I think one of the biggest problems with using melee in WvW currently, is that it exposes you and singles you at to targeted and spiked down by the opposing team. Everyone else is sticking back with ranged weapons, so when a single person charges forth with sword in hand, he’s basically putting a giant neon “kill me” sign on his head.

I was wondering if anyone (like a Guild or something) has tried organizing a big group of organized melee people to see how well that works in WvW. Instead of fighting back and forth on the battlements of your keep against the people attacking it, what would happen if 10-20 people with greatswords, axes, and hammer suddenly jumped down or stormed through the portal at the same time? Would such a force be terrifying to go against, or would it fall flat?

I think it’s an important question. If a group is able to prove the effectiveness of melee weapons, then it just show the current problem in melee is that people are unwilling to work together to commit to using melee weapons. On the other hand, if it fails spectacularly as a strategy, then it provides more evidence that something might need to be adjusted in WvW to make melee weapons more viable.

Overall, if I had to guess, some combination of ranged and melee weapons in an organized force would end up being best, but until someone actually tests these things out, we only have speculation.
