Q:
Okay, my real question, I guess, is can I just take the Level-80 Boost item out of my Shared Inventory Slot and throw it in the Bank until I want to use it?
Early on, I heard several horror stories of people applying it to the wrong character by accident (whether from double-clicking or simply taking it out of the slot while playing the wrong character. Tales were unclear).
I don’t really need the thing, and I don’t particularly like that it will hog a space in my already overcrowded Bank either. But it’s too “powerful” to just get rid of should I change my mind and decide I need a quick Level 80 character someday.
Is this a “tricky” item that I need to be careful with? Or were the other posters just not watching what they were doing close enough? As long as they’re forcing this danged Shared Inventory Slot on me, I want to try to find a use for it. But I can’t do that until I dispose of the Level-80 Boost.
You cannot remove it from your shared slot until you fully consume it, but you can trial it on any toon w/o committing to it. Even if you use it on an 80 toon, you will still get all the associated items – dyes, gear, teleports etc etc. But, no you cannot move the boost to the bank.
One of the only tricky bits is the full set of pvt gear you get is soulbound and cannot be forged or salvaged. Otherwise there are plenty of pop ups to explain it – if people click through them without reading, well that’s another issue.

You can not remove the L80 Boost from the Shared Inventory Slot without consuming it completely (using it permanently).
Any ‘horror’ stories seem to be only lack of reading/understanding what’s written on the tool-tip and/or ignoring the two warnings that this process is permanent.
Good luck.
1. No. It stays in that slot until you use it.
2. If people are consuming it on the wrong character, then they’re really not paying attention. You get a confirmation window as you initially accept the boost to 80. The item then takes you to Silverwastes so you can try out your character at level 80 with a set of exotic gear. If you want to keep the boost on that character, you can use the item again to consume it, and then you get two confirmation windows before fully consuming the item.

Anet posted a great video on the subject here.
It’s basically impossible to “accidentally” use it, so I don’t know what kind of horror stories you’re hearing. However, you can’t remove it from your shared inventory slot, so your options are to boost a character, use it on a level 80 and just take the items it gives, or hold onto it in the shared slot.
My theory was: better to get the use of the shared slot “today” and not worry about the most efficient use. I’m happy I did that.
However, if I had the chance to do it again, here’s how I’d manage it:
Still, the main thing I recommend is:
As other people have said you cannot remove it from the slot unless you use it, and you can’t accidentally use it on the wrong character simply by double clicking it. (You also can’t delete it.)
I’d be very surprised if you’ve heard multiple stories of people using it on the wrong character by accident. That would be impressive considering the amount of pop-ups and confirmation windows you have to go through before it’s used permanently.
Whilst I think it’s a nice thing to have I disagree that it’s too powerful to get rid of. Unless you’re brand new you’re likely to have a heap of Tomes of Knowledge and/or know of several ways to get more, so if you ever do find you need an instant level 80 there’s an alternative.
If I hadn’t just made a new character I didn’t especially want to level up I’d probably have used it on an existing level 80 because for me the best part was the free dyes (especially the Celebration Dye pack).
well im one of the rare cases then, i used it on my lv 80 thinking it gave me a popup on how to use it (havnt played in lime 2 years) and it immediatly teleported me to silverwastes, then i hit it again thinking i had to do it here and it asked if i really wanted to use it on this character and i said no, then i logged off and went to the character i did want to use it on, used it and it was only items and no lvl up. went back to the 80 character and it was gone. so yeah i can say it was rather annoying (that happened today and i put in a ticket hopping to reverse this)

I totally agree. I’m a mainoholic, I used my boost on my Mesmer alt I will probably never use but at least I have my shared slot. I put copper-fed salvage-o-matic in it so I don’t have to throw it around when I open bags on my lvl53.
I appreciate this thread. I still have my boost but am unsure of when to use it. I was talking with a friend today about the L90 boost you get with WoW – and how if you haven’t ‘grown up’ with the character, then you have no idea how to use it. I feel like I should level one up to 80 by myself and THEN use it on another once I’ve messed with varying playstyles, crafting, etc.
But in all honesty, I can’t see myself actually caring if I use it or not or misuse it or not. I love GW2, but it’s not my whole life lol
