Hi, I'm new.
This should keep you busy while you’re downloading – welcome!
I’d say the first thing to keep in mind is that this is not WoW, in that it really isn’t about rushing to level cap.
My suggestions are thus:
- Throw out any and all preconceptions you have about the game. Simply approach it, and take it, for what it is
- Don’t listen to 99.999999999% of the forum voices. Yes, even mine on many occasions. Never let us sway what you think, or desire to do. Play how you desire to play.
- If you don’t like exploring you may not enjoy the pve aspect of the game. It is very much about exploring and enjoying the environments that where built for us.
- The game has a wiki, you might want to check it out when you have a minute. It can be amazingly helpful
you can browse this as well
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players/first
a couple things that are different from other games. there is no rush to level. explore every little cave you see, you might just run into a jumping puzzle or an extra loot chest or even a large underground cave system/mine with mobs working away as well as more events etc. Allow yourself to get distracted, hop into events that pop up and follow them. if npcs continue to talk about what just happened, hang out and see if they say something, another event might just pop up. When you go into pvp areas, you are automatically scaled to 80 and given your choice of gear, the same choices everyone gets, so no rush to level to get gear for pvp….but yea, look through the links.
Welcome!!!
We are happy to have you here and i hope you will enjoy the game as much or more than i do.I played the game for 1,800 hours ,bought it almost 2 years ago and i still have fun.
Some advices i can give:
1.Do not rush leveling to 80,better try to enjoy the environment, the story and all the smalld etails the game has,Tyria is a great world waiting for you to explore it.
2.Join a guild, they can help you and provide you with the answers you need.
3.If you like to make friends in games don’t hesitate to talk with the players ,GW2 has one of the most friendly player base.
4.Make sure to have me in your friend list!
Have Fun!!!

3….GW2 has one of the most friendly player base.
it really does, the systems are set up in such a way as to reduce players “griefing” one another. All resource nodes are instanced. If you see a tree to chop down, you dont have to rush in and get it before someone else does. In fact, its not uncommon for you to be farming something, have a mob attack you only to have another player, kill the mob for you before going and farming the same node themselves. The same goes for kill credit and loot. If you do enough damage (and its really not that much most of the time) to something, you get credit. Everyone who does enough gets credit. There isnt kill stealing. Loot is instanced. No one can get your loot. Everyone can resurrect anyone and you get xp. All this an other things just plain leads to a friendly welcoming environment. See someone get surrounded my mobs and it looks to be accidental? unless you hit the <1% chance of someone just trying to see what they can solo, it isnt really any detriment to them for you to jump in and drop a few aoe attacks.
Just make your character and screw around in PvE, explore and do events and such.
Some suggestions for you:
- You can make a class, get it through the tutorial and enter the PvP zone to try that class out at its level 80 potential. I highly suggest doing this so you don’t end up leveling your class to 30-80 and find out that you hate how it plays.
- After you make your character and do a few quests to earn some coin you can click the lion button at the top of your screen (the trading post) and buy things. I highly suggest buying food, it gives you extra XP per kill and gives you some stat bonuses to help you out.
- Join a guild, when you make it into Lions Arch shout in map chat for one. Try to get into a big one with lots of stat bonuses that they keep active (make sure the guild is nice too of course lol).
Also…don’t make a ranger or mesmer, Anet made them useless. Instead, just make a Warrior and you’ll be allowed to join groups in dungeons.
Just make a Warrior and you’ll be the best at every game mode ever.
Fixed that for you.
Don’t listen to Shen or Flytrap. Feel free to play whatever class you want.
if you find a good friendly guild, Shen and flytrap’s comments are irrelevant.

Everyone I know loves Bearbows.
In all seriousness, what they’re saying is for the most part true; if you really want to play a certain class, then there are ways to make it work. However, it’s simply a fact that some classes excel at certain roles whereas others are left in the dust, but this doesn’t really come into play until high-end PvE and sPvP/WvW content.
You can’t really go wrong with any profession for your first character, but a lot of people would recommend staying away from Ranger since they’re just in a weird place right now. Thankfully, they’re getting some pretty cool looking balance changes in the near future.
I’d personally recommend Warrior/Guardian/Thief/Elementalist for your first character depending on what playstyle you lean towards.

The point that people in this thread are trying to make is that the ranger class is in a horrible place when compared to the other classes right now. This game is easy, you can achieve most things in this game naked with one weapon lol. In all seriousness though, you guys have one good weapon that has a horrific auto attack leap chain and frost spotter. As sad as it is, that is literally all you have that is actually useful in group play. Every other class ever with the exception of maybe the necromancer brings more.
Don’t get me wrong, I have two level 80’s right now and am in the process of leveling a warrior and a mesmer. My two 80’s are a necromancer and an engineer. I’m not some meta freak elitist. Even so, my Engi brings 1000x more utility and dps than any ranger ever could and they aren’t even top tier.
Edit: Overall OP, you need to play what you find interesting. I’m just trying to help you out by telling you about the issues of several of the classes. All classes can function to a reasonable degree.

speaking of buying things. Dont bother with the 4 slot inventory bags from a merchant. Save up a little money (and by a little I mean the first hour of game play lol) and grab 4 8 slot inventory bags/boxes off the trading post.
Also, do get yourself a set of copper farming tools (pick, sickle and axe) and farm everything. Yes everything. You get xp and crafting mats which you will use. Luckily, thi doesnt fill up your inventory because this game has a nice little feature in the top right hand corner of your inventory screen. click the gear and hit “deposit collectibles” all crafting items are then instantly transferred into their own designated slots in your bank. this can be done from anywhere in the game not just at a bank. deposit early deposit often.
All classes are great, just a few classes aren’t in some meta builds, like Necros are in a bad spot for dungeon speed run, but even so necros can do very well in dungeons and they are great in WvW and also good in PvP.
Rangers have a good spot in dungeon runs, currently in a bad spot in WvW zerg fights, but great in WvW roaming, and also in a good spot at PvP, warrior currently is in a good spot (not the best) at everything, and that is what some players is complaining.
Resuming, any class will allow you do achieve everything in game, as long as you enjoy playing said class.

This, but keep in mind that certain things just aren’t as good as others. Classes that rely on kittenty AI pet mechanics are ones that you should probably stay away from (ranger and to a lesser extent, mesmer). They just tend to not function as well overall, pets are buggy in this game. On top of that some classes are favored over others by the balance team, Warriors and Guardians will always be good in PvE while others will suffer.

There isn’t a point that should be made about rangers in this thread….this is not a thread about rangers.Anyway, have fun!

Hi thready,
First of all, welcome to Guild Wars 2! I’m moving your thread to the “Players helping Players” subforum that is the best place for you to find help (although players have been nice to point you in the right direction ).
We also have an official wiki where you can find tons of information : http://wiki.guildwars2.com/
Have fun playing Guild Wars 2!
Also…don’t make a ranger or mesmer, Anet made them useless. Instead, just make a Warrior and you’ll be allowed to join groups in dungeons.
Welcome to the game.
And also don’t follow this guy’s advice… His bias.
All classes are good at all game modes!
Some people prefer the class they know best and think of other classes useless when they lack knowledge of how to play it in the first place unfortunately.
Engineers and Mesmers are fun to play .
Engineers closest telative would be a Shammy
Mesmers, not real compare somewhere between a Mage / Warlock type thing.
Just remember NOT to run up to the NPC with the heart and click all the time, no need, just wander into areas, see what you can do " right of screen" and if complete a Heart, see the guy with heart on head ..
Do not rely on Karma armour for Runes you cannot recycle Karma stuffs.
Have fun and enjoy, and remember, no gear chase in GW2 so dont rush to 80.
welcome
regarding professions, pick one that you like playing. all are good at everything. the only reason everyone says to go warrior is because it’s the most straight-forward faceplant profession (just run at enemy and mash all the keys) – it’s the easiest to do good in. If I were to rank the professions in ease-of-learning and complexity, I would say:
warrior (easiest / most simple)
guardian
ranger
thief
necro
engineer
mesmer
elementalist (hardest / most complex)
Mystic’s Gold Profiting Guide

I main an Engineer and have never been kicked from a group. Ever.
Every race and class have their place and if played well is capable of more than playing their part.
Quidquid Latine Dictum Sit, Altum Videtur
Also…don’t make a ranger or mesmer, Anet made them useless. Instead, just make a Warrior and you’ll be allowed to join groups in dungeons.
Bad advice!!!! So tired of the ranger haters (or sometimes refered to as ‘elitists’).
There is alot of ranger hate/mes haters. Love my ranger/love my mes. My Guardian is ok/ never finished leveling my warrior. All but the warrior are lvl 80/ascended and exotic.
It’s a matter of personal preferences and what you enjoy. But the ranger is always my main when I need to do things fast (PvE). And there are groups that will dungeon with rangers.
Bet Slayer loves a mes the provides him a free portal too!

I love my mesmer, although I will admit it’s taking a lot of effort to learn how to maximize her abilities. Not ready for prime time yet.
Warriors have the lowest skill to effectiveness ratio and make good starting characters. It doesn’t mean all warriors are bad, but it does mean it’s very hard to be a bad warrior. On the other hand elementalists and engineers perform badly in the extreme on bad players, but can be amongst the strongest classes of all in good hands. If the max power levels are all balanced (they’re not actually, but they’re pretty close) and equal to 100, an elementalist’s formula might be something like 40 + Skill * 60, while a warrior’s formula would be more similar to 80 + Skill * 20. Rangers are easily survivable but they have a bad reputation as speccing them for damage performance has a high skill multiplier – so many of them end up never really dying, but never being useful either. While thieves also have a bad rep in PvE since they do damage very readily, but survivability has a high skill multiplier.
Rangers and necros, being condition-focused classes with some of their skills tied to friendly AI are in a bit of a disadvantageous place at the moment due to condition overwriting and AI problems, but it’s not something that will be much of a problem early on. Only when you’re trying to maximise a class will these things start to become more relevant.
Would advocate starting in the following: Guardian, Warrior or Necromancer, to learn the basics of the game. Then move to other classes, playing each for a short time to find out which style you like the most. Then develop that one to level 80. From then on it’s up to you whether to max out other classes, or whether to specialise in that one class. Some mechanics are easier to learn in certain classes than others.
Above all you should be more concerned with what you like to play as opposed to what performs best at the highest levels of theorycrafting – unless you find theorycrafting fun, in which case you’ll be in for a world of pain when you realise most of those who try to do it can’t calculate to save their lives.

Have you tried to leveling a mez recently after the Trait update? It’s so painfully weak and boring to play.
Just leveled my new mes to 80. And had fun doing it. It was a bit weak at the lower lvl though.
The new trait system is pretty bad(and sink) no matter what profession you chose. (for me, others seem to like it).
Mail me in game, when you learn how to do that. I’ll add you and help with level progression when I’m on.
