"HoT is our vision for character progression"

Forum trolls don’t need “details” or “facts” to believe that any change coming up is a disaster.
People like OP are the reason why Anet was silent all the time. Twisting everything Anet says to something negative.
They’re basically saying that everything is continuing the way it has been and there’s nothing that would change. They’re selling the expansion on progression.

Did you think the expansion would re-release the game?
Listen how silent the audience is when they say that collecting is what we’re playing GW2 for.

i’m gonna quote myself:
Regarding so wanted expansion and human nature:
“Give us expansion, it has been 2 years, you suck!”
“I hear they are going to make an expansion, it will probably suck”
“Oh the expansion is here it’s awesome’”
TWO WEEKS LATER
“This expansion sucks”
“This expansion in old now”
“GIVE US THE NEW EXPANSION YOU SUCK ANET”
…..yea.
i’m personally thrilled in what i hear but most people, being people….you know, will whine and whine and whine no matter what a net does. so…eh. just let this thread be lost and forgotten like it will be in 30 min.
wow…it’s freaking nothing.

- People complain when something is wrong. They don’t complain when something is right. The way this company operates is that they create sub-par content, hardly ever update it and then move on to create something else. That’s what I expected to hear and that’s what we got. What we didn’t get is aknowledgement that not everything they’ve done has been up to their standards and that they’d step up their game in the future.
They apparently believe that the problem with the game is lack of progression. Do you agree that this is a problem? I think this is very much not a problem. On the contrary they’ve regularly added new gold sinks, tokens and tiers.

People, players, have been telling them that since the game launched.

Sure they do. All of the time. You see, anything that is right for one person is wrong for someone else.

Game 1: Tetris. Crashes all the time.
Game 2: Tetris. Never crashes.
Would someone pick game 1 over game 2?
Game 1: WvW. The biggest decision player can make for winning is selecting a server with more population and coverage.
Game 2: WvW. Winning is based on personal accomplishments and teamwork.

So once we completed the new map and so acquired all the useless masteries, our characters still won’t progress, nor vertically or horizontally like usual ? Their system is tuned to last a week/a month ?

I’ve seen far more people complain about stagnation than a lack of progression.
From what was presented i have to agree. Game needs more content not more meaningless character progression that you’ll soon forget. How to survive in a jungle, skills you’ll most likely never use or be able to use outside of the jungle.
They showed a map, i doubt it’ll be split up into multiple zones so i’ll just say it’s one zone. So atm with the information we all have i say this update is no different than the Karka zone and the crafting upgrade they did ( crafting to 500 skill ).
And no, i actually don’t want to say: “i told you so”, when patch goes live.
@OP:
I felt the whole thing seemed a bit lackluster as well, but I do think that a lack of (perceived at least) character progression has been an issue for a lot of players.
Having listened to their new ideas it all really depends on how they implement it: it could either be fun and rewarding and add hundreds of hours of gaming (that really depends on the actual amount of content this update will bring – who else was surprised that they didn’t even hint at a dungeon or five), or drytop 2.0 where you can roleplay Avatar and make friends with the naavi and finally digivolve your character into druidmon (a class which focuses on group healing in a game where max dps set ups for everyone is the meta) and gimmicktastically glide around like in aion.
In all reality it’ll probably be somewhere in between – some aspects will make the game genuinely more fun, others will make us shake our heads in disbelief. Why do I think that? Because of their track record of “improvements” over the last few years – some were really great (account wardrobe!!!!) others were very meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
I do agree with you that it would’ve been really nice if they had used those brief moments of reflection on past updates not to pat themselves on the back, but to genuinely reflect on how decisions have panned out and what direction they want to progress the game in (patronizing gated NPE-type of stff vs open world do what you want original design philosophy).

It’s going to be multiple zones.

I have seen people complain about stagnation as well. Stagnation is a lack of forward movement (progression) for some people.

A game that doesn’t function isnt much of a game, but I will give you that one. It is pretty safe to assume that a game that cannot be played will not be preferred over one that can. Still kind of an odd example IMO.
As to the WvW example, I know that there are people who would not enjoy being unable to zerg to victory without any actual personal accomplishment. Simple put there are plenty of people who are either lazy or lacking in sufficient skill to win otherwise.

- Account wardrobe and getting rid of culling are examples of improvements that are non-conditionally improving the game. I haven’t seen anyone complaining about those clearly because there’s nothing to complain about. Things are usable and working. Great.
What about the controversial updates then? Adding new tier of gear gives illusion of progress, but makes playing alt characters more difficult. It also contributes to inequality between players who have played for long time and those who are just starting. It doesn’t make the game better to focus on “progression”. It makes the game worse. This kind of focus was their argument for selling the expansion and cause of disappointment.

Wait… you’re aware they aren’t adding new levels or new tiers of gear right?

- Yes, they’re adding mastery system instead. It was so tragicomical how Mike was careful about not wrecking the “max level, top tier equipment” system. At this point it seemed like the audience would be expected to respond “oh thank heavens!” as if being given a gift. All I could think about Is this how far your ambition goes?!

The only progressions will be new legendaries, masteries and profession specialization.
What’s wrong about Mastery? It’s like Lightbringer or other Titles.

Yeah, but that’s fundamentally only adding depth the game, not progression in the sense that you’re talking about. The game needs more depth.

I said at the time that I preferred (and still do) the pre-wardrobe system. Other people posted similarly. It was pretty clear that the majority prefer the wardrobe system though. Keep in mind that I didn’t say that each side would be equally represented. Merely that something that is liked by one will be disliked by another.
Some people want, even need, progression such as a new tier of gear in order to continue enjoying the game over the long haul. I don’t get it myself. I was very disappointed with the addition of ascended, but others love(d) it.
New skills/traits/weapons(for a given profession) has been requested by players since shortly after the game launched, and perhaps even before.
