HoM exclusive ranger pets?
Cosmetic only rewards. There is no problem here.
Cosmetic only rewards. There is no problem here.
Thanks for the carefully thought-out response. Just curious if there’s enough nods to the GW1 vets or if I should just start playing that game because it’s more efficient at unlocking things in GW2 than playing GW2 is.
…the HoM rewards are mediocre at best when you think about how many thousands of hours some loyal GW1 players put into that game. But that’s what we got and people who didn’t play the original didn’t get it. And that is the way it is.
If you really feel so strongly about this, pick up a copy of GW1 and earn your HoM skins, like the rest of us did.

I’m not questioning your dedication or claiming that anyone with these rewards didn’t “earn them.” But I guess I’m just wondering how far the fan service will go. I’m not exaggerating when I say that except for WvW and sPvP ahievements (kill 10000000 dudes etc. etc.) I actually have more GW1-related achievements left to complete than GW2 ones. I can easily-enough ignore the GW1 specific achievement tab and I think the title/weapon skin is a good idea as a nod to your dedication. I think the ranger pets thing takes it to an entirely new level though.

You my friend get a prize!
As a completionist myself, I can sympathise with you, OP. However, each of the HoM pets are functionally identical to an existing pet in GW2; the unique skins are meant to be a “thank you” to fans of the original game, a recognition of their loyalty, without giving them any extra benefits over new players.
As a side note, I don’t even have the “GWAMM” title, despite 7 years of playing GW1. The amount of grind necessary to get a title that’s hardly (if ever) noticed by anyone else in GW2 just didn’t strike me as being worth it.
I’ve always felt that the HoM pets shouldn’t have been placed as grayed out slots for people who don’t have them. It smacks entirely too much of trying to goad/annoy completionists into buying GW1 along with EotN to earn those skins (which by the way, takes 30 points in the HoM to get them all).
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
Ye we worked hard to get those hom rewards and believe me for some of us it wasnt easy. Heck ive playe gw1 for ages and i dont even have all the points needed to unlock all the pets. I just got the moa and im not complaining.
Console yourself with the knowledge that they are weaker than the equivalent Guild Wars 2 pets. I don’t even use mine since they die so fast.
Buy GW1 and get the HoM points then, those pets are gifts for GW1 vets and it will stay that way.
Just echoing what most other people in this thread have said, if you are such a completionist, grab a copy of Guild Wars trilogy and expansion and fill out the HoM for the rewards like all of us who previously played Guild Wars did. If you were truly a completionist, you’d play it just to get the backstory.
Its just skins for pets that exist in GW2 so I’d say its not a big deal. You say your a completionist but if you want those that means playing GW1. Guild Wars isn’t the only series with exclusive skins from playing the previous game(s) from MMO’s to console series. It’s a great way to reward veterans while not making them more powerful. Now you just have to decide if GW1 is worth it to you. It has a great story, but the gameplay is dated now. Personally still find it one of the best game stories with rich lore that is lacking in GW2. You’ll find lots of small references to the original in GW2 too so that’s always cool.

The ‘fan service’ stops immediately after HoM so you have nothing to worry about there, and if you’re a true completionist you will get GW1 and work for the other 4 pets. It’s a great game, sorry for your OCD.
tbh though i have most of hom unlocked besides the spider.
but i do agree with the op that we should be able to unlock them in game or by mini quest.
I don’t care for the hom skins ect ect,but having greyed out pet slots is stupid,as everytime your going to change your pet,it there to see.
As for the armour or weapons, well there not forced it your face now are they not like the pets.
And spending 1000 of hours on a more or less empty server now to unlock them is pointless.
The OP was quite clearly stating that he objected to the greyed out boxes, and not the existence of the skins. There is a satisfaction to seeing a completed “set” when you open a tab, be it dyes, achievements, pets or whatever. This is hardly an unfair request, and telling him to go and play 30+ hours in a game he doesn’t own just to clear those four boxes is kind of missing the point. There is a difference between GW1 players getting something extra, and GW2 players having something locked out.
Edit: (moved reply to OP)
(edited by Transistor.8746)
I wish it had been 30 hours…I spent 7000+ and still do not have GWAMM, though I am/have ‘Kind of a Big Deal’. It is a pity that didn’t carry over.
As for the OP, perhaps you could make a suggestion in the Suggestions forum, and if enough people agree with you, then the devs would remove the greyed out boxes in pets and mini-pets, skills, etc.
-snip-
So your complaint boils down to:
1) It’s not a skin (even though it is)
2) It doesn’t look pretty (which doesn’t really matter)
I’m not sure you’ve thought this through.
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.
I think it’s totally ANet’s prerogative to try to encourage people to buy GW and GW:EN by whatever means they wish.
It also helps ANet understand, in a small way, what people want. If they collect data on how many people had GW2 first and then linked a GW account later, and how many HoM points they rack up, it could be good information.
Cosmetic only rewards. There is no problem here.
Technically, they’re not pet skins. They’re a 2nd copy of a pet. So those of us who love raven, can run dual ravens…I can’t. I have to swap out for another pet. I’d love to have 2 ravens with identical skills. True skins would be an option to make my black raven white, or my pink moa black. I’m guessing this is why the HOM raven & spider have lower vitality than their regular counterparts. They’d be too OP if you could run exact copies simultaneously.

The rainbow jellyfish is not rainbow. Still remember seeing that the first day of headstart in HoM and being disappointed.
The HoM rewards do not confer any advantage (in fact some of the HoM pets are weaker than their normal counterparts). I see no problem with that.

I wish I could hide those pets from the panel. Maybe they should have their own section. I’d feel better about not being able to get them if I didn’t feel like my collection was so incomplete.
My main is a ranger, and while I sympathise with the little twitch that says ’you’re missing something!’ when I look at the pet panel, I think it’s fine that there are pet skins that are HoM only. If they had some kinds of special abilities that gave them an edge it’d be one thing, but as it’s just a cosmetic difference I don’t really see the issue. I always run with my bear Cookie anyway. ^^

If you’d said something like “it’s unfair some people can dual-raven” or something like that, I’d agree that might be an issue . . . if I hadn’t watched the raven get laid out real fast in most serious fights.
The only Hall pet I used for long was the black moa and that’s because it was one of my two usual pets in GW1. That and a wolf from Presearing I had picked up.
Some of the HoM pets actually have worse stats then the non HoM pets. You can see the spider stats here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Spider same goes for a few others.

It’s funny because OP admits he’s fine with most of the HoM rewards…..just not the ones HE wants.
And that’s the problem with the large majority of this forum community.
I had to go back and reread the OP 3 times to make sure I am getting their point.
It seems like the problem is they are mad because they can’t get the pets that the rest of us who spent years dedicated to GW1 to earn, were rewarded with. I played GW for over 6 years and I do not have GWAMM nor will I ever be able to get it, because I got to 49points out of 50 and GW2 started. I have no complaints at Anet for not letting me get my last point for GW1 in GW2. I did not make it and so be it.
I guess I am confused as to why someone who did not dedicate time, effort and around $200 into the first game, think they should have the same small shout outs/thank yous from Anet as the rest of us that did.
The HOM rewards were put there for 2 reasons:
1) As a thank you from Anet to the Dedicated GW1 Players
2) As a tie in between GW1 and GW2
There is no conspiracy to force people to now go back and BUY GW1…Dedication yielded reward, that’s it.
So it seems that all my GW1 Titles, Armor, Weapons and Mini’s don’t seem to bother the OP; it those 4 extra pets that I have, that are the contention?
My advise…When GW3 comes out and this same issue comes up, the OP can take over for my side of the argument.

QFT….. I have seen several of these entitlement threads on HOM lately. Some on the weapon skins, now on the hunter pets and I really just want to say. You had years to jump onto this. Most of these could be cleared in several months. If you so desperately want these. Buy the game (like we did), play the game (like we did), earn the points (like we did). Simple solution.
There’s a difference between being unhappy about not having the rewards, and being unhappy about seeing all those empty holes in the pet window every time you look at it.
I’m fine with there being extra rewards I can’t get, but I wish I could hide the empty slots in my pet window.

You can get those hidden when Mini Rytlock and the Mistfire Wolf disappear from my bank collection and skill tabs.
Since we’re on the topic of things I won’t get, I want a pony, or a bow that shoots ponies.
Should they try to introduce Cantha to GW2 again, they should definitely bring back the phoenix pets. I’d trade a legendary for those 2.

Oh yes, i was very disappointed that the rainbow phoenixes from HoM seem to have died out in those 250 years.

Ok a lot of people seem to think I’m bashing the HoM reward system. I’ve put a clarifying comment back in the OP for people that can’t seem to read/understand what me and others in this thread are saying.
I have a strong suspicion that most of the people claiming I’m entitled have unlocked HoM rewards and somehow feel threatened. And the people saying the UI issue “doesn’t matter” are not really offering much in the way of discussion.

No, I have the full rewards unlocked and don’t feel threatened. I’m not sure anymore if you’re asking for the pets or want them removed from the UI (which if that happened, how could we choose them?) . . .
Bear in mind, “hidden” items still will show up on listings so really there’s a small slice of people relevant to this discussion at all. The ones who look at the greyed out portraits and go “I need to have that filled” . . . while the people who look at the actual listing and go “I need to have it all” aren’t going to get any help at all.
So, no, don’t feel threatened, do think you’re acting a little bit “entitled” to something you didn’t earn, but hey, to each their own. Some people consider their character incomplete if they miss an achievement, and bemoan about how they will never be complete due to missing Halloween and Wintersday.

Tobias, I agree with this as well. I find it obnoxious that to get the whole collection I have to cough up the dough or I’ll be reminded of it every time I open up the collectors panel. To me it is less of an issue because they are at least GW2 items even though they are not found in-game, and as mentioned earlier, aren’t part of the core of profession abilities.
Extreme example, but how would you feel if your “5” skill was grayed out for one of your weapon sets and when you hovered over it had a link to the gem store? It kind of feels like that to me.
I know you’re basically trolling, but you’ve at least shown that you understand the core issue even though you’re more willing to accept it.

Hey, ty for the reply and being constructive. To answer your question, my ideal solution would be to make the pets available in-game via rare spawn, some event-mechanic, etc. Unfortunately these have already been labeled a HoM-only reward and (very clearly by this thread) it would upset the people who earned them in GW1 to go back and make them available in-game.
My second solution would be to remove them from the UI. I have already stated the reasons for this.
I understand what you are saying that even if it was taken out of the UI, it would still be something unobtainable without playing GW1 and that guides created on the internet would still include comprehensive “collections.” I find it hard to believe anyone could have a problem with this somehow, but then again, I guess people are surprised that I’m having the issue I am having in this thread.

That example is border-lining towards pay 2 win, which is not what these pets are, but if i was able to use that same #5 skill on another weapon set without using the gem store, i would kinda alright, tho i’m sure other would complain.

As an aside, you can go back and earn that point to get your GWAMM. At this point anyone can go buy EotN and such and earn HoM rewards. I’m only 3 points away from my Black Widow and I’m tempted at times to go back and get them.

Thanks for backing down from that “trolling” accusation. It was a little snarky at the end but I really only want that bow so I can entice a friend who likes MLP to play
“I’ll give you this bow that shoots ponies. No, seriously.”
The description of “imagine if your fifth skill was greyed out” . . . you reached, but that’s okay. It’s your right to.
Frankly, while I can understand the frustration (I will probably not go digital deluxe because I’d like to spend my gems on other things if/when I purchase them) . . . I think it’s less serious than some of the other concerns floating around here. Guild Missions, Laurels, Ascended gear . . . I think those have far more teeth and impact than this problem.
And I think that simply removing them from the UI unless you have them would not solve the problems of completionists wanting the pets. They wouldn’t see the spots anymore but they know it’d be there. Waiting, lurking . . .

The number of points you have in HOM has nothing to do with the GWAMM title.
The GWAMM title is given for completing 30 titles of the 43 available ones.
As to HOM, what is stopping you from going back and getting your last point?
I’m fine with there being extra rewards I can’t get, but I wish I could hide the empty slots in my pet window.

Sounds fine to me. A little checkbox to show or hide stuff you don’t have would be nice.
That’s unfortunate.
But HoM stuff are exclusive to GW1 Vets only.
It’s a reward for our years of loyalty. Competitionist or not, you do not fall into that category, and I’m sorry that you can’t complete your pet collection :\
Really? I was looking through all my pets after having all the zones explored to see which ones I’m missing so I could go back and find them. Then I discover that I need HoM points for the 4 that I’m missing?
I understand that they have the same abilities that other pets already have and are just skins, but still really? I was ok with the entire tab of achievs devoted to HoM points, completely understand the “god amongst mere mortals” title, and I’m ok with the fiery greatsword skin being exclusive to HoM as well. But when I see 4 “grayed out pets” in my action bar that I need to devote several hours into another game to unlock, that’s when it starts to get frustrating for me. Why can’t I unlock rewards in the game that I’m actually playing? I mean, that makes sense right? Just frustrated, I’m a completionist and I was hoping the pets I was missing were rare spawns/hidden in JPs or something interesting but it’s disappointing to find out that if I want them I’m playing the wrong game.
As a side note, it does kind of bug me to see the mist fire elite skill grayed out on all my chars too, but that I can understand because at least even if you do have to pay for it, it’s unlocked within this game.
Edit:
Two main issues that separate the pets from the other HoM rewards.
1). It is skill/action bar related. Even though they share the same skills as other pets, they have a unique spot in the combat interface. It is a profession specific mechanic, not simply a “skin.”
2) The grayed out portraits feel tacky and coercive. I have to look at them every time I change pets. If you must include them as HoM only, don’t toss it in everyone’s UI.
Hope that clears things up and puts less people on the defensive.
You realize that it takes for a casual player quite a long time to get the 30 points needed for both pets right?
You need around 7million ingame gold to get th 30 points.
For grinders thats around 500ish hours.
For investors about 100 hours.
Its still quite long and I would feel insulted in you had the skins I took forever to get.
That’s unfortunate.

I have bought many pre order games that gave exclusive stuff, then ppl able to buy them 2-3 months later after the game was released. (exclusive items as dlc.)
So plz we have had over 6 months of exclusive items.
Maybe it is time for anet to charge a small fee to unlock them.
btw i got almost all of them unlocked, but still i would not cry if anet charged a fee for ppl to get them.
at least the money is going towards anets funds for future expansions.

I would have a problem with it if the HoM pets were better than their counterparts, but they are either equal, or worse (lower health, iirc). I would also have a problem with it if not getting the pets interfered with gaining some sort of title, but they do not.
It does not affect the “profession mechanic” when you switch between 2 pets only for the combat aspect, and the HoM pets have better counterparts available.
You do not need the pets, you want the pets – just like a few days ago someone was complaining that they needed the HoM Heavy Mask skin because not having it broke the game.
HoM rewards are a nod to GW1 players. They are skins and minis.
We knew that there were going to be rewards in 2007. We knew what the rewards were in 2010.
If you wanted them, you could have worked for them. If you didn’t care, there’s no advantage to having them.
If you need a checkbox to hide HoM rewards, that’s fine by me.
If you want to purchase the HoM skins with gems/in-game gold, that’s a great way to kitten people off.

The third option which is the cheapest and easiest solution is simply not bother worrying about the ones you can’t get.
Look at it from this perspective. Mini pets. There are several that I wanted to have but I didn’t have the opportunity to get in the game. The slots will be empty. Yes I still want them but guess what… I get over not having them. They don’t ruin my experience with the game.
Enjoy what you have instead of focusing on what you don’t.
For grinders thats around 500ish hours.
For investors about 100 hours.
Not only that (and that’s wicked fast in my opinion, particularly since I don’t imagine there’s much of a marketplace left) but IIRC they’d likely have to be the right 500 or 100 hours….
If memory serves – admittedly always a dicey proposition with me – Lucky/Unlucky could only realistically be ground (grinded?) during Canthan New Year. I also seem to remember that even so, it would take two of them (standing AFK in the Rings for pretty much the whole multi-day event – without d/c) if that was your only source…..
Don’t even get me started about the original (timed) Drunkard. And ask the folks who have the original (and non-Kilroy) Survivor how their PTSD is doing….
I honestly don’t recall if there were enough other achievements on that track that you could get GWAMM without at least one of those four. For my part, as a casual albeit with well over 500 hours but a mere 17 HoM points, I certainly never got close on any of them. I wouldn’t recommend that grind to anyone just for a few skins!
Good times. Good times.
