Heart Quests Need Looking At
Sometimes you have to go far away from the “heart NPC” to find more mobs. I think the one you’re talking about is in Queensdale, you can go to the cave to find more bandits.
Or be patient and an event will spawn, which usually results in completing the heart by itself.
Have you tried working on one of the other ways to progress the Heart while you wait for the bushes to reset?
nearly all Hearts have 2-3 different activities that allow you to progress. In the case of ‘Help Cassie around the moa ranch’(which sounds like the one you’re describing) you can search bushes, escort the baby moas, go into the bandit hideout to kill bandits and pick up feed to bring back to Cassie.
Also, most Hearts have events happen around them, and progress in the event usually progresses the Heart too.

I was doing some hearts whilst levelling a new character and I think some hearts might be broken – maybe related to the NPE?
For example, the Seraph’s Landing one in Harathi Hinterlands http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Protect_Seraph%27s_Landing
I could pick up the chicken feed but couldn’t seem to feed any animals with it. It also said to give something to some lionguard sergeant but I couldn’t find one (the heart NPC was a lieutenant but they wouldnt take anything either). The only task that seemed to contribute to the heart was killing bandits on the docks – but they spawned quite slowly. And there weren’t any fires to put out with the water buckets.
There were also a few other hearts wih similar problems.

The OP has a point.
I was doing a heart quest at the portal to Rhand at Diessa. The heart was dead most of the time and you need to wait for event to spawn AND get lucky to kill enough mobs fast enough before other players. The quest has no alternative.
I know one heart that matches the OP’s description perfectly is the (level 19) heart NE at The Wendon Steps in Brisban Wilds. I felt I was constantly waiting around for bandits to spawn and “steal” Seraph supplies. And if there wasn’t any big event going on, it seemed like it took 40 seconds or so just for each bandit to spawn only to finish that heart.
I’d like to suggest this one gets an increased mob spawn rate if possible.
Aside from the ones already listed, this one in particular just had me twiddling my thumbs just trying finish.

This is the one I was thinking of as well. They just need to put in one thing that players can do between Flame Legion appearances and it would be a lot better.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

I’ve done that one recently. I don’t remember any issues with feeding the chicken. You can also use the trebs on the centaur buildings

There are bandit and bandit supplies further west.
The one you are working on also includes inside the cave. If you need help you can message me in game. Be glad to help you out.
This sounds like the heart where you have to also look for lost moas in the shrubbery (I don’t even want to go into the innuendo behind looking for birds in the bushes). If it is that one, then there is a cave nearby where you can go in a ways and take out some bandits.

There are flame legion on the lower level that you can still attack.
Some hearts are definitely more difficult to complete than others. Why some of them need to be so slow if there’s no DE going on in the immediate area, I’ll never know. Hearts that are too dependent on a DE going on is not a great idea overall.

I last tried to complete this last night and there were no flame legion anywhere within the heart zone.

There should be a couple that spawn when you get close to a particular spot but those aren’t going to get you much progress in the heart either.

That’s the one exactly.
I went as far as I could, like until the heart disappeared, then went back in the other directions as far as I could. Finally an event spawned that gave me what I needed but my point is, that it’s not fun WAITING. Have more things to do or more mobs to tag.

I concur. As I mention in my post above, it’s not fun just waiting around. If you’re designing the quests, they shouldn’t be dependent on a random event spawning in order to complete them, unless said event can easily be started by anyone at any time.
Also, all hearts should offer at least 2-3 alternative ways to progress the bar. Most do, but there are some notable exceptions (already mentioned Diessa’s Rhand heart, and the infamous Blazeridge stealth flag running one, are the two that immediately come to mind).

Yeah, I hate that stealth flag heart so much. I also hate the heart in Sparkfly Fen with the Hylek grubs. You have to use the poison machines to knock over the termite hills and carry grubs to the fire pit but you can’t get the cooked grubs out of the fire even though it says you can.
Another annoying heart is the one in Plains of Ashford where you have to use a special rifle to catch minotaurs and drakes. It says you can fight them in the pit, but you can’t. Before the NPE, though, we could and it was a fast way to get the heart done. Now it takes forever.
There is indeed a bunch of hearts without enough things to do and they’re tedious and boring.

Is that’s what is wrong with it? I tried to do this a couple of weeks ago and thought it was broken. kitten .

I am completing maps on my ranger, and I noticed something more and more. When doing heart quests, there is sometimes (I won’t say often) a quest where there’s just not enough things to do.
It’s true. But there’s zero chance ArenaNet will fix that. They already mentioned they won’t overhaul old content, because they assume that people will focus on new content and so they can leave the old broken.
It’s the same kind of logic they used when talking about Charr armor. A lot of it is broken, but ArenaNet said they won’t fix said armor because few players have Charr characters, so it’s not worth their time. Meanwhile, guess why few players have Charr characters? Perhaps the ugly armors have something to do with it?

It has another problem. Tried doing it lately on my lvl 80 ele. For the capture skill to work you need to bring the mobs below 50% hp first, but most of the time i ended up oneshotting them with the rifle’s weakest attack. In the end had to remove accesories to reduce the damage.

Thanks for the warning. I think I need this one for the character I’m doing world completion on so he’d do the same thing.

Agree on all counts. I really hope ANet does look at this stuff, because new players have to go through it (well, if they want to complete maps at least). It’s hard enough keeping new players engaged thanks to the NPE, so I think that they really don’t do the game justice to leave in stuff like this.

I’ve completed the heart at least three times without the event active and it took less than 5 minutes. Much less time than it took to do the stealth one in Blazeridge.

Good for you. If you can share how exactly to do it without interacting with a single thing then please do.
I’m not making this up. There was nothing there until events spawned.

You sure?
They need to have a highlighted area over the map showing which area counts for the quest. Sometimes I don’t even know which area counts and have to walk around the entire place to find out.
Also, some places have poor area allocation, like the heart quest near Fort Salma. They said “kill Centaurs”, yeh sounds easy, except there wasnt a single centaur nearby. Then I finally found some but they’re out of the quest range, and I had to aggro them into the area to get it counted.

Of course I’m sure! I’ve done the heart maybe 20 times over the last two years and never had a problem, events up or not. Until last night. Unless that screen shot was taken at the time I was in the area, on the same map instance as mine, then it’s meaningless to my recent experience.

Honestly, most of the hearts I hated got fixed by the NPE.

You can kill centaurs in the ruins across the bridge as well.
Hearts were the worst part about map completion when I did it. In order to break away from the “quest” mindset most MMOs have, Anet inevitably created another version of the same repetitive model. xD
Isle of Janthir
Sometimes, the hearts wont mention some things that will add to it too. Like reviving fallen solider in it, or killing enemys in it range too. So far, with 60% of the map completed I have only ran into one slow heart, and I believe it was because we owned the area which caused the enemy spawn rate to be low and thier “toys” you can destory to not be there too. It just took about 15minutes for my partner and I to earn it and move on, no big deal really. Not saying there is no problem, just sometimes you have to look for a solution to, as it be kinda bad if all hearts are easy.

Actually, a normal quests system would have been a much better system. It opens up so much room for creativity and interesting stuffs. With the hearts system you can’t have chain side quests, which was what I really liked in Aion, where there were many really interesting side stories.
And heart quests are almost all about killing mobs and pressing a button on objects.
Hearts are bog standard “kill 10 rats” quests, only with a fuzzy slider instead of a plain and simple number to fill up.
And recently I revisited Snowden Drifts and had similar problems there that seem to have gotten worse during my hiatus.
Or I simply forgot how bad it was.
There was nothing there.
Can back this up. I just went through this one and came in near the end of an event so didn’t complete the heart. Went searching for random mobs to kill and had one pop up. So yes, while occasionally there are mobs that pop up, they are very few and far between. There is not a reliable way to advance this heart aside from the event.

That one is very easy, just run around and F all the spike traps.
