Here is a list I’m making of words and phrases that have entered my everyday vocabulary since beginning to play GW2. Many of you no doubt have your own!

*Excelsior
*Pukilicious
*Slag iron!
*My legend grows!
*Skritt!
*It is good you have met me!

I’m particularly fond of that last one, gets the funniest looks from people at work.

On the flip side, the pronunciations of “Quay” and “Trebuchet”, along with “Centaur” and “Minotaur” are constant sources of amusement for my guild and I on Mumble.

Here’s a few hints ANet:
Quay is pronounced key.
Trebuchet, treh-buh-shay.
Centaur, sen-tor.
Minotaur, my-no-tor.

Your pronunciations:
Quay = Kway
Trebuchet = Treh-boo-chett
Centaur = Sen-tarr (YAAAARRRR!)
Minotaur = Minna-tarr (YAAAARRRR!)

Dear lord, it’s tragically hilarious.

I think you got overly obsessed with the pirate theme with those last two.

What part of the world do you and your guild hail from? The latter set of pronunciations represent what I’ve always heard to be said, with the exception of trebuchet, which I’ve known to be pronounced as “treh-boo-shay”. I’m from the U.S., btw, specifically the midwest. (Your pronunciation of minotaur is amusing to me!)

Tomato – toe-mah-to or toe-may-to?

Yeah there are a couple of spots where the voice actors were reading phonetically instead of knowing the correct pronunciation, but many instances are just normal differences based on region.

The mid-western pronunciations are the favored ones for media in the States. The news reporters on the BBC have posh accents which I enjoy, but I wouldn’t consider they way they pronounce certain words to be more correct than the way I pronounce them. As long as the meaning is clear, I don’t really have an issue.

Kway however, that’s pretty silly.

I would pronounce quay the same way just cause I’ve actually never heard someone say the word and I’ve only ever read it before. And I agree with Trebuchet being the way you said, however.

I’m from the Midwest and I do say Sen-tarr and Minna-tarr. Saying it the way you would prefer it pronounced just sounds wrong to me.

People tend to speak the way others around them do. That also explains why when people move to another location, they eventually will pick up a bit of the local accent.

With quay in particular, when it’s supposedly an English accent pronouncing the word, it should use the English pronunciation.
But this goes back to my complaint that rather than plumbing a whole nation of people for actors with English accents, they instead used poor American voice actors with bad Mockney accents.
