Hey GW2 gang,

I’m looking to replace my aging computer in 2 or 3 months and was wondering what you all might recommend. The cheaper the better but I want a system that can run GW2 great even when its a WvW zergfest particle effects-palooza! I want a system that will be a great gaming system for a few years too, so want a good vcard and cpu.

I’m looking at the Alienware Aurora but get mixed reviews on Alienware. Some praise them, some say avoid them, so what is the story?

Otherwise, I’m thinking of custom-built via either newegg.com or ibuypower.com. Any recommendations there? So many video cards, so even just tips on chosing one of those would rock.

What is your budget?

A custom build $700 system will allow you to play most modern game with modest fps.

$1000 will allow you to play any game with high settings/ultra in pretty high resolution.

$1500+ will ensure maximum performance and future proof the system.

Never buy a Alienware. They are extremely expensive for what you get and they have terrible cable management and overheating problems.

If you can tell me what you have, what ur budget is, and how you intent to use the system then I can create a better list. Do you already own monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc? Do you need a new power supply,Rams, storage, optical drive or can you salvage it from your current system?

This needs to be said first and warrants capslock: DO NOT BUY ALIENWARE!
Their hardware should be alright, but it’s enormously, incredibly, ridiculously overpriced. Stay away.

How much are you willing to spend?
Do you want to overclock the CPU?

Obviously custom-built is always the best choice, much better price/performance.
Should be a lot of great tips/suggestions at: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/33-computer-buying-building/

IT’S A SWORD. THEY’RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.

I have to agree with this, Alienware is good as far as computing power goes but it costs more due to the cosmetics that go with it. I got an Asus G74S, standard package, for a bit over 1k and it’s able to handle max graphics no problem. However if you’re willing to put a bit of work into a tower it’d be a lot cheaper and probably more powerful. Just make sure the cooling system is up to par.

you should visit a site such as gamespot if you want people to build you a gaming rig. here, most are playing on some $500 overpriced BestBuy garbage.

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

Great info, thanks guys. I’ll be configuring a system on ibuypower or newegg as they both seem to offer the best customization.

Just realise that the best computer in the world is no guarantee for good gameplay, especially in zergfests. There is much more at play than just your computer.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

Nothing with and AMD, ArenaNet don’t like these.
Don’t buy this PC for GW2 only, and a lagfree gameplay is pretty much impossible right now(if you dont want to buy a 1500€+, 0 optimization over the past year (culling and the effect-thing-whatever, did nothing).
