Heritage light armor as a pvp reward?!
It’s more than likely a placeholder, no need to be worried till it’s known for sure.
Considering that PvP players can have all the HoM ranger pets, including the 30 point Black Widow Spider even though they have zero HoM points, this is nothing new.
ANet may give it to you.
I would love to be able to get the heritage armor without having to buy a whole other game. Light armors that aren’t some crazy frilly fashion show are in extremely short supply.
Having some meaningful carryover for people who really played the hell out of the first game is great an all, but it doesn’t seem right to hold one of the only practical looking armor skins hostage that way.

Other than it was promised to Guild Wars 1 vets who supported the game by playing, purchasing and word of mouth to other people, I wouldn’t really care. However the fact that they were to be unique, exclusive rewards to the Guild Wars 1 players and now being handed out to anyone who bought a $10 discount version, doesn’t sit so well with me.

“The Hall is the reward system that allows players of the original game to access unique rewards for use in Guild Wars 2.”
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Hall_of_Monuments
“Players reaching a high enough rank in their Hall of Monuments will unlock exclusive rewards, including titles, companions, armor, weapons and miniatures:”
“The Hall of Monuments was introduced in Eye of the North to facilitate players transferring their accomplishments to Guild Wars 2 from their original Guild Wars account.”

If you read the gw2 wiki page about that kitten ed spider, you would know why those are available in PvP.
They could have made a different set of pets with the same abilities, PvP exclusive, for those that want to use two of the same type and restricted the HoM pets to those that had the HoM rewards. That way PvP people could have had two pets of the same type if they wanted that, PvP balance would have been assured since a ranger can only use two pets at a time and the HoM rewards would have been respected.

Why has it taken 3 years for it to rise to the surface though?
It’s about PvP balance that all the pets are available so those who earned their HoM pets could use them in PvP. I’d be gutted if I earned pets in gw1 and couldn’t use them in my prefered game mode.
We’re talking about pets that wouldn’t be in gw2 if it wasn’t for HoM. Not pvp/pve exclusives, this is irrelevant to the actual reason everyone can use these pets in pvp.

I just checked my steam, and it would take a ~$30-40 investment (depending on if I buy the trilogy or just the base game), plus several hours of playing a game I have no real interest in for me to get that armor.
I have absolutely no interest in trying to take anything away from people who want to show their accomplishments in the first game, my interest is purely in having some armor that lets my Elementalist look even remotely like a soldier in a war with apocalyptic dragons and not some frilly ponce. The heritage pants/boots just seem to hit that spot the best in my eyes.

The pets in PvP were discussed long ago back when the forum opened up. It’s an old topic now so no one discusses it any more. My main point was ANet already has a precedent for releasing exclusive HoM rewards in PvP for a problem they could have gotten around by releasing PvP pets with the same skills. If they didn’t respect the HoM pets, why should they respect the HoM armor?

Fair point but it’s all based on an icon, nothing is confirmed so my first comment stands.

Actually, you wouldn’t have to do anything other than link your GW1 base campaign+EOTN to your GW2 account to get half of the Heritage armor skins. And you’d only need three more points to get the gloves, helm, and shoulders to finish off the sets, which really wouldn’t take too much time at all.

That is correct. You get the shoes, pants and chest piece just for owning the EoTN and one other game. To get 3 more points, Nightfall is best. One mini pet (easy to get by asking on the forum), a hero (Koss unlocks in a few minutes of gameplay if you have Nighfall) and you can AFK a ranger pet to level 20 by death leveling. Get to the HoM with a tapestry Jora will give you and there are your 6 points.
AFK Pet death leveling
Have a char with primary or secondary ranger, the closer to level 20 the better. Take a party of henchmen out and find a charmable pet. Clear out the area of hostile enemies. Put all the henchmen on neutral and flag to one side. Have the monk have only a resurection skill or disable all his other skills. Remove all armor. Tag the pet with a weak weapon so it attacks you then put away the weapon as you don’t want to accidently kill it. It will kill you, it will gain exp. the monk will Rez you. Go AFK. Eventually the pet will be level 20. You can then charm it and dedicate it to the HoM for one point.
Edit: after thinking it over it’s possible you’ll need a Hero monk for this, not a henchman. So this might not apply to someone starting out. However if you get a pet early on, it will level with you and be level 20 about the same time you are, and then it can be dedicated to the HoM.
It will take a few hours of leveling to 20 or close and the time to death level a pet and then making the run to the HoM, but after that you’ll have 3 sets of armor that is free to apply,

Because you only have it in PvP. You can’t show it off anywhere else. Unlike the armor and wepons. People will take something quick and easy for “Balance”, but not for the sake of taking away the prestige and invalidate the work they put in.

I’m not so sure the argument that it only shows in one area of gameplay is a really good argument to not respect the claims back when the HoM was made that it would be unique rewards only available to Guild Wars 1 veterans. Not when they could have made a set of PvP pets with their own unique skins to address any PvP gameplay problems and kept the HoM pets for HoM vets.

It was a quick and easy fix for the sake of “Balance”, I never said it wasn’t lazy, which it is. Like I said, most people, me included, will accept it.(I don’t like it, I never did.) As it was done for “Balance” and it’s just in one game mode. Having access to everything in all areas is another matter.

It was inconvenient.
They had a choice with the PvP pets. Either keep to what they said to the Guild Wars 1 vets about the the HoM rewards being unique and only for Guild Wars 1 vets and make a set of PvP pets or to throw what they said out the window at the first sign it would be a bother to keep their word.
It was inconvenient, so they didn’t keep to what they said. This is not an admirable quality and if they are willing to toss aside what they said in one case, then they will be willing to toss it aside in another. It’s not a good sign when a person or a business doesn’t keep to what they say because it’s a bother to them when they do.

We are saying the same thing, I already said it was laziness on there part. It was inconvenient to make new pets, si they did the easy thing. Now if they do the same with the other HoM skins and lock them away behind a PvP reward line, it will be them being lazy again. And at that point anyone with half a brain will.never believe a word they say again. Hiding laziness behind the guise of “Balance” is one thing, doing it blatantly and sticking it to your loyal player base is another.
I know some people will not care as they have them, and don’t have to work for them again, but if they added them to the new reward system, they would also be doing those loyal players out of a reward everytime the got a HoM reward they already had. People are not going to power through 25 reward items that are going to be worse than junk with no coin value attached to them. The more you look at it the more likely.its just a place holder icon.

True, we are saying the same thing. However if they are willing to break what they said as a matter of laziness and inconvenience then I’m not sure it matters to them what the Guild Wars 1 vets think. There will be large numbers of Guild Wars 2 only players who don’t care about Guild Wars 1 and who don’t care about anything said so many years ago but who would be delighted to get more skins for their wardrobe. If the payoff to ANet is more people playing their PvP mode, then they might consider any forum outrage as worth the cost. Just like the pets, it will fade and no longer be discussed.
ANet may give it to you.
Why has it taken 3 years for it to rise to the surface though?

Not really. HoM pets are just reskinned copies of other pets – they don’t offer anything that other players wouldn’t have. They really shouldn’t have been given to people without HoM points.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
And what about the people who have bought GW1, in the mean time? ANet would be robbing them in affect. By saying, you want them? Buy and play GW1. It’s the only way. Giving the culture of blame claim, someone somewhere would try to bring a law suite against them. People would claim false advertising. And that they spend how ever amount of time/money to get the HoM points, that they probably would not have spent. Look at the fall out over the HoT pre purchase. That peeved alot of people. Now if people had not made a fuss, then I’d say the door is open to anything. But it didn’t go down that way. I don’t think ANet want to upset anyone any time soon. The last thing they want is bad press when trying to launch an Xpac. Bad press will drive away people faster than kanya west walking in to a room.

I have doubts of ANet’s ability to not make bad decisions that peeve a lot of people.
Was there not a very long thread before the expansion detailing why people thought it was a bad idea not to give at least one character slot? And did they not ignore what that thread had to say and not give a char slot with the basic expack?
If they aren’t going to give away HoM armor for PvP, wouldn’t you think that anyone with any common sense would realize that picking the icon of what is supposed to be an exclusive skin to show up as a non exclusive reward would be a bad idea? And didn’t they pick that icon?
Wouldn’t anyone think that breaking their word on HoM pets, even in one area of the game only, just because they were lazy, wasn’t a bad idea and didn’t they do that?
Didn’t anyone realize that basing a gemstore armor on what was supposed to be restricted to one race only and selling it to all races a bad idea, and didn’t they do that?
No, I have no confidence in ANet’s ability to avoid bad ideas that will peeve a lot of people.
ANet may give it to you.
Fair point but it’s all based on an icon, nothing is confirmed so my first comment stands.
The thing is, if it’s only an icon, why choose an icon that is absolutely sure to be controversial? That’s a really dumb icon to pick if they aren’t planning to actually use that item. They could have made an icon that said [?], like the unknowns in the beta area if they aren’t planning to use exclusive Guild Wars 1 armor or the [Under Construction] icon I’ve seen before.
That’s typical ANet — giving fodder for people to create mountains over molehills instead of having someone vet stuff before it becomes available to the public.
I’m not saying that ANet won’t do something annoying like turn other HoM-exclusive rewards into PvP rewards; I’m just saying the fact of a dumb choice of placeholder is only evidence of ANet forgetting the hype is affected by everything that people can see in the game, not just what they intend as hype.
Considering that PvP players can have all the HoM ranger pets, including the 30 point Black Widow Spider even though they have zero HoM points, this is nothing new.
That makes a lot of sense now. I was like how the hell does every single ranger have the black widow in hotm.
