Poster’s Notes: I took some liberties with adjusting the more colorful nicknames the OP used and formatting.

According to my calculations <s>(and assuming I understood “I got 1.33s per envelope” correctly as the average coin drop…)</s> the Homemade Envelopes are worth 8.64-12.21 silver in terms of contents, on average. They are currently trading at 18-21 silver, meaning you’d lose money even if you bought them for custom buy offers.

Alternatively, you can sell them for 18 silver and use that (less fees) to buy the stuff you want.

On the other hand, if you’re hoping to get lucky, you only need a few extra drops of buns, dumplings, or golden rooster figurines. (Of course, on average, most of us aren’t going to be that lucky.)

A key caveat: the OP had 500% MF when opening. Veteran players won’t have much trouble hitting that; newer players might. See the wiki article on Magic Find to help you max out.

Key tips:

  • You can get <s>150%</s> 30% from Silverwastes Perserverence
  • Halloween foods & utilities offer cheap MF.
  • Don’t forget about your own boosters, especially celebration/birthday.

tl;dr aside from using these for dailies, most people are better off selling these on the TP, buying what they want.

fixed technical errors

He just seems to be a redditor for a month though.

Edit: Some comments regarding your 2nd post:

  • The 1.33s per envelope result from the gold value of the common trophies divided by 1000
  • Perseverence only applies extra MF when opening Lost Bandit Chests, so useless for envelopes
  • Disregarding opportunity cost (which is quite low) using a stack of fine Eol will earn you a couple of gold each by upgrading rare zodiac lanterns into exotic ones, so 7 stacks will net you some 10-20g extra

  • Perseverence only applies extra MF when opening Lost Bandit Chests, so useless for envelopes

The 30% is a permanent effect while you have the perseverence buff. The bonus MF attribute on top of this only applies to Bandit chests.

Yes that still applies, as it stacks intensity.
There’s two MF attributes on Perseverence, the 30% permanent, which stacks intensity (150% while in Silverwastes, regardless what you do/open, ergo, not useless for envelopes), and the Bonus which is only applied when you open Bandit chests (applies for 1 second).

Hero of The Wastes is worth noting and using too for an extra +50% Magic Find.

He just seems to be a redditor for a month though.

Since you & he are the same person (established when Rude Asura posted your API key), it seems churlish to pick that nit: you’ve posted a lot recently on Reddit and you’re reliability here doesn’t seem to be in doubt.

Some comments regarding your comments.

  • The 1.33s per envelope result from the gold value of the common trophies divided by 1000

Thanks for explaining; it wasn’t at all clear to me from repeated parsing.

Good point; fixed above.

  • Disregarding opportunity cost (which is quite low) using a stack of fine Eol will earn you a couple of gold each by upgrading rare zodiac lanterns into exotic ones, so 7 stacks will net you some 10-20g extra

One has the same opportunity for profit by purchasing the rare laterns (~1g) and upgrading (~5 g in mats), then selling for 9-10g (at least 8g after fees) for a 2g/lantern profit. That skips out the time required to acquire the envelopes, open them, & dispense with the other contents. In both cases, that depends on having enough fine luck for long enough to take advantage of the current panic-buy market.
