I ask because they seem so unbelievably rare. 270 hours played, at least 50 of which have been farming with 150% MF, and I have never had a single one drop. My roomate, with 200 hours and 100% MF, has not gotten one either.
That’s typical mobs, though I haven’t seen any as a chest drop either. In fact, I’ve only ever gotten a single rare in the 10-20 chests I’ve opened.
Are any of you having better luck than me?
Update: I got my very first exotic drop from a Risen mob in Orr sometime around Oct. 3rd after around 304 hours of play. Was very nice to finally get one
I’ve gotten Exotics from the rewards chests after defeating World Bosses like the Claw of Jormag, but that’s it. It also seems like the rewards for those are much better the first time you do them, as the first time I did the Claw I got 2 exotics and 2 rares with 0% MF, then subsequent times I got some crappy greens and blues with over 250% MF.
Rares on the other hand, I get fairly frequently as mob drops in Orr/Frostgorge with my MF gear on.
Oh, yeah. I’ve done like 4 hours of pvp and gotten… four or five. But that’s useless. A bit like getting chocolate milk for showing up to kindergarten. It’s definitely going to happen if you put in the time.
And not one of those has been useful to the character I got them on.
Got one in a chest from a dragon around the 200 hours mark. Thankfully it was an exotic that I can use.
I suppose they’re meant to be so rare and it’s all randomly generated loot but 1 in 200 hours is painful. Although I’m not playing it for the equips it still heart warming to know I got one.
So the less you play the more you get, is what we can take away from the info so far. Haven’t got an exotic drop from a mob or world chest. Though I did get one from the mystic forge for 4 rare bows (2 or 3 of which were bought from the TP).
I have put in 341 hours on my Warrior and I have looted only 1 Exotic from random mobs (and it was a piece I couldn’t wear). All other exotics I have obtained were either from crafting, getting 100% on maps, the karma vendors, or gambling with Mystic Forge.
Nope, no drops, just for map completes. Someone I did Arah with got one though, for the dungeon-finish reward. Come to think of it that wasn’t really a drop either.
From zone completion I received a level 78 exotic dagger I sold for 90 silver. From a chest on a temple event in Orr (I think it was Zephyr?) I got a level 78 exotic heavy helmet, sold for 50 silver.
Well, I’ve gotten a few to drop even without stacking magic find. Maybe I just got lucky, but nothing that dropped was anything I could use and I simply ended up salvaging it for runes and ectoplasm.
Over 260 hours clocked. Only one drop from a mob, from a random Orrian zombie while mapping out Malchor’s Leap. All the other exotics I pulled came from map completions, and of course none I could use.
I don’t think I have now that I think about it. But, I did manage to craft one in the Mystic Forge… three rares and a Mystic Stone got me an exotic called (I think) Rurik’s Helm or Rurik’s Helmet, something like that.

I think I looted 3 or 4 from story mode dungeons. Did only 3 of them by the way. I think 2 were from TA. Weird hearing people haven’t gotten one in so much playtime.
I rarely even get items at all most of the time. My friend gets rare and dye and all kind of cool thing about every 5 monsters we kill. But I’m lucky to even get drop every 5 monsters. And it’s usually porous skull or white “sword” and “leather jacket”.
Close to 300 hours. Do dungeons daily (that includes HoTW before you state do an 80). Yet to see a single Exotic. Kinda given up on Magic find gear since I gain money by dungeon completion anyway.
I suppose I could toss in rares into the forge though.
467 hours across all characters. 0 exotics. One time I got a rare traveler’s focus from a Jormag chest.
It really amazes me, coming from GW1, that chests don’t drop rares exclusively, with exotics being a 15% or so drop. ANet developers played too much WoW in between the two games, I guess. Actually, I don’t even think even WoW is this punishing about rewards; just upper tier items with small number variations. GW2 is literally the most unrewarding game I’ve ever played, in terms of items representing the investment you’ve put into gameplay. It’s shameful.
Even if you have 250% MF it’s not going to really help you all that much. Let’s say a mob has a 1% chance of dropping an Exotic, with 250% MF that’s only bringing it up to 3.5% chance. You’re better off wearing gear with better off/def stats so you can kill faster and live longer.
