HoT peeked my interest.
It’s a pretty decent population. One of the more populated MMOs for sure. It doesn’t have WoW,‘s population but it’s certainly up there in the top five, and probably closer to the top 3.
A lot of people enjoy this game for what it is. There are people who want other experiences and in my experience they don’t enjoy the game.
Depends a lot on what you want, though I suspect HoT is going to shake things up quite a bit.
It has a very good population, even before the $10 sale brought in a mass of players I found no shortages of people to play with and with the megaservers system even during the slow times of the day it never feels particularly empty.
Enjoying this game is entirely up to you because there’s no gear treadmill and as such the goals are totally self created and driven. You can spend 2 months getting gold just to get a cool looking skin or after you have your character geared in 2-3 weeks you can go to wvw and never look at pve again or you can spend your time mastering all the dungeons and fractal content + more…you choose.

Fractals, the Arah dungeons and some of the story achievements are the only bits of endgame where you can expect to fail on a given attempt (although you might want to rage quit on one or two jumping puzzles). So if your endgame enjoyment is determined by having stuff that not everyone will succeed on the there’s really only fractals that will keep you going.
Population is OK. Most dungeon parties fill reasonably quickly (except for the harder ones that people prefer not to do with pugs) and lower tier WvW can be pretty patchy off peak peek pique high usage times.
