Hiding Commander icons
Agreed.
Although, I find it strange how other titles are not automatically displayed on name plates. I feel sorry for those people who earned God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals because they’re only able to show it off to players who actually click on them.
ArenaNet should just have titles displayed like they are in just about every other MMORPG, and like those other MMOs, implement an option to disable the feature.
Yeah, that’s a good point about the titles. I’m wondering what’s going to happen when there are 20 people in LA with commander titles and I still can’t hide them. I already have trouble finding things or people I’m playing with because the stupid icon covers up anything it’s on top of.
I’m not clear why Commander displays in towns at all.
I can see it might be relevant in dynamic event chains, and certainly Straits of Devastation / Cursed Shore etc. But I can’t think of any reason why anyone except the Commander would gain any joy from it displaying in towns.
And it’s only going to get worse as more people fork over to get one of these, right?
I guess I’m confused since I only play PvE, but what exactly is the benefit of even having this title, if any? Just to have a big icon that blocks people’s sight?

(a) It enables you to form a “squad” (group of more than 5 players) for the purposes of WvW.
(b) It identifies you as someone who’s played long enough to get 100g and cares enough about WvW to waste it on a shiny badge – i.e., someone who, statistically speaking, might know more about WvW than average and might, on average, be worth at least listening to.
© It enables players to track the commander easily in WvW which makes it easier to stay in a zerg rather than getting split up across several sub-objectives.
It’s pretty useful in WvW providing the Commander’s at least halfway competent.
It would help to be able to turn it off in case they’re not, though.
It allows you to form a squad which is a much bigger group than a party. So for large Dynamic Events or for WvW they come in handy.
Shyamal- Asuran Necromancer | Varg Houtman- Norn Ranger
Nemo Randolf- Human Guardian
Thanks. That explains it pretty well. I’m sure if I played more WvW (I have played some, but not a whole lot) then I would probably know more about it. As it stands, I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t quite know.
You’d think a simple option in the general options menu to disable the icon wouldn’t be too difficult to implement. We can already decide if we want to see other player/npc/enemy names or not.

Most of the commanders didn’t really pay 100g for it, while some could have done it, most of them just collected the 100g from their guild
They should disable commanders title outside WvW, easy fix. There is not a single reason why it should work outside WvW.
My opinion of Commander was formed on the 3rd day after release when I saw someone walking around Divinity w/ the icon. I have yet to WvW so perhaps my opinion will change. But I just think I’m seeing someone w/ a large disposable income in RL.
Agreed. Seeing these commander icons on maps should be optional in PvE.
Providing the option to hide the commander icon reduces a significant reason for getting the commander status in the first instance.
This scenario is undesirable both for the commander, and Anet.
Whilst I don’t agree with a complete hide function, there could be improvements made to how, when and where it displays.
They should have a “red” alternative that you can buy with badges of honor, so you can tell who has real pvp experience and who just hangs around Lions Arch looking for attention.

What do you mean? That a significant reason to buy commander status is to show up on everyone’s map in towns and out in the PvE world even if they are not grouped or doing the same thing with the commander(s)?
Sounds pretty strange reason tbh.
I have nothing against commander: as long as they have the presence of mind to hide their title. If they deserve the title, they should already be in possession of the tactical and respectful mind to hide it.
Anet will never get rid of it because it is a gold sink. They will never let you hide it because they wouldn’t want to offend their precious commanders which I could mostly burst damage to death (before their blood turns red) in any real pvp scenario other than a zerg. Whoopity friggin doo.
I want it hidden, and I never want to see you again in my game unless I go in WvW because you disgust me. Anyone can get the gold to become a commander, but only fools wear it in pve as a way to annoy other players and instead of supporting their guild they get the stupid title. Its like allocating funds away from your troops so you can wear a nice frilly pink dress to the ball.
If a commander has the respect to hide their title, I will have respect for their accomplishment. If they have no respect for me, I have no respect for them. Respect in this manner is a true mark of an actual tactical minded individual. If they have none, they might as well have “I spent all this money on the game and all I got was this stupid title which befits my tactical prowess” written on their armor shirt.
I will not respect you if you don’t hide it in pve. If you are incapable of understanding why I will not respect you, you are even less deserving of having any tactical advantage than before.
Does blocking players cause the title to disappear? If it does, I’d be totally fine with blocking all players who do this to irritate me when I am trying to find map objectives. I want my mini map back. You are not a landmark and you do not matter. Get off my minimap.
Alot of players agree with me but they are too polite to state it. They lack the need to clutter everyones map that half the commanders have.
Again, if you are respectful and disable it in pve, I will respect you back. If not, I hope I am never in the same zone as you because I gain no personal entertainment in staring at your name among the throngs of other commanders with their blue icon cluttering the streets of LA like garbage.
the light! And if we dance, until the heart explodes,
It’ll make this place ignite!
