Having difficulty making money with 120% magic find...
8 gold? You are the 1%.
hes not wrong. money is hard to earn just from the lack of “jobs” you could do in other rpgs. there is nothing worth farming or completing because there is no such thing as good loot in this game.
Get better at tagging mobs. No, seriously. Tailor your spec towards being able to frontload a bunch of AoE damage and hope you’re playing a class that can do that semi-effectively. When you hit the anti-farm code, I guess you can go do something else for awhile. When I was doing that stuff I tended to just log out. You can make some okay money doing Orr events over and over. It isn’t super fast, it’s pretty boring, and it goes against the mission statement of there being no competition between players, but other than becoming an auction house baron there aren’t a whole lot of options.
You should go farming for Fine crafting mats. Gets you greens and rares just as often, plus you get the cash that comes with the crafting materials.
Making money in this game is getting harder and harder with all of these “no botting” patches that lower rewards for events completed consecutively. I have a level 80 and I had to sell almost all of my crafting supplies just to get the level 60 book. That is the most money I have ever had.
How did you make 8g without buying 50 dollars worth of gems?
You are supposed to by Gems from the store and turn them into gold.
Thats what ArenaNet has planned all along.
Thats how they make money with no monthly fee.
And that is what i as very afraid of……

This is very wrong. I have friends who are holding on to 200g just by playing the market, as in Trading Post, buying low and selling high.
Do the dynamic Event AoE spam fest in Orr. Chain run them until the anti-farm codes kick in, then wait and repeat. I run about 170ish% and usually get 1 or 2 yellows per event. Salvage the whites, and vendor the blues and greens (only because the TP is FULL of most blues and greens and only a few copper above vendor, meaning you will make less by posting them), i can make about 2g per hour this way, not fast, but its better than nothing and get a small fraction of the 1 Million karma I am going to need. =P When they stop dropping, you have reached the anti-farm code limit.
Keep in mind, 100% only means say the mob has a drop rate of 1% on rares (made up number), having 100% would only make the same mob have a 2% chance.

Oh good. Now I, the person with no economics background/know-how, can make money in a single way! YAY! You need money to make money and it is now nearly impossible to make more money than you spend on waypoints and armor repair.

I had 3.5g sitting in my bank at level 60 (after spending almost 5g on unlocking character slots), I don’t know how you can not have at least 2g by level 80.

If everybody did this, then nobody could do this. It also kind of goes against the whole “playing the game” thing when you’re better off just staring down the TP UI, trying to screw over your fellow players before anyone else can. Makes me think of another recent release that was heavily criticized for something similar…

If gold making is so easy, everyone would be hoarding hundreds of gold and crash the economy. Either you are willing to find your own way of making them, or you just spend on what you can afford. Why whine when almost everyone is still trying to find a way to get richer?
if your a gambling man….gamble a gold or 2 worth of items in the mystic forge get lucky profit…thats always fun if you got a gold or 2 to spare… other than that keep up farming and rocking the crafting

Mystic forge made me a very broke man….

I, honestly, have no idea how you had that much money. I did EVERYTHING and completed every single map leading up to the one I was in (plus a few others) and had fought in everything I ever found. I didn’t spend money on everything and I didn’t even spend that much on armor repair (except the 25s I probably spent on my first trip through AC). I was even at the point where I just sold everything instead of salvaging it because I couldn’t afford to buy this one green piece to update my armor for the first time in 10 levels (I COULD afford it but I never had enough money to keep up all of the teleports and random gold sinks).
And, I NEVER go positive with the mystic forge. I just hate it. Too random for me and I have dreadful luck.
Exactly what are you spending your money on where 8g isn’t enough?

Gambling is not a good way to make profit. I am assuming 90% of people here have a REAL job, and would take having a REAL job over going to a casino and attempting to make a profit off losing money.
For instance. You make 4 rare 76+ weapons, plop them into the mystic forge, you have a 20% chance of getting an exotic.
So I did the calculations, it’s around 1 gold per set to make. So 20% of the time you should get an exotic, there will be times where you are on a win streak and times you’re on a lose streak. Statistically speaking, if you DO in fact get the exotic you can sell it for 2-3 gold in a couple of days.
So we will do a little test here. I do this trick 10 times, costing me 10 gold, and I should get around 2-3 exotics for it (average). I will make back 6-9 gold in 3 days. You may get lucky and no one will undercut you if you put your item up matching lowest seller, and it may sell sooner rather than later.
I have made 9 exotics doing this method, each time it took days to get my investment back and I actually was slowly losing money, despite the fact at the beginning I was having an amazing win streak.
Gambling using the mystic forge is a horrible idea if you’re trying to make money. The only reason you should be using the mystic forge is to try to get the legendary base item which is 5% chance off of combining 4 exotics and a 1% chance if you’re using rares.
I had 15g by the time I hit lvl 80
Once I hit about 45-50 I only used armor from drops and storyline quests. I never bought a single piece of armor or anything from the AH.
I guess it’s easier for some people but not sure.

I never bought anything on the AH since it was down even when I was level 80. The highest amount of gold I ever had was 14g.
Yeah I’ve played every single day since early start. I should not have only 14gold for it.
People who have 100+ gold did it by abusing the Trading Post, buying low selling high. Not everyone can do this and the profits are so minimal since you can wait all day for the perfect opportunity to buy low and sell high but guess what, if you do not sell what you bought within the first hour you will be undercut and you will not make your money back for days.
This is not a good way to make money, I don’t care what anyone says. The economy is a pile of rotting corpses right now. 4 million people using the trading post, it will be near impossible to use this trick if everyone did it. That’s why there needs to be multiple avenues one may go down. Those avenues are now blocked off.
I do not like feeling that there is no reason to play this game anymore. Having a goal and trying to achieve it is the purpose, so I understand why legendaries are super hard to get, but getting something that literally just costs gold to get (not legendaries) should not take hundreds of hours to get, and that was BEFORE they nerfed absolutely everything in the game.
I’m close to 4g at level 31.
And that’s after buying a set of good looking level 6o armour & weapons to transmute to appearance onto my level 25 gear.
I decided that since I’m buying gear on the TP rather than crafting it, I might as well sell the crafting materials that I have gathered so far. Even discounting the amount I invested to get to around 50 armour / weapon crafting I still sold enough to earn about 3g.

“Buying low & selling high” is not abusing the TP.
It’s economics 101. It’s one of the most basic of the principles of earning money.
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!
I think by the time I hit I 80 I had earned about 21 gold. Playing the tp is dificuly sometimes because nobody want to actually pay a decent price for crafting mats. Some people do but for the most part you see like 3 orders placed for 500 of of a lvl 400 mat and they wanna pay 40 copper. Well I will put up an amount for 1 silver each. Which i think is more then fair for lvl 400 smithing material. then next thing you know 20 other people are selling 2000 of the same mat for 1 copper above order price. It`s like WTF! I am losing money trying to sell these mats becuase everyone just undercuts everyone else. You know the system is kitten up when you see an item that sells for 10 copper to a vendor is being ordered for 5 copper per and you see a bunch of sellers with listings for 6 copper per !
The only time i make decent coin is when i get a gold drop and I can sell it on the tp for 13-20 silver. and I may get 2-3 golds a week if I am lucky. Nobody wants the blues and most of the greens are ordered for below vendor cost on my server and there are 100`s of listing of the same items for sale for one copper above vendor value. It don`t make sense.
Stupid quote button refuses to appear so here goes.

It may be so, but I do hate it with he bottom of my heart. This is a game and I don’t understand the need of hoarding imaginary* money in MMO’s. I craft and sell stuff, but not for profits. When this come more and more apparent it just makes me stop crafting when I can’t sell affordable things, including nice drops I might not need, to people that actually would use them. Instead they go to greedy people for reselling.
Most money I have had was maybe somewhere over 3gold. But that’s mainly because I tend to use it what I have and it doesn’t really bother me to not have awesome amounts of money. I get by, still half green equipment, no exotics and really not a whole lot of plans for bigger purchases anyway.
*Though not as imaginary as in other MMO’s since it can save you buying gems for real money which I have done also, but it’s part of the continued income for the game so it’s bit more difficult to compare.
Keeping inflation in check would be fine, if they didn’t also ensure that the ridiculously high costs for all level 80 gear wasn’t so insanely inflated. They are forcing people to find ways to maximize money, just to be able to acquire the level 80 gear that was supposed to be “fairly easy” to achieve with “no end game gear grind for stats, only skins”. Then, if people find a way to actually afford their level 80 gear with out having to log another 100 hours once they reach the cap to do so, they nerf those avenues.
Look. I want a balanced economy, so if there was a loophole that allowed earning gold at a much higher rate than doing other things in the game, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
The problem is that the pricing of level 80 Exotics is completely unreasonable, people knew they were completely unreasonable, but the people who wanted to cut Arenanet some slack were able to point to dungeon runs as a reasonable path to earning the money needed for their exotics. Now, with that avenue nerfed, they not only are forced to grind and grind and grind for gear that was supposed to be “fairly easy to obtain”, but a lot of those people feel like idiots for telling others who complained about the prices to “Learn to Play”. Double betrayal.
The fact that the earning power of characters only progresses slowly, based on level, would be good for the economy, if Arenanet hadn’t broken the promise that there would be no grind for max stat level 80 gear, but only for rare skins.
It should not take more than 20 hours after reaching the cap to get that gear. After that, the grind for skins can be adjusted so that people find it challenging, but not completely frustrating or even futile and life will go on.
Given all the costs at level 80, earning 1 gold per hour does not seem unreasonable. If it’s meant to be a lot less than that, then level 80 costs; waypoints, repairs, gear, etc… all need to be cut significantly.

Ah you got me there, economics 101. It’s not abusing.
I would sit at the Trading post, calculating what material would offer the best profit (which would only be about 5-10% profit) and I would try to buy low and sell high.
It doesn’t work. Ever. Actually right now I have 500 sharp claws on the Trading post that I can’t take down because if I did I would literally lose money because people will NOT stop undercutting. It’s not just that one material, it’s every kitten thing on the trading post.
Has anyone here made 200 gold from the Trading Post in the past week? Or was it basically the first week after the trading post decided it would work when the prices were too erratic for anything to be priced correctly?
If you have level 80 exotic gear, there is absolutely no reason to get more gold, it’s useless to have it past that. Do something else, what? I don’t know, “there is plenty of things to do!”
