why does everyone say it is 50euros? (or is it 50 dollars?)
it says 45 euros for me
technically the 100 euro version would be worth it alone for the gem items (finisher 500 gems?, charslot 800 gems, 4000 gems extra)
+ you get the glider skin + guildhall decoration + mini rytlock
so if you have use for those items the 100 euro version is definitly worth it
otherwise take the 45 euro version
(edited by Orangensaft.7139)
Why are current players paying as much as the new players? New players get core game AND the expac while the current players get kittened for having to pay the same price while getting half of the package?
Looks like im taking a break from this game, ill come back when the price is more, reasonable.

My guess is to attract new players as it was announced at E3. People are always claiming the game population is dying. Well one way to help with that is to find a way to attract new customers with some extra bonuses for buying the game.

Way to kick all your fans in the nuts with this A.net
50?! Is that a pricing error?! How do you even justify this price?!
“but it includes the base game too!!”
So?
I’m fairly sure that 95% of the people who are getting HoT already have GW2.
How about you just do the reasonable thing and just drop the Base GW2 game (really, nobody cares about this) and have JUST HoT for 20 bucks.
People up in arms already over the price. Sjeeez. It’s aimed at new players that the core-game is included.
You’re just paying the normal expansion price.
To access the BLTC, you have to be in game.
In game.
IN GAME.
Putting up an option to buy the expansion to “be prepared for Heart of Thorns” while only having one very small text entry in the “Standard” option stating it includes the core game is simply a desperate cash grab on behalf of ANet.
They’re HOPING that tons of players will click buy without thinking, dangling carrots like exclusive titles, skins and beta access in front of said players.
This is how pricing should be:
Standard – USD$19.99, includes character slot
Deluxe – USD$29.99, Standard plus fluff stuff
Ultimate – USD$49.99, Deluxe plus the 4000 gems
All 3 versions get the title and beta access. This is for people who already own the game of course.
But the thinly veiled attempt to get people to buy ANOTHER account (this assumes the single HoT key can’t be added to multiple accounts) while in game is just frikkin ridiculous.
Why are current players paying as much as the new players? New players get core game AND the expac while the current players get kittened for having to pay the same price while getting half of the package?
My guess is to attract new players as it was announced at E3. People are always claiming the game population is dying. Well one way to help with that is to find a way to attract new customers with some extra bonuses for buying the game.
But they can do that without kittening their current playerbase
Plain and simple Arenanet. $50 with no additional character slot is a no sale for me. I bought the digital version at launch for cheaper.
I’m not going to buy the game twice. I will not pay for something I already own even if there is an expansion attached.
I don’t know why I was complaining about it. I was expecting $40 anyways. I’m happy to pay $50, just wish it included an additional character slot.
People please read the pre-purchase FAQ:

Isn’t $40 – $50 pretty normal for an MMO expansion ?
Whomever came up with this price point should be fired. Trust me, I’ve spent a ton on this game and was looking forward to this. Not buying right now.
This just proves no company is willing to be fair and must do crap like this to try and mess with people.
I don’t need another core game. I won’t be buying unless there’s a straight up account upgrade for HoT. This isn’t about the money. It’s just shady.
Well, now we know why they put the core game on 75% sale recently. Because with this sales strategy purchasing core game alone is…less than optimal.
There is no justification in making me buy and expansion that does not offer NEARLY as much content as the original game AND pretty much force us to buy it or just not touch the game forever.
Isn’t $40 – $50 pretty normal for an MMO expansion ?
HoT appears to be much smaller in content than any expansion in that price range I’ve ever seen. Just how I see it. I could be wrong.
Are y’all complaining when they do promotions? Do you ask refunds years later when they sell the game for 10$?
Disgusted by this outrage.
If it’s too high for the content that’s currently on the plate, then that’s fair.
But the price is in the ballpark of expansions of other developers (give or take 10 bucks). The core-game being free is just another promotion focussed on attracting new players. Which is a good and awesome thing.

That makes sense.
lol, I just knew they were going to do something like this. I prepurchased GW2 based on the goodwill generated by GW1. I will not be prepurchasing HoT.

It is a straight up account upgrade for current players. It is the game plus the upgrade for new customers.

At this point, you can get a full download Heroic Edition license for GW2 for US$20 on Amazon.
Lopping that off the tiers sounds fairly reasonable to me.
Asking me to pay for a full game key when I have spent years paying for not only my license but a regular trickle of what amounts to hundreds if not a couple thousands in gems is insulting.
But, that’s what monopolies do. We can kitten till our throats are scratchy, but what it comes down to is there’s only one provider and they don’t have any real incentive to be responsive because we aren’t unionized. It’s an interesting concept, but it will never happen.
Where are the full sized images of those tiny tiny tiny tiny thumbnails is shows of the bonus items? Seriously why would they not put them on the pre-purchase page of the website? All that’s there is the video…
Geez. I was thinking maybe $30 for the expansion alone. I wasn’t expecting a price that included what I already have. What is the title you get when you pay for the original game (again) and the expansion. Sucker?
And then the price for a character slot on top of that with the basic, or delete a char.
(edited by Just a flesh wound.3589)
These are going to pop up everywhere huh?
The expansion is $50 regardless of new or veteran players. The new players will have an opportunity to join the rest of us veterans by purchasing HoT for the full price which comes with a ‘Free’ core game. It would be really unfair for the new players if they charged $20 on top of $50 for the expansion.
+1 to original post.
There will be a price later on for ONLY expansion. However Anet needs money now for beta etc. As a past gw2 beta player many years ago I will be waiting for the price. If its core + expansion only after release ill wait for prices to lower….like $9.99?lol
Feels somewhat overpriced, but I’m still okay with this price I guess. The major problem in my eyes is that for $50 you don’t even get a free character slot when the new class is one of the major features.
I was going to freak out and demand new players buy the core game for $10 instead of getting it for $0 but then I saw I ate more than $10 worth of snacks in the time it took to make this post and I realized that amount of money isnt really worth whining over. But I have to whine about something to post on the forums so I guess it will be about people whining about the $10 I was going to whine about, which ill do as soon as I wash the cheetos dust off my keyboard and figure out a witty way to do so.
TLDR JUST BUY THE STUPID THING AND GET OVER IT. $50 IS LIKE 4 TRIPS TO BURGER KING AND THE XPAC WILL HAVE MORE CONTENT THAN THAT. NOT A LOT OF MONEY AT ALL.

No you get 5 character slots since it’s a new account.
I’m gonna be the one to admit i’m definitely buying the expansion, even if they don’t give us an upgrade only version. I loved GW and I love GW2, but from what they have told us 50$ is too much. Also, no free character slot for standard (especially at that price!), come on guys.

Good grief, for the 4th time or so, please read the FAQ. It isn’t a new account unless you are a new customer or decide to just buy it as a new account. For existing players it is just the upgrade.
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ
Even ingame when purchasing the addon it states “includes Guild Wars 2 core game”… that’s a bit meh. I feel like “I’m in the core game right now, why am I forced to get a second?”
There is no upgrade only it seems.

The core-game being free is just another promotion focussed on attracting new players. Which is a good and awesome thing.
The core game is NOT free.
The current pricing of the expansion includes the base game. Typical games are around $50 new. GW2 has been out three years and has seen a significant price drop, in the range of $12 to $19 in the US.
Expansions typically cost anywhere from $19.99 to $50 depending on how much content they add. Everything I’ve seen of HoT leads me to believe that it is NOT a significant content upgrade, and falls well short of other MMO titles.
So that $49.99 price tag? That’s for the base game + expansion, which I would have priced at $20 + $20, which is still less than ANet is asking. I can see the extra ten bucks being for beta weekends, but IIRC the original GW2 betas didn’t upcharge for it.
Look at the “Ultimate” Edition. $100. $50 of that is the gems, $20 for the expansion itself, $20 for the game, and then $10 for the fluff.
And unless you get two keys so you can apply HoT to both your existing account and the new account you get with the combo purchase, there’s no point in buying it. Also, none of the HoT pre-purchase FAQs mention the fact that the expansion pre-order includes another account that you’ll basically throw away, seeing as how its likely you’ll only get the single HoT key.
There is nothing awesome and good about what ANet just did, and anyone who defends it is kidding themselves.

If you eat that much junk food, may I recommend a good dietitian for you?
I will personally be happier in my life and my gaming if I never see you in the heart of maguuma. Please do not purchase this. It’s too much for you.
GW2, home of the friendliest community in the MMO scene…
Oh we’re extremely open and welcoming. That’s friendly. This isn’t about being welcoming, this is not listening to the QQing of the people who are already here.
Well don’t listen to it, then? No one is asking you to come into this thread and defend the price and be rude to others. You can express yourself in a kinder fashion, yes? I know you can!
As for me, I’m holding off on pre-purchasing in hopes that they will substitute the base game for a character slot. That will make me happy. Or maybe have it where if you “upgrade” your current account that it will automatically add a character slot.
Well then, I suppose it’s worthwhile that I never defended anything. I’m being no more rude than anyone else. If anyone here thinks that coming and complaining about the price will make any difference or saying they’re getting kicking in the gut, they’re hugely mistaken. It’s just as much my right to say that you’re complaints about the situation are unnecessary as it is for you to come and complain in the first place. And if you don’t like seeing someone say that, then I will throw it right back in your face, you don’t have to come here and read it.

Good grief $50 to upgrade each of my accounts. Yeah I’ll just play something else. If it was $40 to upgrade then I could see that and would probably whip out my credit card and upgrade all 3 of my accounts. $10 isn’t much money but it’s the principle.

Well that is your decision. It’s your money so do with as you wish. No one is forcing you to buy the upgrade and the good news is you still get to play the core game all you want at no extra cost if you so choose.

I’m kind of glad I didn’t spend any money to get me a second or third account.

No, not free at all. If the basic upgrade path for existing players was $35, there wouldn’t be such ill feelings and complaints. Especially when they’ve been putting accounts on sale and many of us have purchased additional accounts. Now it’s going to fracture our game play as Anet will be lucky if players buy one xpac, let alone a handful of them at these prices.

This. So much this. I should have known when they put the game on sale for $10 that this was going to happen.
