^ So basically: People clearly exploiting should only lose what they gained from the exploit rather than the account itself?

Why? If you exploit something you should lose access to your account, simple as that.

It is not like someone robbing a store gets away with just losing out on the stolen goods after all.

No, but if the store had a price tag on bread that sold the bread for 1 cent and you bought 100 loaves, went to check out, paid, got a receipt, and then was told to have a nice day and went home. Do you think you deserve to have the cop show up a few days later and put you in jail for life?

You just thought that was a good f’n deal on bread. Because the store LET you buy it, and the STORE set the price, not you.

I am rather sure that there is a law against that.
If something is a clear mistake, you taking advantage of it will end up with you getting in trouble. Even if the mistake was made by the store/bank/company/whatever. No one in their right mind would buy 100 loaves of bread naturally after all.

Lets take another more clear example: You go to a bank and find out that you can withdraw unlimited amount of money without it changing the balance of your account. You decide to withdraw $10 000. Should you really get away with that just because the mistake was the banks and not yours?

If people exploit, they should get punished and the only real punishment one can get in an MMO is to get banned.

What if thousands of people heard about the mistaken price and ran into the store and grabbed hundreds or thousands of loaves of bread before the shopkeeper was able to react and close it down? What if people who did this were able to turn those loaves of bread into something that was very rare and valuable at no cost to them, worth a lot of gold (in today’s terms several thousand gold)?

Still cool and ok to do?

Actually people, in their right minds, do buy large numbers of loaves of bread. Quite frequently in fact.

You are mistaken about the law.

Also, unless the merchant posts a policy restricting the number of items purchaseable (limit 2 per customer, etc) the customer can buy as many as he can pay for.

If an item is listed at a given price the merchant, with some local variations, must honor the price. Some regions’ laws are more punishing of the merchant for failing to honor their pricing than others of course. In CA, for example if a customer took 100 loaves of bread to the checkout counter for purchase because they saw them priced at $.01 each, and the shopkeeper refused to sell them at that price, the store would face a fine of $1000 per item. $100,000 total in that case. If it could be shown that the inaccurate price listing was intentional the penalties would likely be more severe.

All of that said, exploiting game bugs should be punished. Its usually pretty obvious when something is an unintended bug.

If an armored car accidentally drops a bag of money on the ground, well its the armored cars fault right? So you can pick it up, no problem. Sorry, you are under arrest. If a bank computer mistakenly gives you $10,000 you can take it right? Its the banks fault. Sorry, you are under arrest.

As to simple pricing errors, all print and online merchants will often have in fine print in their terms and conditions that they are not responsible for pricing errors and will not honor incorrectly printed prices. This happens often with airline tickets, on occasion the airlines will honor it when they sell an international first class ticket for a hundred dollars or some crazy amount but most of the time they will void them.

Okay, first of all the difference between buying 100 loaves of bread for 1 cent each, and walking back to my car and having 100 loaves of bread that I did not buy are completely separate instances.

Im not saying these people should not be punished, but the punishment should be a roll back on their account, making them loose all of the stuff they earned with exploitation. In the end, anet dosent want to spend the time A: taking responsibility that the exploit was their fault, and B: Rolling back accounts when its far faster and easier to ban people.

Also, please dont get me wrong. Im not sticking up for exploiters, they break the game and make it awful. Im just saying dont make it seem like its 100% their fault for playing the game in the “most efficient way”. Because thats what they are doing, finding the best way to get money, or items, or what have you; even if that way was never intended.

Should anet go and ban EVERYONE who was farming chests in silverwastes when it first came out? You know, when you could get like 50 chests a minute in a massive unending train? According to them that was CLEARLY unintentional.. But to us, we’ve never seen the area, we dont know what they intended, we dont know what the spawn times were SUPPOSED to be. If you got banned for opening those chests all day, would you find that fair? In that instance, anet did the right thing. Said “crap, that was a mistake” and patched it. Not banned thousands of people for “Exploiting the obviously too fast spawning loot chests” or some bs.

For what its worth, rolling an account back to the point prior to the exploitive gains is not punishment. Not profiting from an exploit is no more a punishment than would be a court sentence that a bank robber return what he stole.

The thing everyone seems to be forgetting here is that an exploit is not a hack. These people didnt break into the code and rip things out they were not supposed to. They played the game in the way they saw fit as the game allowed them to do so.

Some people knew what they were doing wrong, some people were just ignorantly following along. A bank robber robs from a bank and takes something illegitamatly. A person getting a bank account that was offered with 10% interest then depositing 10k$ (and making 1 grand off interest) and being arrested because the interest was supposed to be 1% is another story.

While what you say is correct, it’s unfortunately not the case here. It’s one thing to be neutral and to state to not assume anyone’s word is necessarily true. However, when the only time that they do this is when it’s against a certain person’s word, it makes you wonder what their position really is and the intent of their post.

Let’s go back to the day of the announcement of HoT.

Anet made a statement that there would be precursor collections and new legendary weapons. We did not see the new weapons or anything like the mastery system showing that they would exist. All we had at that time was Anet’s word. Let’s say that I then went into any of the threads at that time about precursor collections or new legendaries and made a statement such as “we don’t know that they’ll be in the expansion as all we know is that they said that they would be”. How do you think people would take that? Would you have sided with me?

While I did buy a new account late last year for the rewards, as I did not have the info for my old one, I can wait a little longer for them to put in the fix. When they stated that they’re actively working on it, I believe them as I have no reason not to. When they stated that they are close to a fix being implemented, I believe them as I have no reason not to. They have not given me any notion that they have a tendency to lie which would then cast doubt on any statements that they make.

Can they realistically always roll back accounts? Any precursors they make and sell with a karma weapon exploit can’t be taken away from the people who innocently bought them off the trading post. If they made the current equivalent of several thousand gold and bought items with that gold, that gold is now in the system and can’t be removed from the people that sold to them, also innocently. The amount of gold made with those exploits was significant for a game that was just starting out and once it left those accounts, impossible to retrieve without a game wide rollback.

It’s hard to believe that people didn’t know that the prices were wrong. If you see prices increasing across the Tiers in the cultural weapons and then suddenly drop down to a tiny amount for just one weapon, it is clearly a mistake. If you can buy cheap materials and combine them to make large amounts of gold in a short time, like nowhere else in game, that also is clearly a mistake. ANet consistently says if you see an exploit and take advantage of it, you will be sanctioned.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Exploit
The original pricing for the greatsword at the Cultural Weaponsmith had a typo, reducing the karma costs by a factor of 1,000.4 These weapons could be combined in the Mystic Forge to create exotics or rares to use or salvage for ecto. This was combined with farming certain dynamic events that triggered frequently. Players taking advantage of this hundreds of times were banned; those taking advantage of it dozens of times were suspended. Those who were banned were allowed to regain their account by apologizing and promising to delete their wealth acquired through this method.5 Some who tried to launder items or coin through others were re-banned. (The talk page includes a discussion about measuring the net impact on the game.)

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

It probably depends on what it was and the extent. I personally don’t feel that it’s an option the longer it takes to do so. But then my take on an account roll back is one that resets the entire account back to what it was at a previous point in time. The issue with this is that all progress since that point is lost. That may be why they were developing the methods to specify exactly what to change back rather than an all or nothing scenario.

Luckily, unlike the karma weapon exploit, what you got from this was primarily account bound. The items that could be converted to gold would have a negligible effect. What I’m hoping they took into account, and I’m pretty sure that they did, is that if someone’s AP got rolled back, they don’t get the same AP chest again.

To call it “ill gained” implies they did something wrong.

They did do something wrong, they played the game the way it was created. Just like all the people banned for making chili peppers and forging rare cultural weapons back in the day.

Seriously though, don’t expect this company to take any blame on any issue or bug that arises in this game; it is obviously not their fault. I mean, they just made the game.

Blame is a funny word. It’s quite different from responsibility. But there are also times when things do happen that are beyond any individual’s control. Now those that want to blame and see things in terms of blame will look to blame.

But anyone’s who’s actually worked on a project with 300 other people, a project that has deadlines, they’ll find that it’s virtually impossible to find every bug. Bugs will get through. It’s NORMAL for bugs to get through. Most MMOs have pages of bugs on their bug list and Guild Wars 2 is no exception.

The more complex the program, the more people working on it, the more it’s going to have bugs. I have never seen an exception to this. If you want to talk about blame, go right ahead.

But it doesn’t mean that blaming people is fair, in any case.

In the case of people getting banned for exploiting bugs, that’s slightly different. People who did something a couple of times didn’t get banned. People who did it hundreds of times did.

If they can’t figure out that, say, buying something for less than everything else in the same list (that all have identical numbers) that gives them insane profit isn’t a bug, they’re probably not smart enough to play MMOs in the first place.

People who did it hundreds of times, spent an entire day just buying more of them, should be banned. And even then those that accepted a roll back, got their accounts back anyway.

The patch that introduced the hom issue came with many other bugs compared to anets previous patches this one was clearly rushed.

Do you have any experience being on a large team working on something very complex? Have you done any form of programming? Were you a part of the team that worked on that patch? If no then how could you know it was “clearly rushed”? Comparing the number of bugs in one patch to another does not give you an accurate account of whether a patch was rushed or not.

Arenanet has multiple times in the past said they were going to do something but then eventually said they no longer were able to or that it was going to take a much longer time than initially said. Possibilities are that the fix is almost and will be out soon, in which case my not taking there word for it doesn’t do anything and it instills some more trust in me with them. (not that they would care about my opinion of course) Or they could be really far from a fix because it is really complicated and they want to give the issue more time to get forgotten and know that by saying it’s almost done, people will stop hounding them about it. (every new post made on the forums is currently met with someone giving them some nice links to these old posts and saying dont worry its almost out) There isn’t a time limit on almost, they could now take another 2 months and still not have “lied” All i meant was that they did stand to gain from lieing if it was taking longer than they wanted. So not saying they are lieing, but i don’t believe everything they say just because they say it.

Why on earth would we pre-order something we know so little about while we very much know what temporary unaivalable and we are close actually means.

Soon is very hopeful, and the update is rather appreciated; thank you.

Now to hope and pray that soon means days and not weeks lol

Joke’s on you, soon actually means “about another month”.
Thank you ANet…

I get the feeling you’r not very used to sarcasm Xlion. I was actually saying not to pre-order… kitten , jokes are way better when u don’t have to explain them.

… and I’m impressed by your powers of quick judgement. I’m still not sure whether it was irony or sarcasm I didn’t get. ;-)

I haven’t been able to find any news on HoM and I’ve been checking for months. I thought HoM would be fixed in this latest patch. The 6/23/2015 one… I had read some post that the fix would be released in the “next big patch that would be received with some critical acclaim” Or something. I haven’t been able to find it again. I understand Anet is busy with other projects at the moment. But seriously. Any news when it will actually be fixed?

Ahh, thank you. I understand now I think. They’ll release it on the 4th of July? Perhaps? Maybe? Or when the expansion comes out in 2 years?

So Lions arch is fixed.. And anet broke every build and all the dynamics of everythign with their core updates..

But I dont see HoM.

There gonna be fixing the kitten they break, and breaking new things so much that HoM is never getting fixed.

I quit.

Just linked my account recently and have been looking forward to getting the skins. Unfortunately it’s been like this for awhile and I really really am getting impatient. I know theres a lot for anet to sort out in terms of the titles/ap and it’s not a #1 priority at the moment, but I’d like to know a potential date when this will be back up. Would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
