I played the game for the first 2 months after release but purely for pvp. I now want to return to the game but for pve pvp and wvw all casually. Although i am casual i enjoy being competitive which leads to my question:

Which professions have some fun builds which can compete dps wise but also provide some grp support such as shouts venom aura or elixirs? I would prefer play the same build for all aspects of the game. I enjoy playing a class people are happy to be grouped with not only for damage but support as well.

Also, as a side question how would you rate the overall success of this game? As well as do you see it as the type of game which will continuously improve or sooner than later die off and be forgotten? To put it into perspective how would you rate its success and player base vs games like rift or swtor or even wow if you dare.

Everybody is always happy to see a guardian in their group. Except for extreme PVE world records (which you run in private groups anyways), they are always in demand and can provide both DPS and support. There will always be people that say that a guardian does less damage than this class or that one. While that is true, in all cases, guardians are in the upper levels of choice. Regarding the support, guardians have a really nice set of utils that are very well in demand. For pure dps, I suggest you take a full zerker gear and learn to dodge properly. If you can’t dodge in this game, you can’t play.

Regarding WvW, guardians are also in high demands. They can survive and still deal decent damages, but in WvW, it’s mostly for their utilities combined to their overall damages that they are wanted. For WvW, you have two choices. Either you really max out your build for a WvW build or you take your PVE build and simply put soldier’s gear on. I do the latter without bothering with WvW-specific traits and I’m quite happy with it.

I have no precise idea about PvP, but from what I played (quite little I’m afraid), guardians aren’t top tier, but are still good.

TL;DR: By far, guardians is the most balanced profession in the game.

Rangers are great just shoot and kite shoot and kite.

OP it depends on how you like to play.
Do you like easy mechanics that are easy to pick up/ more complicated?
Do you like to play interesting builds or are you into min/maxing?

That statement scream for a Guardian.

I have a level 80 Guardian, most wouldn’t consider me a hardcore player since I’m extremely time-constricted on play. Lately I’ve been working on leveling a thief. (took a break for a few months as well)

The difference between the classes for me is the feel you get while playing them.

Guardian being slow, methodical, and simple, with many valid build combinations and many useful skills. My guardian does medium-damage, can take a hit, and is excellent at providing passive buffs and whatever healing this game allows from a support character (which isn’t much).

I found the thief can’t take a hit in melee (no, I didn’t come to this conclusion wearing all zerker gear), can move around the battlefield like a ******-******. Feels like a higher difficulty rating, if you come into a pvp match with dagger-dagger and use the wrong skill against a warrior you’ll be down in two hits. Use the right skills and they won’t be able to touch you. Can provide support, but it is much less of an emphasis. Ranged gear is lower range than other classes but combined with their mobility is extremely effective.

Ranger — I usually like rangers, something is off about the ranger in this game.

Engineer — more of a nieche character, I have one at level 20, they’re extremely neat to play, but they’re such a mishmash of crap that I’d say only play one if you know you want to play one.

Mesmer — Higher degree of difficulty, very interesting playstyle, kind of a mix between the specialization of an engineer and the high-risk high-reward of a thief. If you love clones, play this, you cant play a Mesmer without clones, all their powerful skills are tied to them.

Necromancer, Elementalist — No interest. If you like casters you’d know more about these than I do. I like how the elementalist has (25?) spells per weapon, but I just can’t bring myself to play a magic-only class.

Warrior — Haven’t played one (such a basic concept…) — hit like trucks, hard to take down, and their banners/shouts provide great support. Basically they’re a guardian with more damage, comparable support, and less healing.

From what you say, I would say, Mesmer

It is very versatile you can literally pick how you want to play it.
It has great utility, welcome everywhere.
Very unique and fun.

DO NOT PICK RANGER. WARNING DO NOT PICK RANGER

look at the ranger forums and you’ll see why:

-bad in PvP
-bad in WvWvW
-lowest DPS
-bad pet AI
-list goes on forever, been a year and nothing was fixed

oh and people actually kick out rangers in dungeons

I do love my Ranger- in fact she is my goto character, there is nothing I won’t do on her.
From what the OP said though it doesn’t sound like what he wants.

Who knows rangers may get all the attention and get all the buffs and become “power rangers”.

I have 5 profs at 80 atm including ranger. And i dare to say ranger is by far my least favourite. It was my first main and it was imo so boring that i stopped playing and whent back to wow due to it. Especially the long and shortbow playstyle is so zzzzz.

Once i came back and tried some other profs including my current main; engineer, i found out there are some classes in this game with a lot of depth and an interesting playstyle.

And thats my advice aswell. Play an engineer and never look back. It starts off quite simple but once you get full acces to all kits and get full control over your build its amazing.

^^Engineers are amazing – there is nothing quite like them ^^
but kind of like Mesmers they are late bloomers- you can only really see the potential at the later levels.
They are fun to play from the start though

Guardian for sure. They’re top 3 in every area of the game.

Spare yourself any future pain, go with Warrior.

There was your problem. LB and SB are really easy weapons to use to the point where it gets boring just using them. Try using the melee weapons (which will keep you on your toes), or do things with traps. Those take more depth and skill to use well and survive with.
