If you swing with an auto-attack and it’s blocked or annulled does that put your auto-attack into the next move in the chain or does it only change when you actually hit a number

Your chain progresses if the hit connects with a target, not if it does damage. The game first checks if your strike connects with a valid target before factoring in invulnerability/evasion/blocks to determine if damage is done.
