Hero Points. Should They Be Converted
I think there should be a new way to let players convert their unneeded hero points into something more useful for example spirit shards or another type of good.
There are no unneeded hero points. you will need them for Elite specs.

This. The only reason one may have excess points is because there are specs we don’t have access to just yet, but will do in HoT.
So long Treeface.
“…Kormir? I know not of whom you speak.”
Ok. I didn’t think of that. Thanks for reminding us. Appreciate it.

Surely we won’t have to map complete to unlock the specs so there will still extra points for many characters?

If you wisely saved the Hero Points given from 1-80, you should have enough to open the new specs.
Otherwise, farm them up now, while the content is stale, so you’re ready for HoT.
Of course, that won’t matter in PvP.

I’m pretty sure it’s been announced that if you do 100% World Completion you will be able to unlock all elite specs when they are released to us.

From 1 to 80 you receive enough Hero Points to unlock all the core profession. Eliste Specialization should only need around 90-100 hero points based on current cost and you get more than 200 hero points from doing a complete map completion. So you should only need half a map completion to unlock all your profession at the expansion. Which imo is fair since most people can reach half a map completion pretty easily even with alts. If it need a full map completion it would be such a pain in the kitten on alts.

Yes, 50% is doable, especially since it is even less by doing skill, err, hero challenges. You can get a bunch of those by just doing the low-level challenges, either by yourself or by the fact others nearby will join in for the point as well. I just hope whatever points we had after unlocking everything during leveling comes back for unlocking the elite stuff.
No need to change excess Hero Points into anything, if just allows those of us with hundreds of Hero Points to automatically unlock any new Elite Specs or potential Trait lines they might add in at a later time without having to wait to earn more Hero Points.
There was a post that said excess hero points after the expansion will be a form of currency.

“Excess Hero Points beyond the number required for unlocks will be converted into a currency, which will be stored in the account-wide wallet. More information on the currency will come at a later date, so keep an eye out!”
ANet may give it to you.

It says Hero Points right there on that post, not Spirit Shards, or skill points for that matter.
