I was going to crank out some map completion from the core pre-HoT maps until release and I heard from a few people that it would be better to wait until HoT releases so I can get exp towards masteries/elite specializations/etc. while doing them

Is this true? Would I benefit more from map completion from the vanilla maps after HoT releases?

Towards masteries yeah.
Same reason I’m going to instant 80 my rev, so all exp goes to masteries.

Imo, yes, with some reservations depending on how people like to play.

If you prefer to level by doing map completion, then do what’s fun for you. But if you have level 80s and don’t have map completion then I would wait. The reason is the Mastery lines. Exp to a level 80 now is wasted. After the expansion, exp to a level 80 progresses a mastery line, and doing map completions can give a fair amount of exp.

Personal story reward XP also gets awarded when you click on the accept. So you may be able to complete a personal story item, hop off to the verdant brink and accept the reward to get XP onto the masteries there.

It’s been a while since I’ve done cities and maps. iirc cities and maps give you a chest to open. The chest can undoubtably be opened on the new maps. Whether or not the exp will go towards the Maguuma lines or not is another question.

I’m on a holding pattern with my latest level 80. I stopped doing maps (and the hero points) until after launch once I realized how many millions of exp the Masteries are going to require to complete.

All that exp will go to core map masteries. Do we even know anything about those masteries?

We know two of them. The Mentor one which starts with letting you help others out and ends with the “loot vacuum” skill, and the Legendary one that lets you build precursors and legendaries.

So yeah, actually, we know quite a lot about them.

(edit: I left out the Fractals one on purpose in case that only progresses while in FotM).

I seen somewhere months ago we will get a mastery point for map completion retroactively. My question is, will it be one point for 100% map completion in total regardless how many times its been done or will we get a point each character that gets 100% map?

That is a rip off for those of us who have done Map Completion on numerous characters.

Ravion Hawk, it would have been awesome had we got one point per character. I have 26 with 100% and 10 at 99% waiting for HoT before I finish them. But I got to thinking. I enjoy leveling alts and doing map completion. Would spend several hours a day on that pretty much every day. However there are people who don’t enjoy that yet they spend as much time doing dungeons or whatever. Since there are people who put in equal or more time than I, their time is no less valuable. So if I was rewarded for my time they should be as well. I can see why anet made this call.

26 characters with 100% map completion? Good lord
