Base game is on a trial version. Its just so its meaningless to buy the standalone basegame when every expac includes it.

trial lets you beat the whole game with pretty minimal limitations. Buying the expack removes limitations, but the base content is still the same. Just level limits(most are irreverent on a single max level character), character limits, are just removed.
Base game is 100% free, it is not a trial. A trial would only let you progress a little into the game! Since core is now free, you can play from start to finish on any core race and profession. You cant buy base anymore, because … you guessed it. Its free.
