I am getting somewhat frustrated, because it seems that hardened leather is either expensive to buy, or else it is getting harder to find them in drops.

I finally have a character whose crafting level is high enough to craft 400+ skill items, but am stuck, due to not finding enough hardened leather.

Am I missing something? Help!

Well you could always upgrade the thick leathers in the forge mate.

You are probably not missing anything. Hardened leather drops are supremely low, hence the price of it on the TP. I can only suggest doing a Cleric farm in BF (assuming you have HoT) and Bitterfrost events, even then, you are not guaranteed to get what you want, but you do stand a (slightly) better chance.

Also because the average conversion is 25:1. You would be using 39s worth of thick leather to make 23s worth of hardened leather.

You’ll be happy to know that in their last AMA on Reddit ANet said that they would be introducing a method to farm hardened leather. Unfortunately they did not give an ETA on that release.

Anet did announce they would introduce ways to get leather, and when they did the price dropped 20s, per Square,

Seriously though does no one farm in this game, all 3 of the new maps

Bloodstone Fen
Ember Bay
Bitterfrost Frontier

All of these maps drop Unstable Hide which can be salvaged into the Hardened Leather Sections, me personally after some light farming on these maps and refining them can make 20-25 T6 Leather Squares a day, slow, but very possible.

I think the major change is the way mats are drops. I been getting less class specific armor than ever before.

I would say the change took forever because cloth classes tag less mobs than either heavy or medium
