What about making harvesting tools selectable from a menu similar to the ones for selecting skills? It would, first of all, be significantly more convenient for people who have purchased unlimited tools who presently have to swap them between characters, and it would allow people with multiple skins to select which one they want to use on the fly.

Secondarily, regular harvesting tools could be turned into “charges” where the proper one for each node you’re harvesting is either automatically selected, or at least also available for selection without having to clutter your inventory depending on which zone you’re in. I know the latter would probably cause more people to only buy the particular charges they need (rather than just use the highest level everywhere), but the added convenience, especially for paying users, would be worthwhile.

The paid tools are already account bound, why not take the last step and remove the remnants of restrictions that only existed to increase sales when they were soulbound?

Think of the possibilities.

Becouse then lazy people wouldent buy 1-9 to have 1 for each char instead of moving 1

Actually I like this idea. I have multiple permanent harvesting tools that I wouldn’t mind putting on other toons if possible. Also, I have a good many frosty harvesting tools that the charge idea would take care of nicely. Please consider this one, ANet!

You know what would be even better. A tool that did all 3! I would pay highly for that tool

Well since the harvesting tools are account bound go and use your bank to transfer them to other chars.

If you somehow still got a soulbound go exchange them at black lion weapon specialist

Would be a nice QoL to have, though i do disagree with it automatically selecting the “proper” one for the node you are harvesting, if you want to use a copper tool for soft wood, go in there and swap it. A UI similar to mini’s/finishers etc would be amazing to have

That would be a fine compromise for me. I’ve seen many people who find the sets worth it at the current price, but I have to admit that paying for convenience and then still having to swap the tools is a major drawback that has no doubt contributed to me not pulling the trigger on these purchases. When you play lots of characters and switch frequently, the convenience is much less pronounced, and whether the tools auto-select or not, the first portion of the suggestion would make it an easier purchase decision.

One thing that puzzles me is that the price isn’t lowered for subsequent purchases. If you got a permanent logging axe, I’d think it’d be a small percentage that would buy additional axes for the full price. If, on the other hand you could just select them on a whim, and other skins were lowered in price after your initial purchase, some people may be more inclined to finish a collection. You’re darn near paying for the game again if you want one each of these things, let alone if you want to catch them all!

Think of the possibilities.

I decided to perform the experiment and purchase a mining pick. So far my impression is that the suspicions regarding convenience are confirmed: Even if it seems like a trivial task it’s definitely cumbersome to transfer it between alts when you’re switching characters.

Also, I noticed there was a mining pick that yielded extra materials. This seemed weird considering there are no axes or sickles with comparable functionality. It also seemed strange to introduce the item given that many people would be stuck with a “lesser” item that doesn’t harvest anything unique. In looking around at old posts it seems many were in agreement with this when it was introduced (I took a long break), but I did not stumble over any response as to whether old tools will be updated with extra material options, or if new axes or sickles will be introduced with special features. In the latter case I presume the population might feel bitter.

Does any of you know if a response was ever given to this? Given the sentiments already put in this thread, I’m more reluctant to complete an infinite set beyond the mining pick.

The Watchwork pick was, I think the third unlimited mining pick that came out during Chapter 13 of the first Living World story. I believe the chance to drop watchwork sprockets was an attempt to provide a source of spockets as watchwork creatures were slowly being phased out. But there was an uproar over a gem store item providing scarce materials with cries of “pay to win”. I think because of that ANet backed down from any other plan for other gem store gathering tools doing the same. But they weren’t going to change the item because that would create a return situation that they didn’t want to deal with. But since it’s part of a themed set, they couldn’t pull it forever.

I think what they did during the Dragon Festival which was to drop charged tools that could drop snowflakes. Of course the event itself dropped a metric ton of snowflakes which simply made the lower tiers virtually worthless and therefore the additional snowflakes dropped by these tools worthless as well. They need a new snowflake recipe or a trading event to drain the excessive supply.

We are heroes. This is what we do!
