Just standing around in Lion’s Arch doing nothing causes significant stress to my CPU. During summer my room temperature is commonly 26.5 degrees Celsius (80 Fahrenreit for Americans). Ambient temperature and heat generated from CPU work causes the CPU fans to go nuts. This problem isn’t nearly as bad with other games or while watching videos. Guild Wars 2 just hogs CPU like crazy. I’m afraid this will shorten the life cycle of my computer and increase energy consumption.

Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? I’ve set graphics to lowest possible and capped framerate to 30. Is it possible to edit more variables than what the GUI options allow?

I would not worry about it. I live in a country whose summers rise up to 38C and I got mediocre fans, stock cooling fan on my processor (the one that came with it), stock cooling fan on my video card and stock cooling fan on my PSU – PC’s almost up everyday, no issues.

Anyways, either get better cooling system for your pc or try to download “GameBooster” – I used it on my old netbook to play some simple games. What it does is, it let’s you select some background process to disable, making more “memory” available for games.

Mine gets really hot. I’ve resorted to having a fan blow across it to keep it cooler. And it’s a computer I bought 10 months ago.

I’d buy a power metre before worrying about consumption – modern computers don’t take up that much power at all, heat or not. Most CPUs don’t go beyond 100W. (Find the review for your video card and they’ll usually show power consumption.)

Also computers are designed to failsafe before blowing up unless you have substandard parts (e.g. power supply that costs less than a cheap bottle of wine).

If you do experience slow downs or crashing, I’d first check that your cooler isn’t clogged with dust. I had a full day LAN party at a friend’s house at about those same ambient temperatures with no problems. Don’t try to fix “hardware” problems with software workarounds especially if you do anything important on that same computer (e.g. keeping documents or other stuff you don’t want to lose).

A CPU is designed to automatically shut off your PC if it reach critical temps. If you can play, its fine. As the others said, the simplest way is to just open up the case and put a table fan against it.

Of course, you could also get a better chassi or a better CPU fan/heatsink. I currently have a Corsair waterblock in my mini ATX chassi, no problem with cooling it during 35C+ days and hot as hell in the room (I can barely breathe, urgh). Before that I had a hugeass Corsair 800D chassi with an equally hugeass Mugen 2 heatsink that barely needed a fan to cool the CPU (single fixed-and-forget 1000rpm Typhoon fan ftw). And that’s not even the most kitten stuff you can get. There much larger heatsinks with place for 3 fans, lol.

Edit: Well what do you know, hugeass isnt censored but kitten is. That’s bad, pun intended but cant be seen I found a glitch in the matrix!
