How about Crowd Funding to update GW1?
I’m not an expert on game engines, but my understanding is that the engine is basically the heart of the game. There’s no ability to jump because the engine doesn’t allow it and thus none of the maps have platforms that you could jump to. GW2’s engine is very different from GW’s engine. I don’t think such a move would be possible, even in theory.

No actually converting over the engine is like starting a new game. The thing is, it shouldn’t be as expensive since Anet already has the arts and models from GW2’s development.
What would need to be done if for the programmers to make a new set of codes for the GW1’s gameplay mechanics, and for the artist to design the GW1 zones over again in GW2 engine. Shoot crowd funding can make up for that cost.
That would remove players from GW2’s zones. Which is absolutely the last thing Arenanet want to do.
They’re happy to leave GW1 in the state it is because people can still go back for nostalgia sense. But they want the majority of their playerbase to be in the GW2 zones, playing the content they’re spending money on and buying things in the gem store. If you make GW1 active again then you pull away from GW2’s playerbase, income etc.
It’s not a question of cost, it’s a question of profit. They could have very easily left the small GW1: Beyond team actively making GW1 content. They chose not to do so because it would pull players away from GW2. Which is where they’re making their money and where they stand to make the most money from.
GW1 was amazing game but its time to move on man:-)
Tekkit’s Workshop
well actually you would need new models, as current ones won’t fit face/hairstyle/clothing wise + you would need to program the oldschool fighting system again… I would say it would take as much money as it cost them to make those games initially (minus scripting costs, plus more animating costs) and around the same amount of time.
The engine defines the basic interaction of entities in the game world and what properties they can have. For example character place on the world is defined on X and Y axes, but not on Z in Guild Wars. This means that character standing on a bridge would block characters walking underneath them. Since Guild Wars 2 has Z axis, transforming the engine would mean restructuring every object and map feature to define their height.
That’s what makes games the artform they are. Guild Wars is a unique game, and all its anomalities and quirks made the gameplay experience the way it was.

You got a couple million dollars in your back pocket to fund that? You basically just explained remaking the entire game all over again which involves thousands of man-hours to make happen. Art teams don’t come cheap and neither do competent programers.
Great idea, except that’s not how any of that works. No sweat though, you’re totally the first person to suggest this.
GW1 was amazing game but its time to move on man:-)
Yes. I gave that game a good 7 years of my life. Among the best games of all time in my opinion, but alas I have played it enough.
The only way to perfectly end GW1’s reign is to give us the option to install the game on our computers to play offline even after ArenaNet finally shuts down GW1’s servers, with the option of doing LAN parties to play with friends in real life. Not going to happen, I know, but I think that would be awesome.
This would never happen. First off, GW1 would need a dev team to continue to update the fixes and add content. This isn’t going to happen. I believe all they have is a support staff for GW1 now. Their focus and resources are on GW2. Second, GW1 is too old, and it would be a monumental task of trying to port it to the same engine that GW2 uses. It would literally take years.
About the only hope this game could have to servive after Anet closes it down is to release the code to the community to run this has happen in the past with some old single player games but not sure if it ever happen with an MMO it would be realy cool if this were to happen but I realy do think it could. Happen because of the all legal issues involved with programs these days. Also another way to make this game servive is to port it over to the mobile platform. Not sure if this is possible but wouldn’t it be cool to get your Guildwars fix on the go on your phone or tablet. Most mobile devices have more processor power then the first PC I played GuildWars1 on
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens
How about Crowd Funding to update GW1 and its expansions to GW2 engine?
How much would such a move cost?
Then maybe we can link GW1 game to GW2 without needing to log out as well. And GW1 would have smoother gameplay.
GW1 is in a purely “upkeep” mode. There’s no reason to change it, not when you’d need to rewrite almost everything just to “link” the two games more than they are now.

If they give us the server, we could run it in localhost and play the game in offline mode. That would be awesome, but I don’t think they will do that.

I make PvP & WvW videos
And I thought this was going to be a crowd funding idea for GW1, of which I’d happily give $60 for.

It would cost a lot because they would have to redesign everything to adapt GW1 content to GW2 engine. Also, it wouldn’t be GW1 anymore. GW1 was unique in the way it was… it’s a shame that GW2 isn’t the true GW1 successor. They completely changed the formula from an unique epic CORPG to a standard MMORPG…
The only way to revive GW1 is to create new expansions and provide new content, in the same way Blizzard does for WoW. That’s why WoW is still alive. ANet should have never abandoned GW1 in the first place…
May what they should do is make that game free to play and get their money off of the Guild Wars 1 shop. Being free to play would attract more people to an old game. I doubt they make much by selling the boxed games anymore.

That would be great. The game is already on steam. They could make it free (+microtransactions) with the premise that they would keep adding new content.

I doubt they would add new content as it would require either hiring more people or taking people away from gw2 work, so imo that’s a no go. However they might want to consider it because they would get some transfers over to gw2 as the new people finish their free game..
why is it so wrong to make GW1 active again…….no really, are you so focused on GW2 that you don’t see what GW1 still has to offer.
they can add expansions, new chapters, update the graphics (and you don’t need a whole new engine for that).
heck, if they add more and more stuff for GW1 they can make it possible to add allot of stuff in both GW1 and GW2.
for instance, add the whole northern part of kryta/maguuma jungle as an expansion and within lore add this in GW2.
that way, GW1 becomes more active, they can add stuff for both games and even have a profit from both games.
i miss alliance battles
- I miss having a team and a role. Even playing with AI henchmen made it feel like I was doing things as a group. Whether you wanted to aid your teammates, disable enemies in subtle ways, or just straight-forward bashing them down the game would cater to your needs.
I miss being able to design my own builds on a system that allowed wide range of customization on per-character basis. Capturing new elite skills felt like I was making my character more flexible.
I miss the exploration where the map completion depended on actually visiting a place. Not every place was conveniently waypointed, you could actually get lost in the wilderness. Exploring for 100% map completion felt like adventuring.
I miss guild battles. Morale boosts, death penalty, skill cooldowns and alternate strategies made every game exciting. There was even ranking tables that told how well your guild was performing.
If there was another game like Guild Wars, I would buy it on the spot!

most of the people that worked on gw1 have left anet , i also feel this new team does not care about gw1 players at all
- Crowdfunding: Developer publishes an outline (or blog, or whatever) saying, “Here’s the game idea we’d like to produce.” People fund it as a collective (or not).
- Publishing: Developer takes an outline to the publisher and says, “Here’s the game idea we’d like to produce.” Publisher funds it (or not).
- The developer has full creative control over the project, but looks to keep his funding source happy. The fans thus have some degree of control.
- The developer maybe has control over the project, but looks to keep the publisher happy.
Publishers are not going to cede any amount of control over intellectual property they own to a collective of fans. Not going to happen. Why?
- The goal of fans is to have a game that they want to play, that’s fun.
- The goal of the publisher is to make the most money with the least expense, thus providing only as much fun as they can get away with.

Just because you keep saying something untrue does not magically make it true.

There is nothing wrong with it but it’s an old game with dated graphics and an old engine (where you can’t even jump over an inch high ledge) that ANet has made its money off of and now they are concentrating their efforts (and budget) on this game. They might make a profit off of adding more content to Guild Wars 1 and they might not. It’s an older game and doesn’t have the “buzz factor” to draw in new people to pay for those new costs.
To make new content means either hiring new people, with their salaries and benefits, or pulling away people from their jobs in Guild Wars 2. Obviously doesn’t ANet feel the benefit cost ratio is good enough to do that.

One of the main reasons that alot of people are stuck in the spiral of complaints is their illusion that GW2 should have been GW1-version 2.
Like how the old Warcraft fans, complained for years how WoW ruined the franchise.

All of it?

The problem is that ANet team fooled themselves by believing that they were creating something really unique with GW2, which is obviously false. They removed the question mark on the top of quest givers and added some simple conveniences that are nearly irrelevant.
Because GW2 is a standard MMORPG, it’s comparable to WoW, which in my opinion is a more complete game than GW2, and it will take you a lot more to get bored.
ANet should have followed the CO-RPG epicness from GW1 when creating GW2.
There are aspects of GW1 and 2 that I like over the other if they would have left the whole game the way it was eliminate the instance based game play of GW1 and made it open World like GW2 they would have had a game that would of been awesome that was GW1s number one complaint the instance going into the world in groups.
put the correct term in but not everyone has kittens
If the CORPG genre wasn’t on life support this would be a less terrible idea (i mean on a scale of terrible ideas this is a 80/100). No publisher is going to cede control of their IP nor do I think they are enough “guild wars 1” fans to generate enough money to revive guild wars 1.
It is nice to have dreams, but you have to be realistic. Nice thoughts don’t make money.

The bold part is what we call an opinion, at least don’t try to present opinions as fact. Secondly, if ARenanet wanted to make another CO-RPG they would have, luckily they did not because the CORPG genre is effectively dead.
The point being Guild wars 2 being more like an MMORPG was actually intentional, especially since that is exactly what they said. Finally, an mmorpg with a monthly sub and about 6+ years headstart has more “content” technically, but unfortunately given the game’s structure and mechanics makes most of that new content worthless.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

Oh yeah man, let me just whip up some code real quick. We can just copy/paste all the art assets. This will be so fast and easy, I don’t know why they never thought of it!
Back to reality
No. To bring GW1 game mechanics up to GW2 standards, they might as well remake the game from scratch. My question is why don’t you just play GW1 if you want GW1? Are you looking for GW1 gameplay with GW2 graphics? They can’t just copy/paste models from GW1 into GW2 and magically they turn into higher poly, higher texture res models. Sorry it just doesn’t work that way. The engine isn’t a magical machine that adds polys and detail. Artists do that beforehand with lots of blood, sweat, and tears.
