A good while ago, ANET mentionned about the future acquisition of precursor weapons that it would not be an easy task. That they liked where the market was at the moment. Since then, prices have double, even tripled in some cases, going from 600 gold to 1600 gold.

I have made 2 legendary weapons since I started GW2 when it first came out. I am wondering whether this is available to new players now? Or even older players that are starting from scratch with this goal? Sure, it’s easier to make money now, but since prices jumped from 600 to 1600 gold, nothing much has changed in the economy. Dungeons still pretty much remain the best way to farm gold. I did it to get to 600 gold to buy Dawn off the TP. But to get to 1600 gold? That’s a heck of a lot of grinding. Even making about 2 gold per path if you get that lucky will require you to run 800 times.

So it’s either that or you rely on RNG, which I’ve mostly given up on. Now I know. Legendaries aren’t supposed to be easy to get. You have to work for it. And precursor aside, it is a lot of work. At this point in the game, calling “lazy” the people that don’t want to spend countless hours grinding dungeons to buy it off the TP seems downright silly. To me, that much grinding would just put off anyone from wanting to make a new legendary.

Now the target audience of my question obviously isn’t for those that play the tp and are crazy rich or for those that have gotten incredibly lucky. It’s for the average player invested enough in the game to aim for a legendary weapon, be it new player or old. Opinions?

Legendary weapons were really only accessible to the average player during the launch window when precursors were affordable off the tp. Materials were all dirt cheap because of bot farms and the tp itself constantly being broken as kitten.

After the initial hype of legendary requiring skill and mastery of all parts of the game boiled away as players figured out the recipes… We found out that legendaires were about ninety percent gold based with a little karma and badge grinding on the side.

Once the precursors reached about the 100 gold Mark the legendary weapon slowly crawled away from being obtainable to anyone who did not grind their face off or get kittenedly lucky with rng and that crawl has turned into a Sprint over the following months.

A new player on average will end up with about 30 / 50 gold if they do map competition and finish their ps at level 80. Seeing the price of a precursor and finding out that that is the only end game offered has got to kill off any drive to continue playing the game seriously. I wouldn’t dare attempt to craft a legendary these days, I’ve already got 1 and it put me off the game for a fe w months in that process… Making another I’d probably just uninstall and never come back

So it would be worse than getting obsidian armor if that is something that is even comparable?

personally i enjoyed getting obby armor.. even if i had to Grind FoW and UW for a month or two to do it.

the content around it was challenging and rewarding at the same time.. and I felt pretty bad kitten every time we actually made it to the end. (before hero’s were a thing)

I’m hard pressed to find that in Gw2 anymore.

How accessable they are depends on the method you choose to obtain them. If you are going to gather all the stuff you need to make them, then expect that to take a very long time 2+ years. At least for me I have been playing since launch and have about 90% of what I need to make one minus the precursor. But it’s that precursor that is the big hold up. They said over a year ago now they were going to introduce an alternate method of obtaining precursors (a lot speculated craftable) but to this day I am not aware of any new way or improvement old way to getting one. The other way to get one is simply to do things that get you coins really fast. For example speed dungeon runs. You could get at least 15g per day with that. Which would be at most 100 days to save to buy one. A lot faster than gathering the mats through whatever you want to do any given day game play that’s for sure. And not nearly as bad as it used to be either since the prices have not inflated at the same rate of coin inflation in the game. Before the luck system change and dungeon reward changes I would have said getting coin for one is not viable either as it took practically as long to get as the making it your self method.

It was actually in September of 2012 that they first said they were working on a precursor scavenger hunt. Which they later said they weren’t.

Then in July of 2013 we got the infamous “Second Half of 2013” blog post which said it was being worked on again, or at lest something similar. But later towards the end of the year they said it was being pushed back, again

And here we are and it’s almost 2015… so yeah..

At this point it’s safe to assume anet doesn’t really care if it’s possible for people to make legendary weapons or not. It’s safe to assume that they don’t care that making the pinnacle of weaponry in their game is the most un fun, un interesting, and tedious thing ever put into a video game.

It’s pretty disappointing. So buy those gems and enjoy rng boxes with a chance to get some black lion tickets.
