I would like it added personally, for those that enjoy it we use it, for those that do not, allow an option where they cannot be challenged to a duel.

Exactly and people wonder why everyone in WvW zergs.

Learning how to fight in a friendly non competitive environment such as Dueling helps people hone in their skills for real competitive fights.

If you wish to duel someone, communicate with them, and enter a empty sPvP map/server. From there you can usually duel uninterrupted. If someone pops in, you can say you’re dueling each other, and most people will either stick around to watch or head over to another server. It’s not the best solution, but it works.

Don’t know that I would use it, but as long as you can set yourself to not even receive duel requests then I think it would be a good addition. I’m not much for PvP, but I may try that from time to time and I think it would enhance the game.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

The first thing many players ask is “Can I duel you?” (to test out the class). In GW2 you have to say “nope”.

The first thing many players ask is “Can I duel you?” (to test out the class). In GW2 you have to say “nope”.

And the first thing people say back is go to world v world, you get all unlocks and you can practice on some of the wildlife near your starting area, and then vs other players.

But really, a duel feature would be alright, though implementation is key. No dueling everywhere. Thats ugly and just leads to silly behaviors. Its been suggested that “gladiator arenas” be implemented as a place for structured “dueling”.

It has a lot of potential for practicing 1v1 fights, testing and proving where certain classes may be over powered, and ultimately it could be made into a structured “esports” competition.

And I am sure Anet could release “gladiator” themed skins and make some nice extra money from 1v1 combat arenas. Seems like a potential win all around.

It would allow very easy ways to test out balance problems of course. C’mon you have to think like a developer. We already know there are issues, but if people could very easily duel, all the problems could be figured out in a few days…then well have to wait for months to see any progress…can’t have that now can we:)

Regardless of me duelling or not, I see many reasons to implement it, and no reasons to not implement it.

The training npc’s can do this: they only engage when you want them too, they can kill you and even stomp you, but after that you just rezz full hp again.
The mechanics are there, just open them up for players too.

I personally dont care for dueling , but I would be in favor of a system that provides an arena setting that players can go to thru a gate and then be allowed to challenge and accept duels to their hearts content. Make it that way so other players don’t have to deal with challenges out in the regular game world and then sure, go for it.

If duels were implemented, a simple toggle to prevent others from inviting you to duel, would do the trick.

The thing you’re forgetting about is, PvP is not balanced around 1v1. It is balanced around groups, not solo. Thus the reason why we have abilities to support each other, and not just ourselves only. PvP is a group effort and balance is based upon that.

If you threw in duels, you would get a lot of complaints that <insert profession> is overpowered/underpowered. And people wanting buffs/nerfs based on 1v1 combat. Which would completely throw off the balance when working in a group atmosphere.

And since PvP is balanced around groups, not solo, it would actually mess everything up. While dueling a friend might be fun, it would cause nothing but complaints in the end for buffs/nerfs based on 1v1 combat.

Even though i fully agree that pvp in GW2 is as much about support and helping each other, as it is about your own damage, this doesn’t mean that there is any balance on a higher group level.

How is pvp balanced around groups than?
I never saw the logic in that.

Balanced around groups means you have to balance around any random formation of a group against any other formation of a group. Equal numbers but not equal professions or builds.
Since they let go of the trinity, every profession can make a mix of support, defenses and offensive abilities. There are no set roles, so you can’t argue that a balanced group would be one that brings x numbers of support, y number of defense, and z number of offense.
If that would be the case, than there are fixed roles, which this game says there are not.

A group balance would than be the result of individuals complementing each other. Without being forced to take specific roles.
This can be reduced to balancing 1v1 when giving each profession good acces to defense, support and offense. When a profession lacks a bit in one department, they make up in the other. Without ever fully becoming too strong in either role.

GW2 if anything, is going for balance 1v1 from all the official comments on pvp.
Why else would there be a post about guardian bunkers being too strong, as well as discussing their bursty counter (or not)?

If balance was around groups, than bunker guardians would not be an issue, neither would burst classes be. Just bring the same ammount of those in your group, and you have balance.
It could even lead to buffing others to the same level of burst, or the same level of bunkering… just to throw in a few group choices for fun.

‘Balanced for groups’ smells like allowing some to be stronger than others, since they simply are a part of a group. GW2 stepped away from the trinity and set roles, I’m quite sure they didn’t intend to create that in pvp either.

I’m torn.

Dueling is a good feature. However, as soon as it’s implemented you get people whining that every setup isn’t balanced 1 vs 1.

And currently there’s no need for them to be, all the forms of PvP are team based, not 1 vs 1.

How many skill challenges are the same old tired “hey, I’m a powerful member of the Pact/Seraph/Wardens/etc, I dare you to duel me.”

That it’s such an integral part of the PvE game and yet the devs left it out makes you think someone high up got his feelers hurt too many times by duels. Cuz dueling’s exclusion just doesn’t make sense.

Duels are for wusses. Go PvP.

Duel spam is annoying. Duel requests are annoying.

When this has previously come up, someone suggested duels only be doable in the mists or somewhere that others players don’t have to endure the idiocy. That would be a reasonable tradeoff, sort of. No particular reason people in the mists should be punished though.

Duels were a fine idea in say, ten year old games that had no other on-demand PvP.

Guild Wars 2 has two forms of on-demand PvP, making duelling entirely unnecessary.

…or at least, unnecessary to those who aren’t afraid of actual PvP.

WvW / PvP is great if you want to see if you are better than some random guy on a server you have never heard of.

Not so good to see if you can beat your friend / guildie in an even fight. You need duels for that.

Dueling has its place, but unless the game is specifically balanced for 1 vs 1 it’s debatable how worthwhile it is.

I was suprised that they didn’t have this in game.
It doesn’t matter if the game isn’t balanced around 1v1 fights, just having the option to duel others for fun would be very much welcome.
An option to auto decline duels would also be needed.

Wrong. To implement a duelling system in a game world that is 100% pve centric would mean a redesign of the game engine. If you want pvp, then head to the pvp zones.

Besides, Arenanet have said since the game was announced and all through gw1 that they have no intentions of allowing pvp in the pve game world. Thats why they designed a huge Pvp system that is separate from the regular game.

Obviously dueling has it’s uses. It would be a valuable tool for anyone trying to prepare for pvp. Sure there are oversensitive people that fear it, but that’s no reason not to have it.

Like many good suggestions, the white knights swoop in and say it’s not needed. Blind defenders are the worst thing to happen to this game. It’s probably a big reason the game ended being such a shallow mess. A lot of the problems, the hollow shells of classes we are forced to work with for example, were brougt up during beta but the “EVERYTHING IS PERFECT” crowd shot down any useful criticism. Thus, we have Zerg Wars. A mindless, easy, stream lined to oblivion theme park.

A change being required and the game engine needing a re-write are 2 very different things…

And while dueling is technically PvP, it’s also 100% consensual PvP, not forced on helpless PvErs
