How Do You Utilize Alts?
I keep my two favs for PvE content and alternate when I feel like it. I have completion on one of them. I also have another char for pvp. The remaining 3 I’ll get to 80 and then forget, pending trait and game mechanic changes, because the builds I would like to do with them are not yet possible.
I have 8 80s, and while it is impossible to give them all love, it was crucial to the overall play experience for me to play them all. I prefer to jump into all aspects with a single toon then give them roles, but the Necro logs the bulk of PVP, the Guard the bulk of dungeons, and the Ranger the PVE.
After seeing the Reaper however, I will be playing the Necro solely.
Crystal Desert
PvE = Warrior/Ranger depending on my mood at the time.
WvW = Necro for zergs, mesmer for roaming.
Although I have every class @ 80 I use them as mules currently because I prefer the play style of the three I listed. I don’t PvP as I prefer my game play to be vitriol free (even though ANet want seems to want to cram it down our throats) so I cannot say what I might use there.
I have 11 chars, at the beginning the goal was to have 1 of each profession and station them on dungeon doors, with Main and a guard ready for fractals. Now that i dont do much dungeons these days most are n the mist for daily pvp reward. Still gonna make a 2nd ele and revenant for the lulz.
Firstly- key farming is definitely not an exploit, there have been red posts saying that it was ok. There have also been screenshots of A-net employees running the keyfarm, which I find pretty amusing
•I have 12 level 80s- most of these sit up on top of a JP to claim a little bit of loot every day.
•A couple of these 80s I use as a bit of extra bank space. One character has a load of wintersday loot on it, for example.
•1 of my 80s sits in LA for crafting and is also used for PvP.
•A different 80 I use for my PvE dailies- usually a char with 100%/very high map completion to make this a little easier. I often leave this guy outside a home instance for mining my nodes.
•I have 4 level 21-34 characters, which are also planted up at JPs for the chance of Silver Doubloons. These characters are in the middle of being levelled, I just haven’t gotten around to completing them yet.
•One slot designated for a key farming character- always have her ready and kitted out in the account-bound gear to save a bit of bank space.
•A couple of low characters with names that I wanted to reserve.
As for distribution of professions… I have 2 of each excluding Thief and Engi (they will be next though) and 3 guards. I have a male and female of each race and then a few more of my favourites.
EDIT: Forgot to add, I do a lot in order to get BL Keys. I do PS on all of my 80s to get the 3 keys awarded there, LS2 episode Tangled Paths to get the 1 rewarded there… and as much map completion as I can for the chance of materials and BL keys too.

I tend to be serially monogamous with alts. I’ll play a warrior in everything for a while, get bored, play a mesmer in everything for a while, get bored, etc..
war/guard
the rest are mules
I tend to hop around a lot on my characters. I tend to favor my light armored characters more than others, but I think they all see some play. Originally I had intended on making multiples of my favorite classes so that I could outfit 1 for pve, 1 for wvw, and 1 I could leave in pvp. It didn’t work out that way….
Most people make alts to be able to complain they can’t use them or play them because they have to play through content to progress them.
So by having alts they can make threads like this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Unlock-all-Waypoints/page/3#post5087037
Just delete posts that are derailments.
I think we’d see alts used a lot more after the trait unlocks are unlinked from exploration.
PvP
Retired from PvE 5 months ago, bringing 18 characters (14 level 80s I think) to PvP…
Why so many? Build differentiation…
i have 12 character slots, and i hop around on them to do different things depending on who im feeling like playing!
I play with them.
I know it sounds glib, but I do. I have them primarily for when I’m in the mood to play “X” that day. If i want to play with them in a map I’ve not opened and feel like running to it, then I do that. if not, then I switch to another toon or just opt to not play if I’m not feeling any other class/playstyle for the night.
Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!
I have every class at 80, and a few doubles. Why? I usually have at least two races in mind for a class, and it’s nice to not have to switch gear and builds.
Ele – PvE mostly and some WvW. Never considered an alt ele because I think human is perfect and I use the same zerker gear in PvE and WvW.
Mesmer #1- mostly WvW and working on map completion
Mesmer #2 – same build as mesmer #1, though mixed and matched pieces of ascended armor I wasn’t using on the others. I just wanted a Norn mesmer because of the animation, and that horrified face they make with greatsword autoattack.
Ranger #1 – longbow/GS whatever build I thought looked good, mainly survival stuff for running around maps in PvE, mostly WBT.
Ranger #2 – Condi spec for WvW roaming and PvP
Necro #1 – Condi spec for WvW roaming and PvP
Necro #2 – Level 50, but will be more of a power necro
Engi – Used pretty much solely in WvW. I love killing people on walls >:)
Warrior #1 – Mostly PvE, rarely WvW zergling
Warrior #2 – I wanted a heavy class Charr. Used same as other warrior, but he looks much more fantastic with the moot
Guardian – Hardly sees the light of day. Sometimes I take her to Teq since she’s decked out in PTV gear.
Thief – PvE, as I’m really bad at playing thief in a pvp environment ,_,
After my second necro is leveled, I’ll probably stop until the new trait system is out. Luckily I had one of each class before they made us spend gold and skill points on them… So when I do make an alt, they’re pigeonholed into a single build for cost effectiveness.
Right now I am utilizing alts for 100% map completion to get the gifts. Then, I figured since I have multiples of some of my favorite professions I will spec each of them to a specific task and when I do content they are optimized for, that’s the character I will use.
I still main a Sylvari Ranger, though, and he’s my favorite out of all the characters I have made so far. He does well in PvE and holds up fairly well in dungeons, too. I use my Asura Necro in PvP, and sometimes toss my Human Mesmer into EotM or WvW
I’ve tended to use them for different aspects of the game.
- My engineer is the only one who has done SW
- My Engi, Warrior and Ele are the ones who do WvW
- Thief and Ele are for doing dailies (when I was still doing them)
- Necro sits by a rich plat node
- Mesmer is relegated to the rare times I want to make an 18 slot bag
- Guard is for playing with friends
- Ranger waits to see if Druid allows me to play an effective archer with no pet
All of my alts are parked at “high” yield JP chests. Only my main and my one remaining sub 80 spend all of their time collecting chest rewards. My elementalist is also in Plains of Ascalon so I can do AC with her if I want to.

It doesn’t, it has nothing to do with archery. You get a staff, so it’s all based around that, and you don’t lose your pet anyway.

TY 4 the FYI. Seriously, you cannot lose the pet? ANet, what’s wrong with you?
RP is the main thing, but I did start out making one of each profession. Though I had double 80’s in some before getting my first 80 in others.
Thief Human — main for new game stuff, main for RP, I use him for SW so he carries the chest keys and shovels. 500 LW, 400 Chef.
Mesmer First Asura-- shelved for now. Never got much RP and Asura don’t seem to click for me. When monthly JPs were a thing she was my JP alt.
Mesmer Second Human— main for fractals and dungeons, she has lots of RP right now.
Mesmer Third Sylvari— RP and he is my LS secondary (I keep Thief, Mesmer, Guardian up to date for working on achieves).
Necromancer First Human — mostly shelved, mostly pure RP due to bag space limits. She’s my light armor clothes horse and has a ton of costume armors. 500 Tailor.
Necromancer Second Sylvari — RP
Necromancer Third Asura — Shelved, made him to see another racial PS line.
Warrior First Human — RP. 500 Armorsmith, 500 Weaponsmith.
Warrior Second Sylvari — Shelved, just wanted sylvari heavy armor.
Guardian First Sylvari — RP, Fractals/Dungeons with friends who don’t mind low dps. 500 Artificer, 500 Jeweler
Guardian Second Human — RP, LS achieves.
Engineer Norn — mild RP, 500 Huntsman, mostly shelved. Made so I’d have an 80 Eng.
Ranger Norn — Shelved. Made so I’d have an 80 Ranger.
Elementalist First Charr — Shelved. Made at launch, then I learned Ele isn’t my thing and her warband guild disbanded.
Elementalist Second Human — RP. Only level 42. Made to a guildie’s design as an RP nemesis. He should get his comeuppance soonish, after which I’ll have to do name/makeover and turn him into another RP alt once I have an idea for one.

The concept behind the Druid appears to be nature magic… more so than Nature Magic, I guess. So it seems non-conducive to removing the pet. That isn’t to say that a future Specialization couldn’t alter the pet into some sort of noncombat charm, or whatever. But based on how the Specializations have been effecting class mechanics it’s unreasonable to expect the pet to ever be removed entirely.

I have all classes to lvl 80, 2 low lvl chars and 1 slot for keyruns.
Ele, ranger, war, guard, mesmer and thief are geared full ascended for fractals and dungeons. I also may do pvp with any of them but thief.
Necro has exo zerks if I feel like going dungeons with it. Mostly used for pvp.
Lvl 80 engi and lvl 25 engi are storing my 200 ascended rings, and I don’t use them for anything else.
Lvl 20 ranger for storing other account bound loot and condi build for pvp.
Asura Engineer (80), my original main with over a thousand hours on it. Abandoned because there’s no point in buying anything for it (Ie. Armor, weapons, backpacks, all pointless)
Human Elementalist (80), my current main.
Sylvari Mesmer (80), AKA the puzzle fairy, because I enjoy jumping puzzles and most of my guildmates do not. Portals FTW.
Sylvari Warrior (63), my armorsmith/weaponsmith who I was leveling just to have a heavy armor/greatsword profession for skins, likely to be replaced by Revenant, which I see as the heavy armor peer of Engineer/Elementalist.
Human Thief (30), for a humanoid medium armor class. I’m fond of thieves in most games, but this one fails to hold my attention much.
Empty Slot (0), purchased when they were on sale, Revenant goes here.
All 8 chars at 80 with a 9th slot for keyfarming/name reserve for Revanant.
I play most characters in Fractals/Dungeons. (This means parking them anywhere is redundant as I WP to LA or dungeons too much)
Characters I don’t play:
Ranger – PvP daily/Parked in HoTM/Parked in Brisban for Iron Ore
Engineer – See above^
Necromancer – See above
I do play Necro in Fractals or HoTW sometimes ~
I’d like to play the other two classes too but honestly I prefer the main 5.
Just delete posts that are derailments.
They’re all parked at the end of a jumping puzzle. All of them.
I can’t have alts. In any game. Ever. I have a main that I play all the time. And then there are my former mains that I never play. So, in this game, all they do is open the chest once a day.
17 char slots
16 lvl 80’s
9 MAINS with 100% map
1 warrior DPS (SPEEDRUN/ PVE) (favorite)
1 ele DPS (SPEEDRUN/FRACTALS/PVE)(alt armor: Support(WvW)(favorite)
1 necro Healer/DPS (WvW) (favorite)
1 warrior Condi/DPS Hybrid for FUN (PvE,WvW) (favorite)
1 necro Condi/DPS Hybrid for FUN (PvE,(WVW)) (favorite)
1 ranger DPS for (WvW, Dungeons(l80 exp), PvE) (favorite)
1 guard Support/Heal/Tank (WvW/Fractals)
1 mesmer DPS/Condi Hybrid for FUN (PvE), alt armor: Condi (WvW)
1 thief DPS/Condi Hybrid for FUN or DPS for FUN (PvE,WvW)
7 alts
Often used:
1 guard healer/dps (Dungeons (l80 Exp)) (very often used)
1 ele healer/dps (Dungeons (l80 Exp)) (very often used)
1 ranger DPS/Condi Hybrid for FUN
1 engineer DPS armor, DPS/Condi Hybrid armor (dunno yet)
Rarely used:
(1 warrior Support/Heal (WvW/World Bosses))
(1 ranger Condi trapper (WvW))
(1 necro TerrorMancer (WvW))
15 of these 16 have ascended trinkets
14 of these 16 have at least 1 alternate armor
12 of these 16 have ascended weapons
9 of these 16 have world completion
5 of these 16 have ascended armor pieces
2 of these 16 have full ascended gear
2 of these 16 have a legendary
1 of these 16 has a second ascended armor
0 of these have ascneded underwater weapons.
I play most of them quite frequently I played over 6000 hours though my most used character has less then 20% of the total time.
Some things I noticed, I have 3 necro’s, 3 warriors, 3 rangers, all third characters are seldomly used as I carry gear or builds on the other 2 to make them well… too much atm. I expect this to change a bit when HOT arrives.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
(edited by PaxTheGreatOne.9472)
I get the feeling that I play this game very different from most players. I focus almost exclusively on open world PvE content; I don’t care much about dungeons or fractals or WvW or PvP.
Asura Necromancer – My main character, the first one I got to 80. My main goal with him is map completion, with a secondary focus on obtaining materials to max out my Artificing.
Human Guardian – My other main character, she’s also at 80. I play her when I’m in the mood for a more defensive playstyle, and I also collect materials to level up Weaponsmith and Armorsmith.
Sylvari Elementalist – I determined a long time ago that I wanted to play an elementalist, but I still haven’t really figured out how to play him. So he’s sitting pretty at level 20-something for now.
Sylvari Mesmer – This is the character I’m currently trying to level to 80, but it’s progressing slowly since I tend to jump around between characters, and I don’t play for exceptionally long periods of time anymore.
I also have a Charr Warrior, but I kind of hate him and I’m probably going to delete him soon, to be replaced with a Thief or Ranger (for now) or Revenant (when HoT drops).
Azman – Asura Necromancer, Kemena – Human Guardian
Emracool – Sylvari Elementalist, Lyra Lightbender – Sylvari Mesmer

That’s how i play as well. I have my guys and girls spread over the world enjoying different things with different motives. There’s plenty to do.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
For me I have 5 alts. Right now I’m going after the treasure hunter achievment so I run the events that drop the items I need with each of my characters. Right now I’m focusing on the Commissars Manifesto. So I do it with each one of my characters, and then take them somewhere else, usually orr, to farm for t5 mats before event starts again to avoid DR.
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
I like to have 1 of each class – particularly for the PvP dailies
And I also like to have my alts used as storage for when my bank fills up. Why pay 600 gems for 30 slots in your bank when you can have up to 100 slots (if you use 4 of the 20 slot Halloween bags like I do) for 200 gems more? Sure it requires a little more effort remembering which alt has what item, but it’s only a slight inconvenience for more space.
Main: Minion Necro. Decent for pugging unranked pvp (bruisers used to be useful in season 1 living world events)
Alt 1: Bezerker Warrior. Excels at solo dolyak escorts in the silverwaste (may I never see another one ever again) and speed clearing dungeons.
Alt 2: Engineer. Useful when the pvp daily reads “Engineer” and not “Necro”
Alt 3: Full heal Guardian. Utterly useless. But looks. FABULOUS.
My 7 level 80 alts have been relegated to the following purposes:
- JP Chest Farmer (4). The alt is parked at a JP for daily chest farming. They only move from this location via WvW map to access chest, merch, etc.
- Extra World Boss Runner (1), for times where I play long enough for a boss to spawn multiple times during my play session.
- Dragonite Ore Packmule (2) The number of my alts gaining this status will continue to grow until ANet gives us a dragonite convertor.
I have 17 lvl 80s.
Firstly I wanted an 80 of every profession. seeking that kept me playing.
Next I wanted a Norn of every profession..seeking that kept me playing..
Next I left an alt at each JP for the christmas event, seeking that star kept me playing
basically, while I run a fleet of characters, Alts and mains serve the same purpose, to be fun and keep me playing the game.
I am currently using 11 character slots:
8 for my level 80s of each profession and different races. Each has a different crafting discipline.
3 alts for Dragonhunter, Chronomancer and whatever the Warrior Specialization will be.
An extra slot for my key farmer, and one for my Revenant to be
I have far too many Humans and Syilvari, so all my new characters will be Charr, Asuran and Norn,
i use my warrior for dungeons
my engi for looks
my thief for ganking people and bragging bout my skills
same as thief with my ranger
and necro is work in progress
I have 4 characters on my main account. I do not consider any of them alts, however they do have a specialization. Each takes an area of the map and/or boss. Not that the others can not do it, just that I like to be able to swap to throwing healing around when fighting teq or letting pets take the lava damage with the megadestroyer.
I do have an alt account. That is for exploring other character options, having a personal guild, and so on.
bank overflow slots.
gw2 not alt friendly..
I have 1 of each profession. 4 almost 5 of them 80. I basically just wanted to try out different play styles and I don’t like deleting characters. I mostly pvp with them. My ele main I do map and storyline stuff with and dungeons. Necro is for pvp and Tequatl. The others just when I feel like it or profession dailies.
mining………………………..
EDIT: I have 1 for each class, means 8 total.
Archeage = Farmville with PK
(edited by azizul.8469)
I try to use as many alts as possible so most have a define role.
Engi – world completion/WvW
Mes/Nec – sPvP
War/Ele – Dungeons
Guard – DTop & Baddassary (spent the most amount on looks for this 1)
Ranger/Teef – ignore mostly lol pvp dailies only
Currently:
Guardian – WvW
Thief – PvP
Ele – PvE
Although it changes whenever I feel like it. I have an 80 of each class.
