Do you need the previous elite specialization from HoT in order to get the new elite specialization in PoF.

As you can have PoF without having HoT, you do not need to have the HoT elite specs.

No.

You can still glide in PoF maps, but there are no updrafts and everything in these new maps is designed to be accessible with only PoF mounts.

^I think the OP was asking about Elite Specializations rather than Masteries.

And, no, OP, you only need Path of Fire to access the Elite Specializations offered in Path of Fire. However, if you want to access the Heart of Thorns Elite Specializations, you will need access to the Heart of Thorns expansion.

Good luck.

My bad, sorry.

Each set of elite specs comes with separate expansion. HoT elites are only available for HoT owners. PoF elites only for those who buy PoF.

Since all (we assume more could be released later) elites occupy same spec slot you can not have multiple elite specs active same time. If you got HoT elite and you then get access to and activate PoF elite, your HoT will be replaced with PoF elite.

I think that people that own HoT will have an advantage. They can unlock the elite spec faster as they can gather HP in HoT and save them for PoF.

No. HoT xp and points are different from xp and points you get in PoF maps. Just like central tyria masteries and xp are different.

You’re thinking of masteries again.

Hero Points (used to unlock skills and specialisations/traits) are interchangable. You get enough from leveling to 80 to unlock all the core skills and specs and then can collect them from Hero Challenges in Core Tyria (which give 1 point each) or HoT (which give 10 points each) and use them to unlock your elite spec. (But again they’re interchangable, if you do Hero Challenges before level 80 you can use those points on your core specs and then use the ones from later levels for the elite.)

My ranger has got all the Hero Challenges in Core Tyria and is just missing a few in HoT maps and she’s got over 200 unused Hero Points, so she should be able to unlock most, if not all, of the Soulbeast spec as soon as PoF is released.

On the other hand my other characters have no spare points because they haven’t even collected enough to complete the HoT specs. In some cases I might even end up putting PoF points into the HoT specs because I’d rather complete them first than get the new one.

uhuh, I was wrong, sorry.

I would like to say the whole system is just way to complicated, but it could be just me not caring enough about HoT.

P.S. Had to check and it turns out my character has 361 unspent Hero Points

My question is what if I want to level a HoT elite spec, such as Chronomancer, but don’t wnat to play HoT zones? Can I just level it in PoF? I’m guessing yes, but would rather know than guess lol.

How can you “prefer it” when we couldn’t even test any of the new elite specs yet?

Yes, you can level it anywhere once you have unlocked it by buying the expansion.

You don’t really “level” an elite spec, at least not in a traditional sense of gaining experience. You just spend hero points to progress it. And hero points are universal, there’s no such thing (at least in the current game) as regional hero points or anything. A hero point from core Tyria is exactly the same as hero point from the Maguuma areas, the only difference being that hero challenges in HoT give 10 hero points where in core Tyria a hero challenge only gives 1.

We don’t know for sure how much the PoF elite specs are going to cost and how many hero points are going to be available in PoF total. You should be able to spend the PoF hero points on the HoT elite spec, since we’ve had no indication they’re making a new type of hero point for PoF only. At this point the only question is if PoF has enough “spare” hero points to fully unlock both the PoF elite spec and the HoT elite spec. Unless you don’t want to unlock the PoF elite spec at all and just want the HoT spec, I guess.

My guess on that would be probably not, as even if they keep the cost the same, the HoT specs cost 250 hero points to fully unlock and that’d mean PoF alone would need over 500 hero points, which would be a lot. As a point of reference, the core game + HoT have just over 600 combined. And that’s assuming they don’t increase the cost of PoF elite specs to prevent people who have a lot of spare hero points right now from just starting PoF and insta-leveling their elite spec to max right away.

My thoughts exactly, but wanted to verify as maybe something was said by Anet. All my Google searches didn’t find anything, so thought I’d ask here. Thanks for the reply.

They could though. If they had 10 point Hero Challenges. At 20 per map, that is 200 points per map. It would only take 2.5 zones to reach 500. This is mere speculation though. I just know that usually devs. want as many players as possible in new zones so their latest, highest priced, content has a high pop. Then again they don’t want old content being a ghost town either as new players leveling up might start to think the game is dead. So, there is reason for Anet to force peeps back to old content too. So one can only guess at this point. I just hope they set it up in a way that if I want to play exclusively in PoF on my 80s that I can.

Seeing there were elite-specific NPCs dotted around the PoF preview area, I guess new elites could become available through some quest you complete in PoF area.

The Crystal Oasis loading screen showed 5 Hero Challenges for the map, so I don’t think there will be 20 per map. The Hero Challenges is Crystal Oasis awarded 10 Hero Points per challenge.

Unless, the ‘quests’ were disabled for the demo, which is possible, the Elite Specialization NPCs only offered lore concerning Elite Specializations. Plus, there were only 2 in the part of the map we could access.

PoF is standalone, therefore you do not need to unlock the HoT elite spec before going for the one in PoF.

If you did everything in the game you’ll have 364 hero points available. The HoT specializations required 250, so if they keep it the same, you’d be able to fully unlock the PoF elite specs without touching a PoF zone. Although I really doubt the PoF specs will need 250, it wouldn’t make any sense to allow you to unlock them without even touching PoF.

Considering you can max HoT elites without ever taking a step into a HoT area (214 core Tyria hero points and heroic notarys in wvw) I do believe the next elite spec will not be all to different. The major limiting factor might be that the new elite specs might be tied to story progress.
