Has this game gone downhill?
Yes it is going down hill and the population gauges prove that. There recent patches have alienated the populations and now that the uber grinders have their 3 ascend pieces they are back with the game they love. The inside source is 25% pop left with the last patch. 2 weeks later it is at 30%+ and growing fast.
I am having more fun then ever just not in this game.I do hope they correct things but honestly dont know. Raids and trinity type mechanics are inc for Feb-March and this wont even look like what it launched as so who really knows.

For me, well the game is great and i am busy getting the mats required for the legendary GS. i have done the 100% map clearance, Full storyline on two toons and done most of the dungeons on story mode. Still lots to do.
i am loving it

I just don’t play it. It’s not fun. Guild Wars had this huge feel to it. This game feels small in comparison, even though it’s bigger. It’s probably because every inch of the map is covered in something that keeps your progress.

Game has NOT changed
The game not going downhill is subjective, so I won’t argue there. You don’t think it is, and so to you that’s true. But the game not changing is not subjective- it HAS changed. It went from a gear plateau, story driven horizontal progression game to a gear driven, vertical progression game. All with 1 patch.
That’s as big of a change as an MMO can get…
you see statement that one gear step changed it all is the same as yelling “the sky is falling”
Compare Ascended with Exotic. What does exotic have that ascended has not? Upgrade slots. If you use best jewelry to upgrade your exotics then they outgear ascendeds (that’s why ascended has better starting stats – it can not be upgraded). The only reason to get ascended is agony resistance – something used only in Fractals level 10 and high level dungeons. Where do you get ascended? In dungeons. So complaining that you need to get it (even though anyone that chooses to run those dungeons will, I ran 3 fractals and already have the mists vial, enabling me to make an ascended item) is funny, because to get it you essentially only need to do what it is used for – run dungeons. However the inability to upgrade ascendeds with anything else besides agony resistance makes them inferior to exotics, so really your game, if you don’t run fractals, has not changed a bit. So indeed, sky is not falling.

The ascended trinkets comes with stats equivalent to an ascended item with and ascended jewelry upgrade in them, AND a slot for infusion which can get stats.
@ OP. Yes. ANets’ ongoing moving of the goalposts (i.e. loot nerfs, DR etc.) are sucking the fun out of GW2 for me.
@ Mirta. You make a couple of interesting claims in some of your posts;
“low about 2000 people
med – between 5000 and 10 000 people
high is 10 000 people
full cap is about 15 000 or so me thinks.”&
“they’re being both sponsored and monitored by other companies. If they had seen such fluctuation ArenaNet would get in a lot of trouble.”
Could you provide sources please? Otherwise these claims are merely hearsay.
Many thanks.
full sponsor list: http://www.guildwars.com/events/press/partners/default.php They both sponsor and are being sponsored. I assure you, their actions are being monitored. If ArenaNet makes a wrong move and cheats they’ll lose partners. Bad for business.
The numbers themselves though I based of Planetside and the amount of people a server can hold these days. A lot of games use a similar server system and 15 000 would be the max it can hold.
The only way we could know anything close to the REAL numbers is if we all at some point filled out a poll. So far the only poll that I’ve found was this:
http://www.asuralabs.com/serverPoll.php
Close to a 1000 to 3000 people from every server filled it. However that’s it. We can only know how many people that filled it are registered to a specific server.

and yet on stats it is lower than a highest exotic with an upgrade…
It’s not going downhill, it’s just lost that new game smell. It’s settling into it’s place and getting comfortable.

Only if you fail at maths. It’s called an addition and isn’t hard.
Ascended Crystaline thing ring :
104 power
69 precision
8% crit damage
Ruby Orichalcum ring with exotic Ruby jewel :
92 power
63 precision
6% crit damage
Which part of 104, 69 and 8 is smaller than 92, 63 and 6?

How has the game gone uphill then? There are less people playing and everyone is shuffling themselves to that new dungeon. So much harder to get a group to do any PvE content that is non dungeon.
Ah! thought you were asking a question and trying to learn. Instead you have your predetermined opinion already.
To answer this quote. Every online game loses a significant portion of the initial audience. The key is to get new people to buy in, but the population will possibly never be as high as the original few weeks. Also in the beginning people play a lot, it is like a feeding frenzy. Then people start to get full and pull away and play at a more normal pace. There is also a spreading out of population, everybody that was concentrated in the beginning areas are spread throughout the game. Those things combined will reduce the numbers.
Every online game has this problem. Every online game has these kinds of thread questioning the drop in population. Every online game is considered to be dead or dying within months of opening its doors.
For instance, here is a post in guildwarsguru asking if GW1 was dying less then 2 months after it was release. As we all know, GW1 still exists many years later.
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/gw-already-dying-offi-t24342.html?t=24342&highlight=dying
I remember posts in LOTRO asking the same things right after release. LOTRO still exists and had an expansion release recently.
Hmmm... you’re making an equal comparison between LOTRO and this game... interesting....
@ Mirta. Thanks for the links. But the link you supplied for sponsors, is for Guild Wars-Prophecies etc. NOT GW2.

Sadly, from the evidence you’ve supplied, your claims remain unsubstantiated, are merely hearsay and your assurances are meaningless.
Thanks for the reply.
they’re being both sponsored and monitored by other companies. If they had seen such fluctuation ArenaNet would get in a lot of trouble. Plus these numbers fluctuate when measured nightly/ daily and on weekends depending on how many people are logged in. Today seems a busy night.
I don’t know...you might be wrong.
I bet Anet is just evil enough to have somebody sitting around every all time time every day to change how many people trigger the high and full notifications. I mean we do know they are bunch of liars, people on the internet told me so.
/end sarcasm
The game is doing great. Way more people bought it then expected, and many people are still playing it. I don’t understand why people want to wish death to any game they play, and why they will discuss to death in what way it is dying.
mmmm, yes. The same can be said about SWTOR as well and look where that game is today - nuff said. NCSoft and ANet need to come clean and stop sneaking around. 2 months and everything is nerfed into oblivion. D3 has the RMAH and we have a gem shop - oh boy do I see a pattern and similarities... Just when you thought that possibly, maybe, they would be honest with us just this one time (no grinds, no additional tiers added, etc...) we get slapped silly and reminded just how naive we really are. Sigh...

Except that they sponsor both games.
“ArenaNet is proud to work with the best partners in the gaming industry to support Guild Wars 2 and to sponsor events and contests for our fans.”
https://www.guildwars2.com/en-gb/partners/
Thanks again, but “event sponsorship & partnership” still does not equal monitoring of server population caps.
Again sadly, I’m seeing no evidence to support your claims.
The biggest downside though is how reliant it seems to be on the cash shop in design.
Hmmm... gee, yah think...

do you think that their partners allow them to do what they want to do? Cheating your own system can cost you a lot in the business world. I doubt arena.net is stupid enough to risk going broke.
I don’t think the quality of the game has gone downhill. There is still plenty to do if…you you put aside soloing for a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I love to solo. But, I also have fun grouping with the guild at times.
Just last Saturday, we had a group of low level alts in Diessa . It was great fun. No dungeons, no fractals, no pressure…just goofing off in open world doing hearts and DE’s.
The thing is…it seems that what is changing is the quantity of un-guilded players willing to to pug. And this seems to be the gist of the main gripes. The lack of people willing to join a pug. I don’t blame them, actually…I’ll solo the rest of my life before joining a group of strangers.
Find yourselves a good guild. Make some friends and group with them….sometimes. Then solo the rest of the time if you feel like it.

Thanks Mirta, but I don’t think that “event sponsorship & partnerships” are quite what you think they are in this context.
Please supply evidence to support your claims that these sponsors and partners are monitoring server populations, because I still haven’t seen any.
Your claims remain unsubstantiated.
Still enjoying a relaxed and much healthier approach to this game, compared to my gaming habits of old with other games. I still have months of content to get through at my current pace and I already feel that I have had more than my monies worth out of the purchase.
The levelling experience is great, the maps are huge and glorious and I haven’t met any nutters yet that have spoiled the experience. I seriously doubt that I am the only one enjoying it and therefor assume that the game is not going down hill
I had some weeks with no motivation to play also, but then I participated in all BWE’s and stress tests and pre-release, so I think it’s normal to take a little break. I created a new alt to play with my son and I’m enjoying the game once more on a new race and profession. I guess I just needed some time off to not be burned out and GW2 is the perfect game to come and go as we please
Game has been going downhill since Nexon..ups…“Anet” decided to prevent you from actually playing it (farm DR, loot nerfs, mindless class nerfs…) and want you to rather just buy stuff in the cash shop.
That way they also don’t have to deal with the gigaton of broken stuff like classes, skills, traits, balance, economy, pvp, everything… anymore.
They said there are 2 guys dedicated for professions – i bet there is a way bigger team closely monitoring the cash shop-economy.
Look at the positive for a moment. Sure this game is in the crapper now but in a year or so, ANet will realize their mistake, or not, very much like blizz did with D3 and start to make some positive changes. Either that, or it will just become another Warhammer Online, SWTOR, Tera Online, etc... you get my point

I haven’t really played since Assassin’s Creed 3 and Black Ops 2 came out, and I don’t even play those two games anymore. I feel completely unmotivated to play GW2 lately. I try to create a new character and get so bored I can’t get past level 10. I feel no reason to play my 80 Necro
It’s almost like you played a game a lot and then you got tired of it.
Man that never happens. Something must be wrong with the game.

It’s okay. I’ve been watching this same cycle in a different game as well. It, oddly enough, also happens right before an expansion release. It’s really weird in that it’s like a break up. People have problems recognizing that they’re bored with a game and move on, so they start picking fights until they can flame out. Just some quirk of psychology, I guess.

Perhaps, unless this game fades into oblivion like so many before it. I try to keep a current rotation of at least 3 games at any one time so perhaps I’ll be here - who’s to say...?
It’s not the game that has gone downhill, his quality is.
The first 2 months was amazing for me, lot of people in every zone, lot of people doing ALL the dungeons, i was so happy…..now it’s only a FotM farm. It takes ages to make a group to do another dungeon (if the event to open its door it’s not bugged off course).
Don’t know what to think guys. I just recorded this

you guys decide what to think of it.

Our fabulous human brains are to blame. They slowly bleed the enjoyment out of things to drive us to acquire NEW things.

Server population shows number of accounts based on that server… not concurrent players online!

Didn’t know that. I thought it is actual amount of players online atm.
I’m not sure what the fuss is about. A lot of people complaining but only in general terms, nothing specific.
When GW2 came out there was a lot of hype with it. Lots of people bought the game and played. And they played a lot. People were spending 20 – 30 or more hours a week playing. But time, and with people being people, they started playing less. They still played but not not as much. Kinda like me and my little red wagon when I was 5.
Also, after you have 2 or 3 level 80 toons do you really want to grind out another. Not me. It’s time to move on to either the after game or a new game. The after game here is WvW maybe with a little PvP thrown in. Those that leave the game can say – “I spent 60 bucks and had hundreds of hours of fun”. That’s about the cost of going out to the movies (two or three times if you can’t find a date)
So once again. What’s the big fuss. If you enjoy the game play it. If not move on. You still got your moneys worth.
Should probably combine all these “innovative” threads about how FotM and ascended gear ruined the game.

The big fuss is that we are bunch of people that enjoy the game and we are aware that some other people are not dedicated like us and will leave the game. As an effect we will have difficulties to find party and generally make game not so enjoyable when the world become empty.
