Hearts or Edge of The Mists?
Imo Edge Of The Mist, plus lots of loot, but i prefer leveling through normal maps especially when it is your first time playing the game
If you want pure xp, grab every booster possible and efficiently kill mobs that have soaked up lots of xp during off-peak hours. Otherwise, EotM can be unreliable depending on your zerg and what the enemies are doing.
EoTM is full of objectives which are “events” so you do essentially get loot and exp from completing the event.
HoTM is pure pvp, however with pvp reward tracks you can get level up scrolls by playing pvp.
Personally I would just level normally in mapping to get to know your class. EoTM is brainless farm that is good for alt characters after you know the game. HoTM is the lobby for joining pvp games, and i wouldn’t play them until u learn more about your class.
EOTM has the added benefit of awarding badges which you can use to buy exotic 80 level armor once you are at 80. (just make sure you know what you want as the armor cant be salvaged)
Hearts are an awful way to level up. They are both slow and boring.
EOTM is faster though arguably duller.
I would recommend leveling by exploring, gathering WPs, PoIs, and easy Vistas. Gather and kill along the way while doing every Dynamic Event you can and you’ll level quickly.
Get a few friends together and you’ll see more events and get more experience doing stuff.
Edit: I should mention if you’re only level 20, STAY AWAY FROM EOTM. You’ll hit 80 and know nothing about your class. The Guild Wars 2 subreddit has a ton of guides and suggestions as well.

Well I was thinking that I will level with EoTM most of the time or so, I will be exploring the map aswell such as discovering skill points/world bosses/events/exploring new wp and more but probably not going to do a lot of hearts because as you said some of them are exremely boring and uninteresting. I know most of engineer’s skills/builds/utilities/finisher/etc I already havve a build in mind. I am fammiliar with the basics of other classes, etc. I did a lot of research for other classes and espcially eng this weekend in vacation, where I can not play GW for the time being.
Do you think its fine if I start now? if not when should I try EoTM since Im mostly iterested in the loot and XP.
I would suggest you combine sPvP, EoTM, exploring, crafting and dailies to level. That way you won’t be utterly fed up with any one part of the game when you’re level 80.
Also, do consider that rushing to 80 is not worth it, because it doesn’t magically open up tons of content for you. Take your time and savor the journey.
Oh and also worth to note that in EoTM there is a high chance you’ll encounter fully leveled and geared lvl 80 characters who will steamroll your upleveled zerg. Don’t sweat over it. There is no monetary loss in dying, so just WP and get back to the saddle.
I only suggest grinding EOTM for levels for experienced players looking to level their third or fourth toon. You can try it whenever you like, but just know that it’s a really awful way to play the game. (In my opinion, anyhow.)
You’ve probably heard from somebody that it’s the “best way to level” – this person probably has 2000 hours in the game and 5+ level 80s. Keep in mind that many people don’t understand the concept of giving different advice to people in different places.
I don’t tell my friends making minimum wage that they should try this $100 bottle of scotch, you know?

EotM is certainly more rewarding and faster IF you get with a good Commander AND know what you are doing (per above…you shouldn’t do this with your first (or even 2nd) character).
Hearts can get you good XP, but map clearing (that includes Hearts) while “yellow edge farming” can get you more and does not entail even semi-organized interaction with other players…..you can do it at your own pace.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Fastest method to level from XP point of view would be if you have a few boosters on (Bday booster, XP booster, Killstreak booster) and you go out and kill yellow mobs (as most ignore them and thus bonus XP is likely to be higher). But you have to keep moving, you can’t kill the same group over and over as the bonus XP decreases to nothing eventually. This is faster than EoTM even but requires more than mindless zerg training, which many like, plus you get less loot.
If you don’t have any boosters then EoTM is fastest to level IMO. Then again I’ve never actually sat down and tried to level via Tomes from PvP. I just save them at the moment, so who knows. All I know is that you can level from 20-80 in under 24hrs play time in EoTM (I always use level 20 scroll).
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
purely personal experience.
2 of the last characters I leveled up I did both way. One was done entirely in Edge of the Mist, another entirely map completion.
class was Necromancer.
Used a Level 20 Scroll.
Only booster active was a Birthday booster
Reached 80 on both before the booster ran out.
So,
If you are looking for a fast beat level set up with intentions of getting to 80 fast. I would recommend when you log into your new thing. head straight to Edge of the mists, and see if there is a semi intelligent group running. If so, run there till it ends or you get bored. If there is not a group running or you have succeeded in boring yourself. then grab yourself a map and run it.
Suggestion though.
If you plan on doing WvW. I would suggest spending more time in Edge than normal maps. Just so you have a better idea of how your class plays in that environment. If you do not intent to use them for WvW for the time being. I would spend more time on the regular maps so you have a better understanding on how to play it there.
