Someone made a topic in Tech Support forum, saying his notebook was fried by playing GW2, (because as he said “it permanently maxed out my FPS”), but a moderator apparently decided to delete it instantly.

Now, a friend of mine had his GTX8800 card fried while playing GW2 actually, which surprised him very much. He’s convinced that fanning wasnt faulty.

These two incidents just made me wonder if there were actually more people who had their hardware unexpectedly poof when playing GW2.

I had a GTX690 (stock settings) fry on me while playing. It was replaced for free but I always play with Vertical Sync on now to keep my GPU from overheating.

How on earth did you get a GTX 690 to overheat, with stock settings, while playing Guild Wars 2? I’ve got a stock GTX 670 and it sits very comfortably at 50 C.

The GTX8800 is a relatively old card (In graphics terms) to be playing this game on. Was he attempting to play it on higher settings?

There’s no winning side for game developers. It’s up to the consumer to know how to properly use their computer. Guild Wars 2 isn’t the only game which is going to burn out your video card.

Guild Wars 2 has a built-in frame rate limiter, use it!

Also don’t forget to clean your fans and radiators from dust once in a while.

If your fans are clogged up with dust they won’t cool as effective, and the chance of burning your CPU or GPU are increased.

Unless you have some kind of high end monitor the default refresh rate is 60 anyway. So no reason not to have fps capped 60. People that burn video cards usually have a cooling problem with the card. Maybe overclocked or something and fan just can’t keep up.

I’m sure people have hardware fry while playing GW2 – and while playing other games, and while just existing, because hardware fries and/or dies sometimes – it’s part of computer reality. The fact that it occurs while playing a particular game is just chance, usually.

Any game can burn out your hardware.

Do some maintenance on your PC every once in a while. Once a year is plenty.

If his 8800 died playing this game it’s because that’s an ancient GPU so it was on it’s deathbed and it’s the minimum req to play gw2 so it was probably constantly maxed.

GW2 is very CPU intensive and doesn’t put much load on the GPU so you don’t have to get a $500 card just for this game.

I’m aware of this, but I don’t understand what someone would mean by using ‘maxed out my FPS’ as some sort of complaint.

I think by maxed out he meant that GW2 actually always tries to keep your card at maximum performance similar to a benchmark to prevent certain gpu-related power saving mechanisms from kicking in, which is sort of a “trick”, but don’t ask me about the details, I don’t really know.

i’ve fried a few video cards in my day. the 8800’s were the worst offenders. funny thing, I was always playing a game when they fried too.

the cards ran to hot and they fried. It isn’t anything to do with GW2. that just happened to be the application they were running at the time.

I’m gonna side with this… I currently don’t have a graphics card in comp in run GW2 on (well there is one, but it’s the one attached to motherboard by default that every comp in the world has) and I’ve had no issues… At all, does the game look awful? Yes, but that’s to be expected…

Things that will damage your hardware include using settings that are outside of your hardwares capabilities or neglecting to clean out your heat sinks once in a while.

while it is possible for a program to force your hardware to run outside of its limitations that is not in the case in any modern game that has graphic options you can personally adjust.

if you are having hardware issues because of gw2 it is 100% user error.

It isn’t really that GW2 is killing hardware, it is that hardware is dying while it happens to be playing GW2. In reality, it probably would have given out on just about any game if it was bound to crash sooner or later.

As for my GTX690 frying while playing GW2, I’m much more inclined to believe it was a problem with my cooling systems rather than GW2’s “demand” on my rig. After I got my card replaced it still seems to be reaching around 75 degrees even with Vsync on. If I turn off Vsync the temp climbs well over 80 and I have to turn on Vsync again to prevent any future damages to the card. If anyone else is experiencing this problem they should probably contact their manufacturer or responsible party to get their system checked out. I am having a dell rep take a look at my system soon.

This is just a case of a person not knowing how to take care of there equipment. The video card probably died because of extreme heat due to the following factors:

1. Its an older card that had dust clogging the heatsink causing bad air flow cooling. To prevent this they need to be cleaned once in a while to keep them unclogged.

2. The user was running his setting way too high without putting a limit on the FPS causing excessive heat which makes problem #1 that much worse.

3. The user failed to run GPU temp and fan moniter software to warn him if his card overheats or fan fails.

4. The user failed to use up to date drivers. Some video cards have faulty fan driver that do not increase your fan speed like they should, unless you update the driver they can fail.

People may wonder why the user manuals never say the card needs to be cleaned or you have to monitor temps on there video card. The reason behind this is the Video Card companies want your card to fail after the warranty so you buy a new one. If you do not clean it or monitor your temps most cards will last long enough for the warranty to expire.

I almost always leave vsync disabled unless it is absolutely needed like in elder scrolls games where disabling it causes game breaking bugs and never have overheating problems.

you might as well set it to vertical sync because modern flat screen monitors have very real limits that supersede your FPS rate.

I’m still sure that GW2 killed my GTX 460…. but I ain’t a techie so can’t prove it other than the fact playing Star Wars TOR and Final Fantasy XIV never did that despite playing for similar session times.

Then i have issues in areas like wvw when alot is going on. My biggest problem with vsync is when something big happens all of a sudden you card cant speed itself up fast enough to keep a constant framerate. I would rather be at a high frame rate so when that “big thing” happens i don’t have my framerate drop low enough to get stutters.

Well, I guess GW2 burnt out my GTX670 – but only in a roundabout fashion.

Not sure if New Zealand ends up withthe old stock – however after installing the 670 to cope with GW2 and TSW, after about a month I had white rain and lines across my screen which really puzzled me as I never overclock and have good fans

Taking the card back to the shop – was told that there was a known issue with the card which ended up cooking it over time.

Dont know the full details but am getting a replacement card which doesnt have the same issues.

I think it’s quite fair to say that any high end usage of that graphics card would have cooked it regardless

so far i hears from some tech pll ad my work that nvidia use old version fans of ATI
i dunno if it true if so then your not have the best cooling for your card

and GW2 can eat alot of your comp its a very heavy game
my self have a ASUS Radeon 6850 HD direct CU 1 gig

for the rest i run a old chip pentium 4 duel core 3.1 gig E8400
on top off that a new freezer cooler 13
8 gig ram

windows 7 ultimate 32 bit i no i beter can use 64 bit but its ok for now XD
and i have this thing dunno how it call in english sorry XD
and have 3 cooling fins to cool every thing inside

but stil GW2 make my deskpro warm around 40 to 70
is stil ok i think ??
