High Level FOTMs Less Rewarding Than Dungeons
And this is why I don’t bother with Fractals, there’s no really meaning on farm for skins there, since it’s RNG based, it may drop on the first run or on your 1000th one…so I rather spent my time doing other things.
As it now, there’s no point on running FotM, other then getting the rings ;P
doesn’t mean you’re the best player in the group
it means the enemies considered you a low priority.”
Well as above poster said you can do it for ascended gear. You can do it for normal gear and or skins. I know this one might blow some minds but you can do it for fun and challenge as well!
I was actually thinking this just the other day. I can run like, 3-5 dungeon paths in the time it takes to complete one fractal cycle and get 5-6 gold from that.
Also, people who are at high level fractals and doing them regularly are probably about done with the ‘fun and challenge’ of them.
They should have upgraded fractal rewards (both for individual fractals and for jade maw) when they revamped rewards for other dungeons.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Our guild does them on certain nights. Help new people or just do them for fun. There are plenty of people that still find them fun and challenging.
I’m with you…I do it for the challenge. Whenever I see someone on here calling for more challenging content within the game I wonder what their FOTM personal reward level is.
I once got “one shotted” by a bunny on a FOTM level 71 !!! I laughed so hard I nearly cried and doing that level of fractals was by far the most personally challenging content I have found…everything on that level hits like a champion in the regular game and champions hit like trucks! And you simply cannot “zerg” them, you only have 5 people so it takes tactics and skill to succeed.
However, it has been about a month or so since I last did fractals. The living story eats up all of my free time these days and I already outfitted all 8 of my level 80’s with ascended (infused) rings as well as 20 slot bags. I have over 500 pristine fractal relics and nothing to spend them on! Please Anet, let us buy ascended weapons or armor with pristine (or even regular) fractal relics! (but don’t make it an abscene 10,000 of them).
I love challenge, that’s why I’m playing FOTM (honestly it’s not really that hard), but I also want to save some money for new gear, weapons and alts.
Why is level 35 Dungeon 15 minute path more rewarding than 1 hour scale 50 FOTM run?
If you want gold, you do dungeons.
If you want champ bags, you do FG
If you want rare drops, you do world boss
If you want fractal weapons, you do fotm

Define rewarding. Fractal have unique skins and karma. It’s just different forms of reward.
Yeah, about that. I got FOTM Longbow. I have no Ranger.
Yeah, about that. I got FOTM Longbow. I have no Ranger.
Keep playing. It’s much better than Q13 fast cast BDS.
edit: Oh, and warrior can use longbow also.
Yeah, about that. I got FOTM Longbow. I have no Ranger.
I have 5 maces still in the bank after already giving one to my guardian and warrior, I’ve gotten 3 scepters, 2 tridents, 3 daggers, 1 GS, 1 Sword, 1 torch, and 1 shortbow, but have not gotten a single Hammer, staff, shield, spear, pistol, longbow, or harpoon gun. Its RNG…and for some reason my number keeps rolling “mace”.
I think you guys are missing one huge thing fractal’s offers. They offer large karma rewards based on your level. Basically Anet is pushing new players into fractal’s. They want ascended weapons or a legendary.
The current ascended weapon’s cost 15 obsidian shards each to make.
Each obsidian shard cost 2100 karma so you need 31,500 karma. I know some people would say do events which is true but each event gives at most 400 karma so you would need to do 79 event’s to get the karma. That is not completely true either since after about 10-12 events you get diminishing returns for the next few hour’s.
This new karma starvation system that Anet is using forces new player’s into fractals.
Let’s assume a couple of things:
1) High level fractals are a challenge.
2) Some people like challenges.
3) Lots of people like rewards.
4) Lots of people hate frustration.
Okay? Good.
Now, here’s how it works. High level fractals are a challenge, but they don’t give rewards enough to draw people there for rewards. The ONLY reason to play them is for the challenge, right?
IF they balance the rewards, then more people will be drawn to them. People that want the rewards, but don’t enjoy the challenge or the frustration that comes with failing. Soon, there would be a growing cry to “fix” the fractals. You’d also have more people getting frustrated with them to the point of quitting. Eventually, the growing pressure on ANet would likely result in a reduction of the challenge of high level fractals.
So, there it is. You can have challenge there, but only because the majority of players don’t want to go there due to the poor rewards. (I’m one of them, by the way. I’m just honest with myself.) It might seem unfair at a glance, but it’s not. You can play the same fractals on easier levels to get the same content, it’s personal choice to go at a higher difficulty level. Boost the rewards, and you’ll eventually lose the challenge. You can’t have both.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
Rewards have always been unbalanced all across the game. World events were poor so they added dancing chests. Then dungeons were poor so they added guaranteed gold. Then champions were poor so they added champion purses. Now everything is poor compared to champions and …. they can’t keep adding more and more rewards to everything in a clumsy fashion. They need a complete revision of the reward system but I don’t see it coming unfortunately.

WvW earns Karma faster.
Personally I don’t care about FOTM weapons, I’ve received 3 so far, using none of them.
I wanted to make Infused Fractal Capacitor (500 Ectos), but I couldn’t earn anything doing FOTM runs, so I had to grind COF/other dungeons for a whole week. Seems unfair.

Post a screenshot with 3000G.
You can’t possibly earn 3000G without doing dungeons/events/wvw unless you play TP.
Nick you missed his point. If you prefer one playstyle, you get a lot of reward A and no reward B. In your case thats a decent amount of karma, fotm skins and a lot of ascended rings.
I do a lot of dungeons and while I have just 650 instead of 3000 Gold (I could screen that for you if you insist) I have trouble gathering ascended rings for my alts.
I’d gladly change all the (20+) ascended rings I don’t need and FOTM skins for gold.
Are you experienced enough to kill jade maw on fotm lvl 10 even if your team is not that good? You could sell runs. Its not the world, but its something.

Already have enough karma to choke a donkey to death. Even after buying multiple full sets of Orr gear.

If you are saying the challenge is the reward then I agree. If they iron out the technical issues with some of the Fractals that have been mentioned ad nauseam by players and have not been addressed yet, then I will be beyond stoked. My hope is that with the inclusion of the upcoming new Fractals they do a QoL and bug squashing pass on the old ones. I think it’s great they are at least going to address the unnecessary length of the Dredge Fractal.

Whenever I get 100k Karma , I always spend it on Orr Boxes.
Unless you need Karma armor or Shards, it’s is pointless.

Yep, that’s what I’m saying, or at least part of what I’m saying.
And while I don’t do fractals, I will agree that they need to make a pass through them and fix anything that’s not working right. Fair challenge is one thing, but difficulty due to broken/defective content hardly ever fun. If the challenge is the reward, then the challenge has to work. Otherwise, it would be like dungeons rewarding you with gold coins that you can’t spend.

The problem with this is is that the fractal weapon drop system is daft and the chances of you getting the one you actually want in a reasonable timeframe is miniscule.
They could possibly add a gold reward for complete fractals, and make a new set of mf weapons that requires new items dropped from fractals mobs\chest, and can be sold on the tp to people who don’t run fractals. (You would have to reach a certain level before they started dropping)
There was a time when Fractals were very rewarding but they nerfed it. Even though they won’t admit to doing it.
“…let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die;.”
What’s the gold value of a fractal weapons skin? Oh yeah, priceless because you CANNOT BUY ONE, EVER. No, no wait, that ’s unfair. Skins are cosmetic. How about the gold value of an Ascended ring? Or Ascended back items?
Oh.
Yeah. That shiny gold coin from dungeon paths just totally overshadows getting terminal gear for 3 slots.
That dripping sound? That’s sarcasm.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Considering that rings are available for laurels (or laurels and badges…) and devs already mentioned that backpacks will be available through non-fractal means soon…

Honestly, FoTM aren’t that bad loot-wise. Some are bad yes (the Colossus fractal especially), but others are long and profitable (dredge) or fairly quick and easy (water and swamp).
I don’t think fractals need to be the most profitable thing in the game to make it enjoyable. It just needs some basic loot and a chance at exclusive loot to be worth it, and offer a challenge to make it interesting.
- The basic loot is there whatever people says. A basic lvl 30 fractal run should give you at least 3-4 cores, 6-7 yellows and sometimes one exotic or two (somthing like one every three run), plus a ton of standard loot in the right fractals. I don’t understand why people skill all the trash in fractals all the time, they have nice loot tables. For example, bats (grawl fractal) and harpies (asura fractal) drop T6 bloods (30s a piece), sons of svanir and wolves after the elemental drop T6 claws/fangs/totems, …
- The exclusive loot is there but I would revamp it : get a rare chance at a token to buy any fractal skin you want. The chance for that token should be kinda low but not too much (1/10, 1/20), and should NOT be tradable.
- For the challenge part, they had it at the beginning. Any kind of content can not retain the same challenge infinitely. Let us wait the addition of the new fractals, and the “official” opening of levels above 48 and we will have it back.
How is Swamp fractal profitable?
You literally have to kill only 1 monster.

Well, maybe because I’ve played GW1, I don’t find it too much of a problem. In GW1, even the same weapon has different attribute/trait in gw2’s term. You can run 100 times of a dungeon, finally get a nice looking weapon that’s useless for your character. Only difference is those weapons are sellable. So imho, if fractal weapons are tradable, I will have zero problem with it. But then it’ll take away the “you can’t buy this” uniqueness from them.
