistake, putting the 4 in the first entry box instead of the second.

I don’t mind trading in 1500 dollars for a gold bar (or whatever the price is…) but I’m not going down to my local 7-11 and getting a slushie with it either.
I would much rather put 1500 silver in the box and have it convert it to 15 gold for me than make a mistake with a 3rd unconventional box for currency. And for that matter, why is there a copper box on the email form anyway, who is sending copper?

Hmm, I don’t know. It’s easy to think of all the countless times we didn’t make any mistakes and just mindlessly click “Okay,” and nothing bad happened. For most people, maybe they don’t send that much money through the mail, or if they do make a mistake it’s to a friend or guildie. They get it sent back, so it’s not a problem, and thus not memorable.
Even if you did screw up and put in the wrong amount, if the system is doing its job in second-guessing your intentions then you can easily correct the error. Nothing significant comes of it, and it may not even leave a lasting memory.
People think of Spell Check as useless, because it doesn’t catch everything — but it catches some things, and does so thanklessly.

This is an excellent point. Honestly, I’ve never even thought about why basically all MMORPGs use this ridiculous system for currency. I’m willing to bet most people have no idea how many copper makes up a gold. I’ll admit, I struggled with this for a while.

It would be way better for a game to say I had 10,000 “dollars” (or whatever fictional currency they want to use) than to say I had 1 “gold.” Most people would probably have a stronger grasp of how much wealth they actually had, and what it meant when they earned more.

I suspect there are two main reasons why the “Copper, Silver, Gold” model still persists in MMORPGs:

1) It’s tradition. This is how people understand money in MMOs, so they do it.

2) It’s intentionally confusing. Players essentially don’t understand the value of the coins they pick up. They see that an item sells for X amount of copper, or silver, and can’t easily translate that into an amount of gold. Thus, less efficient use of their resources, and more time sunk into the game.

That second hypothesis sounds pretty sinister — but to be honest, MMORPG devs can be some of the most deviously sinister people around. How else do you get so many players to spend 10 minutes of their play time waiting around for a boat or zeppelin to arrive, and feel like “Yes, this is quality gameplay that’s happening, right now. Please let me pay you $15 this month.”

ArenaNet has been pretty amazing with pioneering new ideas in this genre, so far. Maybe they could be the first to get rid of this “Copper, Silver, Gold” nonsense, in the interest of clarity?

ANet wouldn’t have been the first to eliminate the “copper, silver, gold” schema. FFXI did it (they only had 1 currency, named “gil”), and I’m sure other MMOs have done so as well. (Fond memories of some items being worth 30,000,000 gil.)

Honestly, the copper, silver, gold (and in some places, platinum) schema is well established. Yes, it may take a little while for first timers to understand that 100 copper = 1 silver (like 100 pennies = 1 dollar) and 100 silver = 1 gold, but once you have it, you should… have it.

Sadly, there isn’t any foolproofing that ANet can do to prevent a person from sending away their money. The universe can always build a better fool. Can they add confirmation screens? Absolutely. And people will still confirm that they want to send all their gold to some complete and total stranger. The question comes down to how much effort and inconvenience are they willing to build into the system versus the amount of complaints they’ll receive and have to deal with.

Edit: Consider this merely a life lesson that didn’t cost you anything more than some imaginary currency in a game. Always check twice when you mail/sell/purchase and item – whether in game or in real life.

Am I wrong or doesn’t the mail automatically check and see if you really wish to send… bla bla bla Gold already?

Last time I sent My spouce Gold, it asked me " are you sure you wish to mail… bla bla bla gold..bla bla silver and bla bla copper?"

I think what may have happened was you sent him Gold, the confirmation thing asked are you gonna send him gold…and you clicked yes.

How many times Must the server ask us if we are certain we wish to send money before it allows us to send money? Well in my opinion. Once. it asks once.

I don’t think it is the servers job to keep asking " are you really sure?" " yes" " are you really really sure?" " yes." " are you really really really really sure?" " yes." " Money sent."

No matter How many times it ask to confirm… there will always be people that accidentally send the cash and then ask for One More confirmation message…. if it were up to these people it would take a whole game day to send anyone anything.

The facts are people make mistakes, One conformation is enough, if even with one confirmation you still accidentally sent money… I think the fault was yours… not Anets… Next time, be more careful.

Everquest 1, had 5. Copper, silver, Gold, Platinum, and I believe Electrum.

100 copper = 1 silver
100 silver = 1 Gold
100 Gold = 1 Platinum
100 Platinum = 1 Electrum.

People need to be more careful. if a player just " clicks any button to make the transaction go through" without reading the box…. how is that Anet’s fault?

Someone didn’t look, rushed the transaction along, did not bother looking at what they were actually sending. Now they say " Anet needs to fix it , " “add a confirmation window.” Big news, they already HAVE a confirmation window when you wish to send someone Gold.

It just shows they rushed happilly along, and didn’t read the confirmation window, and Confirmed In their mind, because they don’t even remember the confirmation window. They are asking for what the game already gives them… a confirmation window.

Anet doesn’t have to provide a neon green flashing glow in the dark confirmation window. Know why?

Players that ignore the confirmation window as it is Now, to hurry the transaction through…Just as you described… would just click " accept" to rush the transaction through.

Learn to accept responsibility.

This sounds Like paranoia. “Oh I can’t do maths…it’s Anet’s fault.” Ummm no…

the Copper/Silver/Gold/Platinum system of Monetary units are part o the flavor of playing In an alternate universe with different Currency systems. While Only gil may work for other games, that wasn’t the direction the devs decided to take this game.

If a Player cannot figure out How many copper are in one Gold..maybe they need to get better at math.

100 copper = 1 silver.
100 silver = 1 gold.

100 × 100 = 10,000

10,000 copper = 1 Gold.

it’s not that hard, Just takes a couple seconds…and some finger counting ( I am female…. sometimes carrying over a zero… TMI)

Just means we need to do some basic maths to figure it out.

PS as to the whole." It’s harder to keep track of what is more expensive, and mentally inefficient."

It is Not hard to figure out that 99 silver 76 copper is less than 2 gold 34 silver 16 copper. I totally fail to understand your argument here. Triple currency systems are no harder to understand than double, or single.

If you Put in the effort.

I agree with you Talonblaze. Mistakes do happen and even with a confirmation box it will still happen. Like I said I would own up if it was my mistake and humbly ask if I could get it back, if not mistakes happen and it would be my own fault. Just wish I could check cause I still think I sent silver and not gold.

The problem is, how can support get it back? There is only one of two ways.

One is to take it away from the other player. They can’t do that. For one he may no longer have it. For another, they can’t just go into accounts and take items or gold away from them based on something that another player claims to have happened. That player would be outraged if they did that and who could blame them. Their policy is that anything sent through the mail is a gift and is not refundable.

The second way is for them to make up gold out of thin air and send it to you. For one, support may not have the tools to do that. Even if they could, it’s a bad idea for support to be making up gold just because a player says he made a mistake.

Example: new exploit.
I “accidentally” mail out 1000 gold to a friend. Friend buys 1000 gold worth of whatever. Then I contact support. Oops, I made a mistake. I meant to send out 10 silver. Please send me my gold. Support says, “sure, no problem”. Makes up 1000 gold out of thin air. Sends it to me.

His issue is Not with Anet, it is with the guy he gave the Gold to. He simply has to say " dude, I meant to send you x silver, I accidentally sent you x Gold…can you send me My gold back?"

And hope the Guy is a decent person.

As I see it there are 2 issues.

1. he cannot find the guy.
Not Anet’s problem.

2. The guy is found but decides to keep the gold.

Not Anet’s problem.

OP, it’s very possible that whoever you sent gold to wasn’t even aware that it came from you.
Opening up mails in the middle of action, it’s easy to miss small details, like attached cash.

As a Commander you should never feel the need to recompense anyone for sending you siege, shares of bags, etc. In fact you should half expect it, and thankyous are not required because the items you’d received are THEIR thanks to YOU.

I often convert spare badges into siege and send on to a tag, in gratitude for their leadership. I would be sad if a commander sent me anything of value in return.

I very often typed in gold instead of silver and placed a buy order of say 30 gold for an item of 30 silver.

It’s not nice that the person you sent the gold to didn’t respond or returned the gold, but don’t blame this on Anet. They checked their records and found the problem – next time be more careful. End of story.

Just wondering… how is it bad design, when you’re the one who put the numbers into the wrong box?

Note – if someone sent me 300 Gold, I ain’t sending it back. I would, however, submit a ticket to make sure Anet knows that I didn’t buy this from an RMT company.

Okay, get this, you had to click through a few prompts and if you weren’t paying attention then how is one more confirmation box going to stop a mistake like that? I mean, if you really misclicked and thought it was silver instead of gold . . . why would yet another confirmation screen stop you?

It’s like the people I used to get while doing Tech Support: “I accidentally formatted my drive.” Yes. These people exist, and it does give a confirmation window/prompt every time. They don’t notice, or they start it before they realize the mistake, and it’s done.

There is no cure for someone not paying attention and making that sort of error, let alone with more confirmation windows.

@ the OP:

I am sorry about the loss of your money. It doesn’t matter whether it was your fault or ANet’s, it is still hard to take a hit like that.

Having said that, I do agree that there needs to be a confirmation pop-up any time you’re sending anything other than words. It shouldn’t matter if what you’re sending is gold, items, armor, or boosters. A simple pop-up could prevent so many player errors.

Poor design in a very simple form could be partly to blame. The way coins are displayed in the Mail window might lead to errors. Rearranging things a little would reduce the need to be extra-attentive to what type of coin you are submitting.

See the picture example below. For clarity’s sake, something like this should be done anyplace coins are shown in-game.

I hate to think that the game we love is teaching the lesson “don’t be kind”.

To the OP, next time double and triple check what you send. It is your fault, not A.Net’s. They have logs on everything and if they said you did that, then you did. Logs don’t lie, people do.

Completely agree.

This makes as much sense as the teenage girl who rear ends a car while texting, then complains about how it is the company who made the phones fault.

If they don’t have a triple redundancy system, you get threads like this. Where players make mistakes, then are so high and mighty, they go on some crusade to make themselves feel better, trying to get the community to rally behind them.

Then on the when we do have a multiple redundancy system, player post complaining about how much a pain it is to accomplish the task tied to it.

There’s something wrong with this game, I never did so much mistakes in game ever. Recently I bought a lot of overpriced items because sometimes when you click on a price then it’s selected and you can enter your price but sometimes that price won’t select and when you type 1 in a field then it will add and when tere was 3 then it will be 31 silver instead of 1 silver and when you’re bidding a lot of items then it’s easy for a mistake and I had 3 or 4 mistakes like that.

After reading through all of the replies there seems to be a couple of issues that I would like to point out.

1. There is no confirmation message. After you type in the number and click “Send” it is gone. You don’t know how much you sent and can’t ever find out without contacting support. For this I simply would like a confirmation box to pop up after clicking “Send” saying something like “Are you sure you want to send xxxx Gold?” or even only have this confirmation box when sending gold, and not silver/copper.

2. I’m not trying to get my gold back. I know/understand that there is nothing I can do to get my gold back at this point. Had I known who I sent it to I could have asked but I don’t and have no way to find out. It is disheartening to lose half of your savings (was saving for a twilight sword.. but dang that Dusk costs a ton!!) but life will go on.

3. A ton of people seem to think that this game is bug prove and if it was a bug why hasn’t more people found it. I can only say that game bugs don’t always occur and sometimes might need a set of certain requirements to be met. I honestly think/recall that I put the number in the silver box and clicked send, but I could be wrong. However to assume that Anets system is perfect and it can’t be a bug is ignorant to how the game works. Bug happen, and depending on how difficult it is to repro them and their severity they get fixed. New patches cause more bugs to be created and fixes others.

Thanks for all of your responses, some people make awesome points and others input helpful ways of preventing issues like this from even happening. I hope that a dev reads this thread and understands that this is something that would benefit the game.

You already get a request for confirmation BEFORE you send the Gold. If you Just click " accept" it is your fault. We do not need triple and quadruple redundancy to deal with the fact that players do not observe, and are careless.

This is a player issue. Not A company issue. next time be more careful.

The issue as I see it is, you are not accepting the lesson this teaches you. Life is different from school…Life gives the test first, then teaches te lesson.

The problem is you have not learned the lesson.

3. A ton of people seem to think that this game is bug prove and if it was a bug why hasn’t more people found it. I can only say that game bugs don’t always occur and sometimes might need a set of certain requirements to be met. Bug happen, and depending on how difficult it is to repro them and their severity they get fixed. New patches cause more bugs to be created and fixes others.

The issue here is, that you are asking the entire playerbase to accpet that your memory is more reliable than Anet’s computers and log….

Thanks for all of your responses, some people make awesome points and others input helpful ways of preventing issues like this from even happening. I hope that a dev reads this thread and understands that this is something that would benefit the game.

This is something that would slow the game needlessly. The game offers one confirmation prompt. It is enough. I have never had an issue where I thought I was sensing one amount, and when i saw the confirmation prompt saw that I was sending the incorrect amount, and failed to change i before I confirmed it.

People seem to think that Anet needs to spend time coding and re-coding the game to make up for their carelessness. They don’t.

If you wish to remain careless, do not complain when stuff happens.

Life tested you, then tried to teach you a lesson. You learned the wrong lesson.

For a while there after launch the email system had an amusing little bug where it would randomly select someone standing near you and change the account name from what you had already selected to theirs. I emailed off some mats to someone standing near me like that. I had chosen a guild members name from the guild list but it deselected him and put the nearby random stranger’s account name in while I was putting the mats into the email. Fortunately he was nice enough to send them back.

1.[…]but would it be too much trouble to have a confirmation message when sending coins or items.. I’m still pretty sure I sent silver, but if a confirmation message popped up asking “Are you sure you want to send xxxx amount of GOLD?” I would have noticed.

God please no, not more confirmation boxes…How about players exercise caution instead. You mess up, too bad, that should teach you.

2. I don’t even know whom this gold got sent to or if I really did send it.. after you send a mail there is no outbox showing what you sent and what items..

This is actually a fair suggestion though, I agree.

3. I don’t know who it is and support won’t tell me.

I wouldn’t imagine they would…

4. I wholeheartedly thought and still do think this is an issue on their end. Why? Because 1 week prior I had a 2 week email exchange with support that got escalated to the devs because I could no longer purchase gem items in the store. I was thinking this issue might have just been some of the aftermath of that issue.

Correlation does not equal Causation, say that three times!

You’re taking the wrong lesson from this…mistakes will be repeated.

No confirmation message is a HUGE downfall of anygame[…]

Oh how nice that would be, no more solving differential equations and sacrificing goats just to toss an item, one can only dream…

IMO it sounds likely that you, a human being, made a mistake once after sending money in the mail many times. If you do it a lot you are bound to make a mistake eventually. This seems a lot more plausible than a bug existing in the mail framework which has never been discovered by anybody until now.

Sucks, but it happens. Something that anet SHOULD do is require confirmation whenever you are going to send more than a gold in the mail. Just a little popup (or 2) that say “ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO SEND x% OF YOUR TOTAL GOLD?”

What was that quote?

“Nothing can be made foolproof because fools are so ingenious”

There was another thread last week or so where someone was all angry because he deleted a character that had a lot of armor skins in inventory. He wanted to know WHY wasn’t there some sort of warning.

The answer he got, the actual words from the delete panel:
Deleting a character will permanently destroy any items in that character’s inventory as well as any character-based unlocks associated with that character.
If you are certain you wish to delete “[Character Name],” type the name below and click “Delete.”

They can put in warnings and confirmations. That doesn’t mean people will read them

That’s all I really want. Very simply when you are sending 1g and higher it to ask you “Are you sure you want to send x Gold?”

99% of the time I only send silver, the other 1% is to people and trust. A confirmation box for 1g and higher would prevent most accidental sends since it would not be common. It might not prevent all, but if it can prevent people from sending months of hard earned gold by accident then I’m 100% for it.
