Highest dps professions pre-80
Probably dagger/dagger thief, but I’d be surprised if anyone had bothered to test such irrelevant stuff.

I’d say dagger/dagger thief too, in general, but levelling is so fast that you never have (and don’t need) the optimum gear for any levelling profession so I’d say use whatever weapons you get/like on whatever you want to play at 80.
To put it another way a level 40 thief will probably do a lot more damage with a level 40 sword than they would with a level 25 dagger.
AoE or single target? I really cant see a dagger/dagger thief beating any of the others that just stack up mobs and cleave them down.
For soloing, it might not be the highest DPS, but I doubt anything is faster than a pistol/pistol thief. Dagger is of course higher damage, but unload will instantly kill most enemies from range. I play random builds to 80 in the downtime. A sword/torch guardian is also fast, which gains a high crit chance early on and capable of blinking to and quickly killing enemies. However, those were both single targets and in most cases, I usually end up pulling 5-10 at a time, where a staff elementalist is going to win.

I was going to say this about the thief: depends a bit on single vs cleave damage, really. I’m pretty sure with those might stacks, pistol/pistol is going to hit harder than daggers, but it doesn’t cleave…
revenant with roiling mists would be pretty broken. Easy 44% crit chance without any precision.
I’m pretty sure that it changes from as you go from L2 to L80. Why do you want to know?
Leveling in this game is quick, even with suboptimal builds. At the lowest levels, you can buy any of the strength-boosting runes for ~20 copper and if you apply unique ones, you can boost your damage output by a ton, far more than the benefit of picking a different profession.
Or put another way, the highest DPS sub-80 professions is only partly a matter of mechanics; it’s much more a function of your skill as a player (which is also true at level 80).
I recently leveled an engineer, and the flamethrower with condi gear while leveling up is OP as hell. The damage stacks with the flamethrowers ‘1’ attack and hardly anything interrupts you to break the stacking damage while leveling. Boss fights are all throw turrets down, switch to the flame thrower and circle strafe the boss with the ‘1’ autoattacking. 3-4 full flamethrower blasts is enough to take out pretty much all enemies while leveling. Once into the proper endgame this doesn’t work quite as well, but to level up it is incredibly fast and easy.
Eh you aren’t looking for DPS before 80 though. If you are, you’re doing it wrong. Some people say that the glasses skins help but, in general, levelling is perfectly possible even without those. Here’s how I levelled my Rev:
1. Make character (this is easily the most time consuming part, so set aside an hour or two).
2. Ignore/avoid/run through the tiresome intro. The lore gets in the way.
3. Proceed to your nearest bank.
4. Retrieve 1 level 20 scroll and 60 Tomes of Knowledge.
5. Put on reading glasses.
6. Start clicking.

Engi’s Flamethrower doesn’t work like you think it does at all. The only ‘stacking damage’ it can do is 2 stacks of burning if you have +condi duration (therefore, wasting much better rune/sigil options). Also, “only3-4 full flamethrower blasts” is ~7.5-10 secs. Literally any other weapon in the game can achieve that easily and their are many that will see that same kill in ~1-2 secs. Unless you’re abusing sigils (or using them cleverly) and even then Ft Engi is a terrible choice for leveling.
Edit: Sw/P+SB Thief is, hands down, the easiest to level in the game and has access to great damage modifiers early on (as well as mobility). Go ahead and get map completion while you’re at it!
