Hardened leather section
There are two separate problems here.
1. Ascended items and their effort to craft.
2. The tyranny of the Free Market.
You can’t solve #1 because Anet wants you to play the game using those “time-efficient ways” that involve playing the game.
You can’t solve #2 without direct price controls. There is already a price floor of selling whatever it is to a vendor, you can’t sell for less than that, but a price ceiling could cause a myriad of new issues including a repeat of “Exotic is too easy to build”. It’s supposed to be inefficient to buy your stuff outright.
“It’s the journey not the destination” or whatever.
There are a couple of ways to farm for hardened leather sections, AB meta and Bitterfrost Frontier. You can hit the chests in Bitterfrost Frontier after each storm cycle. It’s easy to fill up your bags there and salvage for leathers.
ANet has already mentioned that they will make this more farmable (aka cheaper) in the future on reddit. This was mentioned alongside the AB Multiloot nerf that will come.
Nobody knows when exactly but if you wanna wait you can probably save a lot of gold.
Leather has gotten very expensive, and ANet will be implementing a way to farm leather soon. But it doesn’t cost 50 gold to make an exotic insignia. It costs 10-15 gold depending on the stats you want. Whether or not exotic insignias should be this expensive or not is up for debate (I think they should be cheaper considering exotics are mostly used by newer players who don’t have that much money), but they don’t cost 50 gold
I don’t seem to get Hardened Leather anymore, at all. I’ve hit a wall, trying to level my Leatherworker. I don’t have problems with any other tier/mat. I hope something is done sooner rather than later.

Viper’s intricate gossamer insignia requires 5 gossamer patches. Each patch requires 10 cured hardened leather squares. each square sells for 1g, you do the math.

Ori’s math is correct. The recipe outputs 5 patches at a time.

It’s just crazy, and waiting for ArenaNet to address a global issues like that seems like taking forever. One really has to wonder where their priorities lie.

Their priorities lie in ensuring the economy is balanced across all markets, not just one. If/when they change anything about leather, it will have all sorts of other ramifications. It’s easy to change “too expensive” into “vendor trash” and vice versa; acting too quickly is a sure fire way to make things worse.

Good. I would rather wait a bit longer for JS to address issues he finds in the economy and fix them in a good way than have repeats of what he did to MC and leather with the drop of MC, or with resonating silver in the April 2016 patch (thats the one that changed scribing, right?) which just swings the market for that specific item to the opposite extreme, in the end not really “fixing” much of anything.

Which is funny, because at the moment it seems that it is unbalanced across all markets.

I believe OP’s math is incorrect. It’s correct for 10 squares for a patch recipe, however the recipe gives 5 patches. So 10 squares = 5 patches = 1 insignia. This means that 60g is all you need for leather squares for all insignias. This means that an exotic set is NOT 300g. The only sets I know that are exotic over 300g are minstrel and trailblazer, due to the item for that stat selection being 8-11g each and needing 5 per insignia. (seriously it took me 255g just to buy freshwater pearls for my mesmer’s exotic minstrel ascessories!)

Ok that was a mistake, if you are spending that much gold you should have waited until you could have made that ascended
You can’t alter the free market price, but it’s simple supply and demand. If they tweaked the drop rate, they could at least increase available supply and the market would adjust. Silk used to be much more expensive, but they increased the drop rate and now it’s much more affordable.

I have ascended armor/weapons as well as an ascended trinket set. However for 100% boon duration without a sigil of concentration (don’t like swapping if I can), exotic trinkets with platinum doubloons are used. So the large amount of gold for trinkets is needed.

I’m not sure why you think it’s unbalanced. Prices might be high, but I can sell as many mats as I like and I can buy as many as I need. I know a lot of people like the idea of prices being equivalent across different professions and builds, but they never have been.
The differential is definitely about as extreme as it’s ever been; that doesn’t mean the markets are unbalanced, it just means they are unequal. ANet probably should address that; I just don’t think they should rush into changing stuff because we don’t like it.
Get 250 of thick leather. Buy 1 hardened leather. Add 5 pile of crystalline dust to it, and philosopher’s stones. And forge between 10 – 40 hardened leather in mystic forge. Recipe counts for both sections and squares
Why? Well… thick leather section is all over the place. You get it dropped pretty much anywhere. So it’s super easy to come by. And same for crystalline dust. If not just salvage 2 or 3 ecto’s. Philosopher’s stones will just cost you 1 spirit shard, so no worries there either.
You’re welcome

It seems like it. It’s always a shocker when I see a post or reply from an actual ANet person here.

Yes, and it has been for a long time. Official forums are the least likely place to get any official info from the devs.

Patches are the worst addition to this game for armor crafting. Before we just had to make the Insignia, now we need 5 patches per insignia…that’s ridiculous.

Transmuting T5 to T6 (if my quick math is correct), only is better for your wallet if you get an above average amount of T6 (25+) at the current prices.
T6 leather is only the tip of the iceberg, which is the current “leather problem”.
The low supply / high price ratio has killed armour crafting as a levelling experience for all players that came to GW2 with HoT (or later). It has slowed down ascended armour crafting a lot (while we are showers with cheap ways for trinkets) and added silly prices to some Guild Hall additions (Workshop T2 => 50 Elonian Leather, chisels needing four times the leather than metal).
Still keeps a volume of Kurzick poems ;)
You can farm and salvage how much you want, T6 leather… its rarer than actual exotic drops. The WvW synthesizers in particular are laughable when it comes to drops and that was introduced as a part of the “solution” to this.
Anet can most definetly do something about it – increase drop rates across the board.

I agree. The patches were a horrible addition to the crafting system in this game.
Edit to clarify. Patches were a kneejerk reaction to an overabundance of leather, and were one of the factors in why leather got so expensive, expensive enough for Anet to step in and mess with it yet again. They are also yet another step in crafting stuff now, which is an added annoyance. I see no benefit to them, and wouldn’t mind patches being removed from crafting entirely and just upping the amount of refined leather that recipes needed a bit to compensate. This could also probably alleviate a lot of the need for a leather farm.

I just started playing again in the last few weeks. I decided to work on moving my leather worker from 420 to max. After 60 gold and reaching 439 I realized this was not going to be a cheap or easy task. I guess I will keep playing with full exotic!

Dan

The patches were not that bad as ideas go, it’s just their requirements that are off the charts. Anet had a leather problem, and decided to fix it, but instead of making small adjustments, they just went “YOLO!” and threw everything at it all at once. Result: Anet has a leather problem.
They should have done things in phases to see how the players and economy reacted. Start with increasing the T5 refining amounts, and then see what happens. Then, if things haven’t changed a few months later, add in patches with lower quantity requirements.
But no, they had to do all the things, all at once.
Seriously, the cost of the leather has gone out of control.
Actually, I would say it’s quite under control. It’s been the price range it is now for months.
Just have the OP above send you a few stacks they will never miss it
The reason leather is so hard to get now is because 2 years ago they did “FIX” it. Due to basically all leather to drop like silk does now. It was then that any linen was hard to get and leather was falling out of the sky. So they made Cured leather sections take 4 squares instead of 3 and made both much harder to get.

I don’t know why they don’t just replace the official forums with a link to reddit and be done with it.
I fully agree that since the game came out that the conversation with the players has shifted from the ‘official’ forums to other sites like reddit and its irritating. Also, getting this leather is still completely unacceptable. I really dont understand why we are still waiting on their ‘fix’ after months, when they would just need to revert the drop and salvage nerfs from previous. It is seriously going to start hindering my guild’s hall progress.

I’d be happy if they changed the insignia recipes to need 5 cloth and 5 leather squares (down from 10) and then stopped mucking about with crafting recipes. Doing that would probably fix the problem.
I’m just glad that I fully levelled my crafting back in the day.
I was fortunate that my leatherworking was within 30 points of 500 before the nerf and my armor and tailor were already maxed. but it makes creating new gear to try out or for halls difficult/expensive and i’m not sure right now how we’re going to get all the leather we need for the guild hall restorations.

Just remove the patches and then increase the amount of leather and cloth needed in insignias slightly. Patches are just plain annoying
