Happy Birthday, GW2
Being wowed by the big earth elemental in the starter zone for humans
Then trying to find the hall of monuments orb so I could look awesome..

I remember being a low level with some friends in the Sylvari starter area. We were in this swamp doing the heart and suddenly this enormous wurm appeared beside us. We started fighting it and managed to kill it, just us and a couple of others that showed up.
ANet may give it to you.

Actually, no. The early access started at 11 PM (my time) on the 24th and at 9PM on the 24th on ANet’s time. So it’s today, 9 more hours.

Let us always remember the “Loot Cave!”

^this, and the whispers of “where did you get that sword?” When people saw my fiery dragons breath sword.

I remember Twilight Arbor story mode being about the hardest dungeon in the history of dungeons. Ever.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
The one-time event in Southsun where you had to kill the Ancient Kraka. Whole community took pics at its corpse once we finally killed it . . . hours later it seemed.
The first time I saw Shadow Behemoth. I remember pausing, blinking a couple of times, and then I shrieked in glee like a teenager while charging in to the fight. (I think I scared a few years off my husband’s life at the same time lol)
Ah nostalgia….
Thanks to all that have replied so far.

I loved that cave! It’s a shame how they really try to milk their player base out of $. I don’t play it out of principle at this point. I’m sure the xpacs are good, just not willing to give them any more money to find out.

I still always stop to rez people. Etiquette, people!

Early access was great. Seeing new characters react to the different events. Learning the mechanics for fighting different bosses.

Nothing like experiencing everything for the first time with everyone! Remember when people in Orr just absolutely could not keep temples capped? REMEMBER WHEN DUNGEONS ACTUALLY TOOK COORDINATION!?

Yep. It did. If you are in Guild Wars 2 in 9 more hours, I’ll ping you the first gift I got.
(From my Diary. ^^)
Aug24,2012 11pm sharp, the servers came up. Got in and got the first name I wanted, Sandy Claws, then made Astral Projections, Slythy Toves, Slayer Of Insects, and Oops Did I Shoot You. Still need to make 3 toons; Resistance Is Fatal and then 2 names, Liberal Pacifist and Dewy Killem, may not be available till Tuesday. Played until I got kicked at 6am. Paid 1silver and got the guild name Lost My [MIND]. Grabbed it first thing as someone else got the name last BWE.

It started midnight my time, so just as the 24th became the 25th. My oldest alt has an Aug 25 birthday.
There were lots of things to discover, though thanks to beta I’d seen a lot of the very start already. So here are the things that were new to me that weekend: Getting the invite to the guild I’m still in now (we formed in April 2012 on gw2roleplayers.com and had lots of story RP before launch, but this time was the for-real invite) while in a mob of newly made characters and then heading to a guild dance sync party in the guild colors.
After that I had a lot of discoveries and oh-wows. I’ll stick to that which happened on the anniversary date, though.
My favorite memory is still the Flame Legion shaman in Ashford during one of the first BWEs, when it scaled way too hard and started oneshotting everyone in that entire half of the map.
Starting the game with a Sylvari character and [after an early story part] wondering where my clothes went.
Guild Wars 2 headstart access times announced. Servers may go up 3 hours early
“If you pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 (fully paid off), then you’ll gain access to the game on Saturday, August 25, soon as the clock strikes midnight. As always, that’s in Pacific time, since ArenaNet is situated on the West Coast. In an effort to prevent a potential clusterfluff, ArenaNet may actually bring the servers up three hours before then.”
So, the early access was scheduled to start at midnight Pacific Time, August 25 with a possibility they would start up 3 hours early, at 9PM Pacific Time on August 24th, which is what they did.
ANet may give it to you.
Yes, and I was sooo happy. Even though I’d napped that afternoon I wasn’t sure I could stay up to 3 am my time (Eastern). I watched them like a hawk after that announcement and when it went up 3 hours early as promised I hurled myself in, rapid-fire made my five alts for name grabbing, then worked on Donari and played him quite a bit until I could stay up no longer … which happened to be at 3 am.
I suppose in hindsight that could have been a problem for people that didn’t start checking three hours early and lost out on some desired names as a result. But I’ve never seen a single complaint along those lines. I think everyone was on the edge of their seats. It was the first game I took time off from work for — I had the whole week off for launch. I needed to burn up use or lose annual leave anyway.

Those were the days. That boss alone got me 90% of my combat healer title.
One of my first potent memories is of the bandit champ, Kessex Hills, I believe.
Out of a roughly 25-man party, most ended up dead, with only 3 stalwart warriors keeping the fight going. As one led the boss on a merry chase, the others rescued the defeated until the second wave could finally defeat him.
Nowadays, that boss melts within a half-minute.
/wistful

How about the prenerf Fire Elemental and only low level players killing that thing? That was a massacre. Lol. Dead people everywhere. Couldn’t even get close to the boss because even the bridge leading to it was being firebombed by numerous fire elemental flying around and the boss’ fire attacks. Most chars were completely naked by the time they killed that thing.

I remember as an Asura during headstart me and 4 other Asura tried to kill the Thermanova Reactor boss. We kept getting wiped, and after a half hour we killed it, having no idea it was a world boss we all thought wtf, this game is hard!
Forgot that fight. During, rinse and repeat. Learning how to dodge and attack. So uch fun.
Anyone who wasn’t around back then, here is a August 28, 2012 YouTube video of the Fire Elemental Boss. It took them about 10 minutes (go to about the 10.50 minute mark on the video).
ANet may give it to you.

And they still didn’t defeat it in the video. Now a days we have the 30+ range crowd on the pedestals blasting away and it’s gone in two minutes. Trying to do it with maybe 10 people looks suicidal.
RIP City of Heroes

This is probably because they had an excellent system in place for reserving a character name from gw1. I had Shoot N Loot saved prior to launch and though I did not notice the early access for an hour after it began, I got my name.
Gosh I remember my first (many) attempts at Fire Elemental and also the Metrica Province jumping puzzle. Both gave me the impression that the game was going to be very difficult indeed. That JP is still one of my favorites tbh.
For me, head start was a bit of a blurred flurry. I remember that night sitting at my PC and trying to log in on the dot when Anet said they would kick it early and true to their word they did and i was surprised when i got in right away.
After that, it was a mad rush to create my characters and reserve their names, even though we were assured our GW1 names would be safe, i just wanted to make sure. And ofc, registering my Guild name.
But one thing I’ll never forget, is that it was the most exciting moment I felt about any game, when i logged in and heard that epic GW2 log in music. It was music to my ears sort of speak and i don’t think i slept for like 3 days. Yea good old times and hey, I’m still here, so those amazing guys at Anet must have done something right to hold my attention for so long. I know i gripe sometimes, but i can honestly say, no other game has captivated me as GW2 has and GW1 for that matter.

Yeah I miss that log in screen. It was epic. The current one I don’t even look at, I wish they had never taken out the command line so we could still have it. I wish they’d bring that back.

I remember the first time I stumbled upon the Shadow Behemoth. I was in shock, I had a level 16 warrior and I couldn’t believe I had a chance against it. I talked to my guild about it and only 1/3 of them had heard of it. Then SB broke, and didn’t return for months. When it returned it started raining “Final Rest” seemed like everyone was getting that staff. I got 3 of them in a week. I also remember all my guildies meeting every evening at 9pm game time at the diving board in LA. When the game first came out , my guild was in it 24 hours a day. I’m still in that guild, but I’m the only one that still plays daily.

Indeed, that’s when I fell in love with with GW. Got my key from Game spy arcade(anyone else remember that?) at the time I mostly played FPS like quake 3 arena AvP2 and KoTOR. Then I played Guild Wars…… And here I still am. If someone had told me id be playing Guild Wars for 10 years, I’d say they where nuts. And I’ll probably keep.playing both till the servers are switched off, my PC brakes and can’t afford a new one or I die.

I remember the first time I saw Divinity’s Reach, I was like OMFG I’ve never seen any city in any MMORPG this LARGE!!!!!
I also remember seeing the mesmer class in game for the first time 3 years ago, and I was like holy kitten, they can use clones!? So cool!!!
Lv.80 Scrapper (Alchemist Persenia)
Lv.80 Druid (Mender Zalintyre)
The first thing I did was go to Lion’s Arch and tame a pig for my ranger. Three years on and that pig and I are still kicking butts together.
I also remember getting so angry trying to do the Sharkmaw jp that I couldn’t even look at it for a few months. Yeah that sucker’s pretty easy now.
If only they would make their anniversary events tied to accounts. Some of us didn’t keep our characters from Headstart or Launch, so now we have to wait weeks or longer just to get our gifts.

Then you would only get 1 birthday for the account, instead of multiple birthdays for multiple characters, so no thx, I rather have 18 birthday presents.

Not sure why you couldn’t keep your toon(s)@head start or launch, I got to keep mine as did many others. Unless you accidently deleted them or something. Then all I can say is sorry if that’s what happened. I like the system they have in place, it’s the same in GW1 and should really stay as is. GAME ON
I had no idea it was an anniversary, I would have expected some kind of event though even a small one.
